I’m 58 and my husband is 60 and we loved VV! The energy!!!! And…No kids!! The entertainment wasn’t always our preference, but always engaging. We hopefully have a lot of time to be mature, only a short amount of time to be younger. Good for your Mom to be accepting of new things 😃. In the end, we all like what we like.
Interesting...I took my mom on a Celebrity cruise and she was either silent or complaining. Her last cruise was thirty years ago on HAL and she kept comparing them (I don't know how you'd do that, but she did). The cruise was a thank you gift from myself to her and on my favorite cruise line so her attitude was eh, not great. She told me when we got home I should have saved my money. I still can't figure her out, but your video was insightful so thank you for that!
I treated my Mother to a 7-day 7-port Western Mediterranean cruise on her 69th B-Day I told my siblings that the Big 70 was on their agenda. They though I was crazy! The cruise was a disaster. She would book a land cruise only to cancel it.(too early) She would make a ham sandwich @ breakfast to eat for lunch (local food ☢☢☢) Would rather read her romance novel, on a bench, rather than be immersed in the culture While I was approched by two Cougars who though "I "was the one being catered to! 🚼

She's got a solid decade and then some on you. Going from Virgin Voyages to MSC is a culture shock! Those two lines could not be more apart! I like both but they are VERY different in experience and quality.
Brave lad - good on you for making the attempt! Of course, not everyone your mom's generation has the same taste. Choosing a line that fits one's sense of adventure would be the key, I think.
I’m happy to hear Mitchie was back. She is a great Hostess. I took my parents on VV for Thanksgiving and they loved the food, but they were definitely feeling too old for some things, especially the untitleddanceshowpartything.

Your mom would get along with my husband very well -- that VV Pool "day club" scene reminds me of our Las Vegas week where our timeshare was behind The Flamingo on the Strip and their main pool DJ "Day Club" scene was so loud, our building behind them vibrated all day until the DJ stopped at 6 pm. Oh, and we're picky eaters so we would do better in "traditional" dining venues so your Mom just confirmed that we are not "old seniors", but Virgin Voyages is just not our scene! You also didn't say if you took Mom to see the Drag Show -- that's the only thing on VV that interests us! 😀

He went on one with his father and his father’s friend. They weren’t really comfortable with the food because they are Cuban and expected Cuban cuisine but they really loved the people watching and vibes. I really thought they would not adapt or like it that well, but they really did. I’m looking forward to taking my mother in November with my boyfriend and for her to experience something that she has never but thank God she’s a lot more open. Thank you for the story and share
Thanks again, for a fair review of VV and especially the perspective of your Mom! My wife and I are mid-60, and are very frequent Sailors onboard VV. We actually love most of what's on offer. But there are 3 types of people that might not enjoy it. Two are irrelevant to this discussion, but the 3rd is very relevant. If you are a 'traditionalist', it might not be a deal-breaker, but you are likely not going to enjoy it as much as you might another cruise line. If your tastes in decor, food, entertainment, and music were 'finalized' in a decade prior to about the year 2000, you might have a harder time adjusting. There's nothing wrong at all with that, but people need to know that VV is new and different. We think in a good way, but realize everyone is different. Thanks again!
Great thoughts and 100% agree. Traditionalist I'd a very fair term for my mom! She can have a good time but if she gets to choose next time, she will choose a different line. Also, thanks for not mentioning the other two categories. On TH-cam, they would prob be a slippery slooe. 🤣
I'll be 55 in Sept and dont think the pool area and volume there would be for me either 😅 I love piano bars and intimate music venues. Not one for shows night after night. I'd enjoy finding a corner on the deck whilst sipping a nice glass of brandy and star gazing 😊

Not sure how old your mom is but I"m 65 and scheduled to take our 3rd VV - Scarlet Lady cruise in December. However, I have to agree with your mom about the Test Kitchen. Did it once - and that was enough. The other thing I would say about VV is that the pools/hot tubs are not handicap accessible.

Interesting video Brandon. I’m closer in age to your mom but would have to disagree with many of her observations. I love the Test Kitchen (speak up if you want a substitution for one or more of the courses) and most of the other restaurants, Razzle Dazzle is my least favorite, although you’re right that bacon is amazing! Really enjoy the beach club vibe at the pool, so much better than the belly flop contests etc. on RCCL. What I don’t like on Virgin are the shows where you have to stand like Untitled Dance Thing, and the uncomfortable seating throughout the ship but especially at The Dock and in the cabins. But great to hear your mom’s perspective and glad you both enjoyed the cruise!
Oh, I did a TON of substitutions in test kitchen! I HATE (HATE) cilantro and 3 of the dishes had cilantro pre-made in them. I decided not to do the dance thing for that exact reason, knew standing for that long of a period might be challenging and she definitly wouldn't know many of the dances lol
Next time, your mom and I will leave you at home. I enjoy more food varieties, but I suspect VV just putw stuff together to be different. You'll understand when you grow up. Looking forward to my next RC cruise!

This is honestly why I'm not taking my parents on VV. I don't think they would like all the modernization of things. My mom also really loves the broadway shows. I WAY prefer the VV entertainment, but I think my mom would prefer the classic entertainment.
My experience is the exact opposite of what you've heard, and I've sailed VV a lot. That said, it's not my favorite restaurant onboard because, frankly, you can get a steak anywhere on land. It's a pretty place, and the food is good, but there are better choices onboard. Do the different thing :)
My experience was I did enjoy the food at the Wake. But will def agree the tables are not quickly cleaned and you feel like you're sitting on top of each other.
I have never sailed VV, but the more video reviews I see, the less likely I am to sail with them. Virgin is more expensive than most other mainstream lines. And, I'm not going to pay those prices and eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches like you and your mom did for the better part of the week. I'll stick with Celebrity and Royal Caribbean.

The requirement to get dining reservations in advance via the app just wouldn't work. Also, that pool deck is so depressing. I get why the ship is battleship gray and red, it looks cool, but using that same color scheme by the one miserable pool. Yuck.

@@TheWeekendCruiser it’s probably for good reason because if they put a bar there people might spend the whole vacation in The Galley. They have the Tap That Hard machines across from the dessert bar that dispense beer and wine at the swipe of your seaband, I believe- I haven’t used it. I may have to try the Tap That Hard machine on the next cruise.
I would look to NCL, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Princess. Find a good travel agent to really learn your style of vacations and what you both are looking to do.
@@littlevoice_11 depends on the experience. NCL L vs Silversea are night and day. One is for the mass market and large audience and the other is a smaller luxury line. I would feel most comfortable on NCL and it will be a bit larger if a ship with more potential to like the people on the ship. If you are worried about demographic, Saga is a good choice! That's also a cruise line not well known here in the USA. I even had to Google it! Had heard of it but didn't know their experience.
I'm 68 and I agree with a good deal of your mom's opinions. I would have to say that the entertainment was probably the weakest part of of cruise, but that's not to imply that the cast didn't try hard. I do long cruises, which tend to attract an older crowd. While the average age on VV is mid-40s, on our cruise it was mid 50s. There were extra entertainers on board, and two in particular that I wanted to see. They were both disappointing; daughter said that the one was "all Gen X jokes which were really funny for that age range." All I heard was "I'm fat, straight, and can't get dates" or stories of dates. There was truly nothing funny about her. I didn't care for Ship Show either. A lot of the entertainment was just too sexualized for me--some of it was fun, but some of it was gross. I do like The Galley and there is a lot more than sushi and ramen. The chicken caesar salad is one of my favs as is the turkey and swiss panini. Did you/mom not know that she can get hot dogs at the Social Club? On our cruise, there were also daily specials at lunch and dinner in The Galley. I agree--I didn't like Test Kitchen although a couple of the items were really good. There is steak available in 4 of the 6 restaurants. While on a short cruise, you can only make one advance reservation at each, you can also do walk ins or stop by the restaurant and ask if they can make a reservation for you for the next day or for later that day. We also liked Razzle Dazzle a lot; typically the "Naughty menu" and "secret steak." I don't know if my preferences are age related or just "what I like." Flip side, there are many things that I like about VV, and I definitely prefer them to some of the other lines we've been on.
I relate a lot to your last line. Pros and cons but overall i like them! Very glad we have different choices and cruise lines for different experiences! For the hot dog, i did give her the option but when mom is hungry and already sitting in the Galley, we are not walking all the way to social club. It was a sea day and the galley was the easiest option. We also loved Razzle Dazzle. I think it is their biggest secret as it is some of the best food. Their entertainment does push the limits and is intentionally sexualized. I don't necessarily care for it either as you don't need that to be funny. Though, do feel like they are trying to tone some of it down, it has a ways to go!
haha, I got this question a lot! The main reason was she was by the pool and wanted to just pop into the Galley for food. We sat down and THEN she let me know she wanted a hot dog. I did offer the Social Club but I think mom was border line hangry and refused to go to another restaurant at that point. I tried!

I'm 66 and love sushi, have since my 20s. Of course, being deployed to Japan a lot helps.

@@TheWeekendCruiser it’s probably for good reason because if they put a bar there people might spend the whole vacation in The Galley. They have the Tap That Hard machines across from the dessert bar that dispense beer and wine at the swipe of your seaband, I believe- I haven’t used it. I may have to try the Tap That Hard machine on the next cruise.

I would look to NCL, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Princess. Find a good travel agent to really learn your style of vacations and what you both are looking to do.

@@littlevoice_11 depends on the experience. NCL L vs Silversea are night and day. One is for the mass market and large audience and the other is a smaller luxury line. I would feel most comfortable on NCL and it will be a bit larger if a ship with more potential to like the people on the ship. If you are worried about demographic, Saga is a good choice! That's also a cruise line not well known here in the USA. I even had to Google it! Had heard of it but didn't know their experience.
I'm 68 and I agree with a good deal of your mom's opinions. I would have to say that the entertainment was probably the weakest part of of cruise, but that's not to imply that the cast didn't try hard. I do long cruises, which tend to attract an older crowd. While the average age on VV is mid-40s, on our cruise it was mid 50s. There were extra entertainers on board, and two in particular that I wanted to see. They were both disappointing; daughter said that the one was "all Gen X jokes which were really funny for that age range." All I heard was "I'm fat, straight, and can't get dates" or stories of dates. There was truly nothing funny about her. I didn't care for Ship Show either. A lot of the entertainment was just too sexualized for me--some of it was fun, but some of it was gross. I do like The Galley and there is a lot more than sushi and ramen. The chicken caesar salad is one of my favs as is the turkey and swiss panini. Did you/mom not know that she can get hot dogs at the Social Club? On our cruise, there were also daily specials at lunch and dinner in The Galley. I agree--I didn't like Test Kitchen although a couple of the items were really good. There is steak available in 4 of the 6 restaurants. While on a short cruise, you can only make one advance reservation at each, you can also do walk ins or stop by the restaurant and ask if they can make a reservation for you for the next day or for later that day. We also liked Razzle Dazzle a lot; typically the "Naughty menu" and "secret steak." I don't know if my preferences are age related or just "what I like."
Flip side, there are many things that I like about VV, and I definitely prefer them to some of the other lines we've been on.
I relate a lot to your last line. Pros and cons but overall i like them! Very glad we have different choices and cruise lines for different experiences! For the hot dog, i did give her the option but when mom is hungry and already sitting in the Galley, we are not walking all the way to social club. It was a sea day and the galley was the easiest option. We also loved Razzle Dazzle. I think it is their biggest secret as it is some of the best food. Their entertainment does push the limits and is intentionally sexualized. I don't necessarily care for it either as you don't need that to be funny. Though, do feel like they are trying to tone some of it down, it has a ways to go!
Why didn’t you get her a hotdog and the social club which has many different versions. :-)
haha, I got this question a lot! The main reason was she was by the pool and wanted to just pop into the Galley for food. We sat down and THEN she let me know she wanted a hot dog. I did offer the Social Club but I think mom was border line hangry and refused to go to another restaurant at that point. I tried!
