3-Days Alone in the Forest Fly Fishing for Trout

  • I finally get to go on my 3 day solo backpacking and fly fishing adventure deep into the forest. I've wanted to put a backpack on and go fly fishing deep in the backcountry for so long but my plans were curtailed by bad weather. River levels have finally settled and the trout are out feeding on cicadas deep in this primal forest river and I had an amazing time catching them.

    WOW, amazing video and stunning fish. I can't believe how underrated your channel is. Some of the best shots I've seen in any fishing video. I'm planning on going to NZ in 3 years and It feels like it's super far away but still stoked to come down there. Looking forward to seeing more videos and tight lines!

      Congrats James, the next year or so is probably going to be tough but they are so much fun when they get bigger. I really enjoy taking my kids fishing now. My oldest (6yo) is just getting into fly fishing. He has landed a few good ones I have hooked for him, just need to get the casting sorted. You'll have lots of adventures to look forward to and I hope you enjoyed the video. Plenty of old ones to watch too while the little one is sleeping 😉. Tight lines and all the best with the little one.

    Well done Johan! You did a great job filming your adventure. I must compliment you on your casting with all that vegetation around. I think my fly would have spent more time in the trees/bushes than on the water. I hope you had some way of requesting help in case you got seriously injured. Did you have to worry about ticks or similar critters? You were right about that forest being simply magical! Thanks for all the trouble you went through recording your trip and for sharing it with us.

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much. I must say I did get into the trees a few times if you pay attention to the timelapse section but I didn't add much of that as the video was getting too long. I always carry a personal locator beacon in case of emergencies so I can reach help. Thankfully have not had any ticks in NZ. There should be some but very rare strangely. Biggest pain here are sandflies, a typ of biting midge or gnat. The bit hurts but it also itches a lot. That's why I wear long pants and sleeves. Hate the things. Thankfully little else to worry about here.

    Very good videos!!! At minute 22.06 you missed it for 2 reasons.
    1) Too much line on the water.
    2) When you hook a dry fly you have to put your rod up high, not on your side.
    I hope my advice helps you.

    A well spent 3 days. Beautiful scenery & jaw dropping fishing. Never knew NZ was this tropical. And you didn't seem to be wearing any waders. What was the approximate water temps? I'm sure you weren't freezing?

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's pretty warm in summer so I wet wade from mid December through to March, actuallt I wet waded in April in the SI once but that was a bit cool. Temps are mid to high 20s (Celsius) during the day but can drop a bit at night. Generally need to be prepared for 3 seasons during mid summer which makes packing tricky. Being in the water all day things get pretty cold later in the afternoon so a warm dry change for the evening is essential.
