Haven't seen you in a while been waiting for your decision on your mustang, he was a beautiful horse. I know you are the only one to bring him around. Hope you decided to keep him!
Have been appreciating your training sessions for some years now…so pleased to watch your professional/personal growth/development along the way…KUDOS!
Thank you so much, Sam, I have two islandic horses, and one of them is so close !! I'm in Switzerland, I speak french, sorry, but I'm learning English... ☺ 🐴🐴
It's all part of that so important first step, isn't it, Sam? Different trainers call it different things like join-up or connecting or whatever, but it is establishing and then building upon a mutual and earned trust. If you don't have it, whatever you do is on shakey ground. If you do have it, even set backs can retreat to that safe zone and you can start again.
I like to see this. In a similar vein, I used to have to check in with myself if I started to feel frustrated while running sled dogs. Also, used a simple criteria before cross country skiing with my kid: "Am I prepared to make this entirely about him (and not me)"? This kind of thinking built relationship.
I would love to see more about shut down or disconnected horses. My lease horse is a very independent individual and spends a lot of time off to the side of the herd. When new hay gets brought out to the pasture the whole herd comes galloping in to get some new hay ( they're in grass). Everyone except my lease horse. He could care less. It's hard to find things that motivate him.
We have a mare that is disconnected. She is an excellent work horse and is broke to ride as well but could not care less about things like petting or grooming and really is just all about doing whatever she is told so she can get back to the pasture and be left alone. Even when we bring her in with the herd daily for grain as soon as I go to take her halter off she is out. Our other horses all gladly linger for extra pats and scratches. She isn't afraid, just does not have any interest in such things. I don't need her to be my heart horse or anything, but it bums me out to think she doesn't enjoy people really at all. Is that considered a disconnected horse? If so I would love your insight and videos on how to improve that situation.
When you reward a horse like this do you expect the owner to follow up with this or is it dropped off and if so does that effect the horses relationship with the owner...

Really thought provoking, thanks Sam.
I love your training videos, and the attention on the horse. So true about paying attention to your own mood.

This was great Sam! I have an ADD horse also named Wildfire. Watching you work with him I feel would be very helpful.
