Shimano SLX BFS Unboxing - Kistler Helium Rod

- Usually when I think of JDM reels, the word "expensive" comes to mind. Today I'm unboxing the Shimano SLX BFS reel. I paid about $150 for this reel - and honestly, there aren't a lot of reels between the $80 CDM reels and the $250+ JDM reels. But more and more options are showing up in that mid-range. It could become the sweet spot of price, performance, and quality.
I ordered the 6.3:1 gear ratio because I wanted a reel to throw paddletail swimbaits and crankbaits. The slower retrieve seems to work better with those most of the time for me, so getting a lower gear ratio would help me slow down even more.
I also decided to try out a Kistler Helium Rod. Their Medium Light rating seemed very similar to the Shimano Expride BFS I own and love, so I thought it was worth trying. Plus I'd love to support an American-owned, American made product.

I got the reel from Japan Lure Shop, but availability has been all over the map. Currently they are out of stock at JLS, so any place like Asian Portal Fishing, Digitaka, or oyur favorite JDM shop might have one available.

I have a Currado BFS XG and really like this reel for UL-L lures (ie: Ned, Neko, wacky, etc) But I love fishing swim baits and grew up with slow reels and have a hard time slowing down my retrieve. Just purchased a SLX HG for a dedicated swim bait reel. Thanks for posting!
No problem. Same - especially once the bite picks up, I tend to reel faster. :P

Great video! Glad to see you are trying Kistler. Their customer service is best in class (with Dobyns). I think the Helium Lite Medium Heavy is a truly unique power/action. Not BFS, but for lighter traditional lures it can’t be beat for the price. Crazy light and very sensitive. Keep it up, love the channel 🎣
In my outings so far with the Kistler, it's on another level. Like, makes me think "how could that $500 Megabass rod be any better than this" kind of level. It's sorta blowing my mind the combination of sensitivity, ability to cast light weights, and backbone to fight big fish. I've shared my thoughts with Trey Kistler himself. I'm looking forward to using more of their products.

I have that some reel for a year now. It’s the best some of the guys I fish with use it for bass/trout… put some blue various braided line .06 and 4p-8p leader and you will never want to buy a other BFS reel never again 😅

I am wanting to get into bfs and found your channel, great start! Could you do a comparison with the SLX DC XT, SLX BFS and other BFS reels with ultra light lures and line. Also a comparison of different mid to high priced BFS rods would be interesting. I am looking to buy a setup.
Hey, glad you're here! I do have that on my list to do. But that's a list of 138 video ideas (no exaggeration - i have a list!) not counting the 150 or so locations I'd like to fish! It is on my radar for summer to do the comparison vids for JDM-level reels. Like mid-price and up. For the budget reels, so many are clones it just comes down to preference and price. First will be all the reviews I haven't finished on them yet - which I'm filming this week and next!
The rods are a bit tougher because the ratings make such a huge difference in performance at different wieght ranges - so hard to do a true head-to-head across the board. But I'll see what i can do.
Ooh! And I do have a video coming in the next couple weeks that has been filmed - it was a challenge to catch a fish on all 12 set-ups I own in one day. And it was mostly light lures, so that might give you some insight even though it wasn't a true head-to-head spec-filled video.
I bought that reel from JLS last year. Its real nice.

No free shipping, but often their prices are lower than others even with the shipping included. And the free lure can be pretty awesome! No import fees either. Lol. I found it. I realized when I was editing I didn't remember ever seeing it again. It was still in the shipping box, which thankfully I hadn't thrown into the recycle bin! I guess those darn dogs just got me all out of sorts. Haven't tried it yet, but soon.
