I think is really sad, how desperate she must have been to sand her face, and endure so much pain just hoping to get rid of her acne. It breaks my heart to think how she felt about herself to go to that extreme.

Exactly what I was thinking. She must have really hated her skin to sand her face and harm herself.

      This! :•{
I can relate because I did similar (never sandpaper, but harsh physical exfoliants and isopropyl alcohol, baking soda, etc) and it was a form of self harm.
I knew it wouldn’t make my acne better and that it would hurt me, but I felt so disgusted by the sight of my face that even bleeding wounds and scars seemed like an improvement over the pimples. I was hopeless and frustrated. And truthfully, I felt like I deserved the pain for failing to look beautiful. Society’s message to women seemed to be, “your only worth is being pretty, once your youth and beauty are gone you’re disposable,” so that internalized misogyny created a horrible inner turmoil.
That’s why I’m so grateful for people like Hyram who educate the public on skincare AND self care. Everyone deserves to feel beautiful and achieve clear skin, it really can be life changing. (For that reason I’m super passionate about affordable skincare too, because it’s ridiculous to look at it as a luxury instead of a basic need and a part of personal hygiene!!) But everyone also deserves to know that their worth is so much deeper and so far beyond their physical appearance.
If anyone reading this has felt this way or feels this way, I see you, I empathize with you, I support you, I love you, and I wish you the best. ❤️

If you struggle with dermatilomania or skin picking PLEASE try getting acrylic/gel nails with nail extensions or press on nails!! Having thicker tipped nails makes it pretty much impossible to pick your skin. I used to pick my skin constantly, in the mirror, while was studying, unconiously, and even in my sleep. I used to pick the dry skin off the bottom of my feet until I couldn't walk. Now when I'm stressed I paint myself a fresh set of nails and it has helped immensely!!

    • @LydiaMorsman
      @LydiaMorsman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

THIS!!! This really works, I’m 40 and I’ve had dermatilomania since I was about 7. I could have written the above comment myself as I’ve also had periods where I could barely walk. Thick gel nails and great skincare (less to pick) has saved my life.

So I recommend not switching on your actual bathroom lights and just leaving the door open so the light from the adjacent room gives you just enough brightness to see what you're doing/ grabbing. As someone else with dermatillomania, it's so encouraging to see more people talk about it openly these days. I've been struggling with it since I was 13. Nailing down my skincare routine has definitely helped but there are some environmental factors that are just out of my control and I've come to terms with that. Hyram your videos have really changed my life. 🥺 I have struggled with acne since I was 11-12 years old and finally at 21, with your recommendations, has my skin started to break out less, it’s properly moisturized, and my acne scars are slowly fading. I tried so many of these horrible “diy skincare tricks” growing up and it only made things worse, so I’m very happy that young people have you to look up to!

I had really bad acne in high school and my parents were convinced that lemon would help, so I rubbed a lemon on my skin EVERYDAY for more than a year, sometimes even two times a day, i put it around my EYE AREA and i never even put on moisturiser bc I didn’t like the way it felt😭 I burned my entire face🙃 I did the same with apple cider vinegar. And since I was destroying my face everyday and it looked awful I refused to go to school without makeup.. I didn’t buy makeup removers bc I thought it was gonna break me out even more lmaooo so instead I scrubbed my face with sugar to get it off EVERY DAY. yes I do somehow still have skin left
a few years later my dad (who knows nothing about skincare) told me that if I put a mixture of lemon, cinnamon, nutmeg and honey on my face it would make my scars fade, and guess what? It didn’t :))) but you can imagine how much worse my skin got and how DRY I was

Tip for my fellow skin pickers: do your skincare almost completely in the dark. The light needs to be dim enough that you can't really see the details of your face in the mirror, but you can at least see the products you're using/what you're doing. Hyram's tip of not looking at yourself in the mirror is very helpful, but if you need to take it an extra step further try dimming the light and see how it goes.

I've been waiting for you to say something about Dermatillomania for so long, and I wondered if you even knew about it because it's not too common. Hearing you finally touch on the topic made me feel seen. I hear so many skincare TH-camrs go on and on about how bad it is to pick at your skin, but no one ever mentions that it may be due to a mental illness, and it makes me feel so guilty and ashamed. Thank you for saying something about it and shedding some light on the topic. Love you Hyram

Nothing was popping it, so I literally had to stick a NAIL into it. Yes a metal nail. I sanitized it (ya know, safety first) then slowly pushed it into the bump...it did work but I don't recommend doing it lol. Hope you enjoyed reading this :---)

I don't have a diagnosis but I think I might have dermatillomania too. I will pick at any blemish on my skin until I bleed and the entire area is red, and then they will scab and I will do it again. I also have the same issue with my nails, I bite them until my entire finger tip is red and my cuticles are bleeding. I feel no pain as a do these things and I almost feel relaxed as I do it but as soon as I "allow" myself to be done I feel so much pain and anxiety and I can't even touch or hold anything or wash my face without wanting to cry from the pain or feel the need to pick again.

    for anyone new here
    Cleansers
    A. Basic Cleansers
    1. Cerave Hydrating Cleanser
    - for dry skin
    - mild
    2. Cerave Foaming Cleanser
    - combination/oily/sometimes normal skin
= These can come in mini-sizes that are cheaper
= Simple and non-irritating that maintain your moisture barrier
    B. Treatment Cleansers
    1. Cerave Renewing SA Cleanser
    - simple and basic but with salicylic acid
    - Not as strong as The Inkey List
    2. The Inkey List Salicylic Acid Cleanser
    - Hyram’s personal fave SA cleanser
= has extra exfoliating ingredients for acne, dead skin cells, clogged pores
= provides a 2-in-1 experience (cleanser PLUS treatment) if in case you cannot opt for two separate products
    II. Treatment
    A. Exfoliant
    1. The Inkey List Glycolic Acid Toner
    - removes dead skin cells
    - very strong, use at most three times a week
    2. The Inkey List Beta Hydroxy Acid Serum
    - salicylic acid
    - less sensitizing
= use at night for best results
    3. The Ordinary 0.5% Retinol and Squalene
    - - strong
    - - squalene is a moisturizing oil that helps prevent dryness
= USE RETINOL 1 TIME PER WEEK AT NIGHT, MAXIMUM OF 3 TIMES A WEEK ONCE THE SKIN IS USED TO IT
= Hyram’s recommendation: Exfoliant on one night, Retinol on one night, and the other nights use moisturizer alone (per week)
    B. Niacinamide
= for hyperpigmentation and dark spots within the skin
    = reduces redness and sensitivity
= good for all skin types
= reduces oil and sebum production
    = great antioxidant
    1. Good Molecules Niacinamide Serum 10%
    - almost same ingredients and same price point as The Ordinary
    III. Moisturizers
    1. Cerave Moisturizing Cream
    2. Cerave Moisturizing Lotion
    = basic, simple, but good
= comes in mini-sizes (that aren’t actually “mini” since the normal sizes are HUGE)
    = has niacinamide and ceramides
= having a basic moisturizer is enough if you already have good treatments
    IV. Sunscreen
= not using a sunscreen whilst using other products nullifies the effect of the other products, in fact, it’ll make your skin worse
    1. Sun Bum Mineral Tinted Sunscreen SPF 30
    = easy to find
    = good for sensitive skin
= feels like a makeup primer
= may not work for all skin tones :(
= does not feel heavy and greasy
