  • Bob Veverka came up with the design of his Mantis Shrimp in response to finding missing elements that weren't filled by standard bonefish patterns. The educated bonefish were picky and had seen quite a number of the standard flies.
The fly design uses separated legs so that they can each be moved independently rather than clumped in one section. the Rabbit carapace also gives the fly a lot of natural looking movement.
There have been some who have issues with the fly riding point down when tied with bead chain eyes. This seems to remedy itself when brass or lead eyes are used. that being said, it is a highly effective saltwater fly and one I consider essential to any angler's saltwater fly box.

Nice job! This is one of the cleaner mantis shrimp patterns that I’ve seen and I appreciate the time and effort it takes to post these videos- thanks.

Rich Plecker, thank you! I really like this one too. I get a lot of requests for variations on this pattern from clients and it really does well with bonefish. I've even seen a few octopuses grab it. Cheers!

Great video but the it would appear that the colours are off from the camera and or lighting sources. Can’t really see the natural colours. Thx for the technical side.
