Frsky only for me too. Quad flyer mostly, XM+ does everything I need. Long range quad may be fun, heck I regularly go out to several hundred meters anyway. Thanks for the nice work. Jeff
I don't plan on using a frsky reciever in my drone but this video was really helpful to just explain all of the features that are out there and what to look for. thanks!
Very good informative video, Mark! Thank you for going through the FrSky receivers for us. For me it explained the differences and the advancement of FrSky. Doing the update on the R-XSR is probably the way to go. It gives us everything we need through F-port now!
Great summary. Most of the current X series FrSky RX's also support F.Port protocol (which is control and telemetry over the smart port wire). This requires a re-flash of the firmware. But be warned, F.Port turns the SBus signal off. Use heatshrink or tape with the R-XSR. If it gets too hot, then the caps can detatch (de-solder) and take out telemetry or control. If held tight by heatshrink or tape, this should not occur.
My favorites right now are the R-XSR and the XSR-M. R-XSR is generally the best option. But sometimes on a newer frame with secondary stack mounting location like the Bot5 frame, the XSR-M is a neat choice.
Curtis Campbell I especially like the cable it XSR-M comes with. It makes it super easy to hookup in a model like the Diatone GT200 that has ports. Just plug it in. Mostly...
Both XM and XM plus can still transmit the RSSI value back Transmitter via Channel. Thus you will still get Transmitter yelling at u. It just cannot return other value like voltage and so on via telemetry.
The X4R he showed was the X4RSB. It only has 3 pwm outputs and sbus plus telemetry. It's my choice on quads because I use a camera tilt servo connected to the receiver. I use pcb antennas and have had them out 1.55 mile. The X4R in the white case has 4 pwm and no sbus.
You can actually use the small SBUS-Rx in a wing! You just need a SBUS-to-PWM-Converter. Round about 11$ on BG or HK. This is btw a very cheap option if You own a lot of wings: Get a good SBUS-Rx and a couple of converters. This way You can use the Rx (which might be quite expensive if you use a L9R) as a swappable part.
Really nice, dude. Great info! 😊 About the X8R, I've already seen people connecting it via SBus on the NAZA Lite. Without inverting. (That's what I'm going to do in my "TBS Discovery" build! 😀)
I use X8R, X4R and L9R and mostly for fixed wing. The L9R seems to get a lot of interference from WiFi or any other 2.4Ghz freq. but in a quite zone I’m getting 5KM and getting farther everyday! L9R Ftw :)
I've just got this drone as i was inspired from UAVfutures. I got so damn excited only to know that i actually needed a reciever which he never even talked about in his video and got let down. I have my parts now except the reciever and you've just helped me out. Bit pissed off that one who tries to inspire (New) drone operators to fly, not featuring EVERY single part when it comes to drones. I now have these parts: ESC: Racerstar StarF4S 30A goo.gl/pjBRir Motors: Samguk Series Shu 2306 2800KV goo.gl/1PNPK8 VTX: TX5258 5.8G goo.gl/McRMPF FPV camera: Foxeer HS1177 V2 goo.gl/oQJ6a7 I also Have a frame and a Taranis Qx7 remote for this as well as two S4 batteries that i believe will work with this quad i'm trying to build. Now i'm gonna try to get a reciever as well and i think i'll get the *FrSky R-XSR* but not entirely sure. Need to do some research on it as i don't really know which reciever works whith which parts. I have a rather basic knowledge of soldering and which cables goes where but the manual showed it rather clear. I might not have one of those white "plugs" to just pull out and in the cables, so i may have to solder them into the ESC. But i guess i can just solder for example 5v to 5v and SBUS_OUT to SBUS_IN. IF you read this and reply, you're my hero. You have earned yourself a new subscriber for sure! I do wish you the best and really hope i might get a reply from you. Greetings from Sweden! EDIT: Oooh, and i also have a set of googles too ^^ Forgot to mension that xoxo
R-XSR is a good pick. Yes on the wiring. I don’t think I probably have the best video for hooking up the telemetry. I would recommend Painless360 for the probably.
I have a R-xsr paired with the taranis QX7 on a drone I fly, I like it and it's small. If I buy a bnf drone included with XM+ receiver will that bind to the QX7 no problem?
Last line of video best line of video. Got one of these to put in my 3" micro, but now heard people have trouble with the telemetry noise messing with the vtx in tight micro builds?
I have the r.xsr in 2 of mine and xm plus In my wizard.great video buddy.but jeeeeezzz that last one I was expecting it to have stone round it were you fossled it out of a rock somewhere.must 9f been what cave men used to scout out the dinosaurs
R-XSR has been great for me, but I still have to figure out how to get S.Port setup with my F4 because I need to use the inverted pads on the back of the R-XSR (like you said)
DroneRacer101 - I have been trying to connect my FrSky V8R7-II to Pixhawk. For some reason I cannot get the Radio Calibration to work using Mission Planner. After reading the Rx instructions there isn't anything special that I see that would not allow it to connect to the Pixhawk. Any Ideas?
Does anyone know how it works with the voltage compatibility? I could buy the FrSky XM+ Mini 16CH SBUS Receiver (EU-LBT) With voltage use : 3.5 ~ 10V However, my drones use 2S and 4S battery's. Does that mean that the XM+ works with the 2S but not with the 4S? Since the 4S works with 14.8V... does this blow up the receiver? Or does non of this matter?
How did you get the XM+ receiver already pre soldered? I’m having issues with mine trying to figure out what wires to use and it would be easier if they came pre soldered
So I just updated to BF 4.1 now my OSD rssi won't go above 9 but when turning my quad in different direction it jumps to high 80's... As soon as I set it down level, back to 9... Any idea what the problem is or fix can be?
Whats a good resource to wire an X8R to a FC (Mamba F405 MK2 in my case)? I received an X8R last Christmas and want to use it on my first drone. Its a simple F500 frame

DroneRacer101 hey mark I think your link is broken(the first one at the top)
Xm+ does have Telemetry.
No I’m sorry. It does not. It does have the ability to send RSSI data to the FC so you can see it if that is what you mean.
DroneRacer101 yes will send rssi back, to taranis x9d, you need to update firmware.
Didn’t knew that there are so many Frsky receivers. That’s how noob I am! 😀 Learning something new in each video. Feels good to be a subscriber 👍
Frsky only for me too. Quad flyer mostly, XM+ does everything I need. Long range quad may be fun, heck I regularly go out to several hundred meters anyway. Thanks for the nice work. Jeff

Have you notice if the r-xsr gets hot?
The rxsr is slightly thicker than the xm+ which caused a problem on my first build. I totally found this useful though!
I use the xsr-m still and I’m still super happy with it:) great range, every time I chop an antenna, I just strip some more wire loose:)
Both XM and XM plus can still transmit the RSSI value back Transmitter via Channel. Thus you will still get Transmitter yelling at u. It just cannot return other value like voltage and so on via telemetry.

flyandride I was about to comment the same thing.
I like the x4rsb because it gets significantly better range than all other receivers

penguins can fly have you used them? I have heard of them but have not heard good thing about them.
DroneRacer101 Yes, got a couple of them. Work flawlessly with the XM+ and XSR-E (my actual favorite Rx: cheap, reliable, Telemetrie-capable).
Nice range of receivers and benefits/uses.
Fun fact , the x8r is 8 channel pwn and 8/16 channel sbus, you could also bind two of them to a Taranis for a total of 32 channels
First! great to get more in depth on the frsky receivers. I only have some xm+`s and r-xsr`s
Have you notice if the r-xsr gets hot?
Really nice, dude. Great info! 😊
About the X8R, I've already seen people connecting it via SBus on the NAZA Lite. Without inverting. (That's what I'm going to do in my "TBS Discovery" build! 😀)
Which of them has longest range....900mhz is not allowed in my country so plz do suggest me a 2.4ghz receiver with long range ???
what is the one with the longest range?
this answered all my questions wow thanks so much
R-XSR for anything with a serial connection (s.port)
D4Rii for fixed wings with PWM
Way to go awesome vid take care fly high and fast
I want to see how you wired up the x8r in your drone
Very helpful keep them coming
Whoa, I see you time traveled again to get the retro quad for this video!

Had a Zero uav that needed custom futaba redundant antenna that xrsb sbus is sweet.
There is an RSSI pad on both the XM and XM+
What's a good reciever for a FlySky remote?
Interesting video Mark 👍 maybe you could do something similar with flysky receivers 👍
This was a great post!! These are thing's that i think about when i am trying to sleep!!!
GREAT POST!
& GREAT CHANNEL!!

Please i need to know will any frsky receiver work with all frsky radios
Will the Radiomaster T16s work with the R-XSR receiver?
Hey drone racer can you recall a FRSKY receiver with a bind button on the side. It's about half the size as an xm+?
For me.. XM and XM+... cheap, small and weightless!
I don't think I need telemetry... do i?🤔
DroneRacer101 - I have been trying to connect my FrSky V8R7-II to Pixhawk. For some reason I cannot get the Radio Calibration to work using Mission Planner. After reading the Rx instructions there isn't anything special that I see that would not allow it to connect to the Pixhawk. Any Ideas?
nazgul5 and qx7 which one should i get? xm+ or r-xrs? and why?
Nice info. Thanks.
How is the Frsky V8FR-II, 2.4G, 8CH, HV Version...??
is the -M is already uninverted? if not what soldering point for that?
Does anyone know how it works with the voltage compatibility?
I could buy the FrSky XM+ Mini 16CH SBUS Receiver (EU-LBT) With voltage use : 3.5 ~ 10V
However, my drones use 2S and 4S battery's. Does that mean that the XM+ works with the 2S but not with the 4S? Since the 4S works with 14.8V... does this blow up the receiver? Or does non of this matter?
Please help me which is best for both fixed wing and quad. X8r or x4r. What if my number of servos are more?
Love it as always! Use x8r on my hex, x4r on my 5 in. What would you recommend for long range? Crossfire for radio I assume but what for vid?
Can anyone give me some approximations on each receiver's range? Thanks
How did you get the XM+ receiver already pre soldered? I’m having issues with mine trying to figure out what wires to use and it would be easier if they came pre soldered

I think we can all agree in terms of signal and reliability, Crossfire is the best, but damn, 250$ for just the TX and one RX isn't cheap.
Whats a good resource to wire an X8R to a FC (Mamba F405 MK2 in my case)? I received an X8R last Christmas and want to use it on my first drone. Its a simple F500 frame

XM+ will do the job in this case.
Do the tiny hawks come with telemetry evasive it tells me my task in my goggles
Which frsky would you use if you were to fly a Zohd Orbit?
Try R9M.
great video
Hey Mark.
What's the best pick for 5" to go with the new x-lite that I'm waiting for? Any word on modules for x-lite also?
i cant afford to ride the hype train of the latest and greatest lol but u really love the rsxr but only have it in one build the rest are xm and xm + but i just bought a hobbymate which looks like a clone of the rsxr and i just got the xsr but great vid
hi guys, can somebody tell me what these paper stickers are for with the black symbles??
Hey brother. Are there any frsky recievers that can output sbus and pwm at the same time ?
good review mark, my 2 rxsr receivers get failsafe warnings at 45 rssi at about 150 metres whereas my xm plus quads still on 75 rssi, seen few people wirh same problem, mine flashed with lua script, good receiver but indicated range no good, any idea ?
be interesting to see your build with it and your rssi readings as you fly round golf compared to your other ones with xm plus in
+!, i really needed this vid
Nice.
Hi sir is there anything we have to do to get smart port working on RXSR rx on HGLRC F428 FC?
oscarliang.com/uninverted-sbus-smart-port-frsky-receivers/
look at his "tutorial" there you have marked s.port at new and old version of the rxsr 👍
Why do people think its _such_ a pain to solder?
Hey mark im about to get a used Xsr e\m i want to know whats the max range of it?
That is always a really hard question. There are so many variables. I can say they my typical flying spot is 250 meters and I have no issues. Theoretically it should be good to a km or more. But I would use something else for that.
DroneRacer101 Thanks!!
At fly egg 138 you recommend XM+ or any other? I have Taranis Q X7.
Thank you. (Y)
Bobby Fillettcky i would recommend the r-xsr for that at this point. bit.ly/FrSkyRXSR-GB
