One of the great musical statements of nationalism and freedom. Kubelik returns to his country, conducts a great orchestra, and we get to see it. Everything in this video is "once in a life time" and historic. Kubelik had been retired for a few years when he was invited to return to Prague for this concert at the Prague Spring Music Festival. He had left when the Russians took over the country in 1948. He was the conductor of the Chicago Symphony in 1950. He conducted around the world for many years. Arthritis in the back caused him so much pain that he retired. Here, we see a conductor, in great pain, fulfilling his destiny. Returning home, conducting his former orchestra, and performing Ma Vlast(My Homeland). It does not get better than this!

With our great president Václav Havel (who was welcomed firstime by the presidential fanfare) and his wife Olga on the balcony. With national anthems of two friends nations in freedom! To hear the most beautiful melodies which glorify the beauty and history of our country. played in the magnificent Smetana concert hall of Municipal house in Prague, which is a beautiful piece of Czech secession and decorated by the best Czech artists of the time - as Aleš, Mucha, Myslbek and many more.. Played by the Czech Philharmonic with Rafael Kubelík as a Dirigent (who emigrated because of communists in 1948 and returned back to his free country after 51 years).

Tak u toho jsem brečel už tehdy, na jaře 1990. Ano, svoboda a nekonečný prostor pro naše životy. Bude mi 71 a nelituju ničeho, co jsem od té doby prožil. Kdyby to tak mohl říct každý... , přál bych si.

Kubelik conducted this concert after the fall of comunism. He conducted this after more then 40 years of exile from his motherland. He conducted this on Prazske Jaro (spring festival) in which he was one of the founding members, he actually conducted at first concert on first Spring festival in 1946. And he played Vlatava by the Vlatava in his finally free motherland - Czechia. You can see his joy, his passion, even his smile while conducting it. All the puzzles are together here. In 1985, severe arthritis caused Kubelík to retire from full-time conducting. The fall of Communism in his homeland led him to again conduct the Czech Philharmonic at the festival he had founded, the Prague Spring Festival. During rehearsal he told the Czech Philharmonic, "It is my joy to hear this. I always wanted it to sound like this but never really found it with any other orchestra in the world!”

I have heard many Czech composers when I lived in Poland near Czech border, love the music, their orchestras and conductors.
Today is an anniversary of Maestro Kubelik's passing. RIP. Wonderful concert.

Only professor Kubelik was able to capture, conduct and lead orchestra to such perfection! Every time I see this I'm reminded how proud us Czechs and Slovakians ought to be !!!!

@@mcbigweener anyway, I am not quite sure how to answer. I don’t know how old you are or where you grew up, but I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with patriotism. I was not born genius, I am not famous, but the fact that such a small country can produce so many wonderful people and give us such heritage, I want to praise these people that give me good name! And I am extremely proud of them and their accomplishments, as they represent us - the Czech nation.
I also believe we need to motivate all those new generations instead of letting them down and teaching them hate and division. I believe in giving them good values and teaching them about being good morally sound and strong people through accomplishments of our ancestors.
So, the bottom line is - this is just pure patriotism and I will always be proud of being “dcera naroda Jana Zizky” (little movie humor there - Czechs will understand)

I remember watching this back when it was broadcast. It was awesome.
And one should never forget Mr Kubelik's unwavering principles. That he refused to perform in his homecountry as long as it was under soviet influence and that he came out of retirement when the iron curtain finally fell.
You can't go far wrong with one of the best composers of all time and one of the best conductors of all time. A masterpiece! One of the best concerts of the 20th century indeed!

This record is not just about the music. "Prague Spring music festival" is every year (beginning May 12 each year) Prague music festival focused on the classical music. In 1990 it was the first one after the "velvet revolution" (November 1989 - overthrowing of the communistic totality regime). First concert in free country, with new non-communistic president Václav Havel (in 1:22 traditional president's fanfare when the president is coming to the hall), with new democratic election planned within four weeks (8-9 June 1990). The conductor Rafael Kubelík had emigrated in 1948 and he was not allowed to return to the country until the velvet revolution. There was a great atmosphere of new start of democracy, liberty and freedom.

When I see all the flowers being put on stage and being presented to Kubelik, I think by myself there were just not enough flowers in the world to honor this man, not enough flowers for the Chechoslovaks to celebrate their just won freedom that they craved for so long !!

A very moving sight, Kubelik finally among his own colleagues, still playing for their lives, as always. He was right; at their greatest the Cz phil sounded like no other orchestra. Their colors & rythms are unique.

The great Václav Talich conducted the czechoslovak Anthem followed by Má vlast the night the Nazis took Prague. Kubelik did the Liberation Concert in 45 and this Return Concert 45 years later! Few concerts in history are so moving as this one. It totally transcends music, history and politics! Hail the great czechoslovak people and the great former president Václav Havel, rest in peace!

クーベリック氏が1947年にチェコを離れて当時の西ドイツに亡命して、二度と祖国に戻れないと思っていたと思います。
この演奏は1990年のものですが、この前年のビロード革命で就任した当時のハベル大統領直々の要請で病身を押して指揮したと聞いています。
当時の人々の異様な高揚感と喜びは相当なものだと思います。
当時私は高校生でしたが、映像を見て今までのプラハの春のオープニングコンサートの中で最高の演奏だと思います。
この演奏かどうかはわかりませんが、わが祖国の出だしで、クーベリックがまるで夢見るような表情で、ハープの調べにききほれている姿に、私も万感胸迫るものがありました。冷戦時代の終幕がなにをもたらしたか、なんて考えしまいます。良き時代って一瞬ですね。

I had 4 years yet to be born, totally understand them. Even if it wasn't a celebration of the defeat of communism, this music is so dear to me - I can't help but I burst in tears every single time I listen Má Vlast, when the Vyšehrad theme returns in the end of Vltava...

So sorry, Zdeněk, you're right of course - and you too, Zdeňka. Odd how one's brain works sometimes. I had been listening to Janáček. The word Libuše made me think of Libuše Domanínská, which in turn made me recall the Czech PO's famous Suprafon recording of the Glagolitic Mass under Ancerl. Somehow, when I compiled this listing, Janáček's name popped out! I've corrected my error, and I've tried to get all those diacritics right too :)

After the Communist coup of 1948, Kubelík left Czechoslovakia, vowing not to return until the country was liberated. "I had lived through one form of bestial tyranny, Nazism," he told an interviewer, "I was not going to live through another."
I thought I was a special event because it was the first Prague Spring after the velvet revolution, like you said. But also because of Kubelik's return . which I mentioned in another comment. If you don't know the world of classical music you might not know the story...big symbolic national event.

True. When Czechoslovakia was united, the national anthem was the Czech anthem (arguably the most beautiful of all national anthems followed by the stirring Slovak national anthem).
The anthem in the begining is not Czech, but Czechoslovak; my anthem!; it´s beautyfull.

What a celebration of music and human freedom... This is one the most stunning performances of Smetana's Má vlast ever.. All this played with true hart and with purest passion, pride and joy... Notice in this concert the harps are placed in front of Rafael Kubelik, rather than in the upper left section as we use to see at CFO nowadays. It gives them the importance they deserve for this piece.

+28101912 Svoboda? Zobuď sa! Tomuto fašistickému režimu hovoríš svoboda? Hneď po novembri 1989 v Čechách i na Slovensku nastalo obdobie bezprávia a vlády organizovaného zločinu. Celé to bol jeden veľký ojeb! Doteraz sa z toho nevieme spamätať. Tento režim musí ísť dole v krvi a tomu ver, že pôjde. Preto obnova ČSSR je nevyhnutným krokom na to, aby sme sa dostali z tejto mizérie a zúfalstva. Ja milujem Smetanovu "Má vlast", ale keď vidím, ako ich tam označkovali OF, čo je symbol znovunastolenia fašizmu a ako tam velebne tlieskali zapredancovi Havlovi, je mi z toho zle a do plaču. Hlavně se dnes ví, že Havel byl nastrčená a zneužitá figurka. Problém vidím v tom, že pokud máš dnes jiný názor než oficiální špičky a EU je to taky špatně. Žijeme opět v totalitě jen trochu jiné.Co ten náhubkový zákon, který se týká hlavně novinářů? Žijeme pod nadvládou EU, která nás nikdy nebrala a brát nebude jako rovnocenné. A EU vládne kdysi na hlavu poražená velmoc Německo čele s Merkel a opět si myslí, že budou diktovat a my budeme poslouchat. Republika je vytunelovaná. Pan Babiš si tu v klidu s pomocí podobných závistivců, jako KSČ v 1948 likviduje drobné podnikatele a živnostníky, administrativa přebujelá, skoro nic vlastního nevyrábíme, skoro nic kromě zasra.ý řepky nepěstujeme. A pro toho ňoumu, co tam plácá něco o fanfárách z Libuše od Janáčka.. Operu Libuše složil Bedřich Smetana v roce 1872 a byla uvedena prvně k otevření ND v roce 1881. Dále zní československá hymna a pak symfonická báseň Má vlast v pořadí Vyšehrad, Vltava, Šárka, Z českých luhů a hájů, Tábor a Blaník.
Boží Bojovník za ČSSR? To mi nějak nejde dohromady. Pokud se nepletu, nás jste taky vraždili (věřící).
Je zajímavé, že se zde jedná o hudbu, ale hlupák si musí vylévat své hloupé srdce.

I heard a story from our Czech visitors that on a home-coming plane loaded with returnees at Christmastide, the captain played a recording of the Des Irie ( that 3 note intro that permeates the whole work) over the intercom and the passengers including the cabin crew, were in tears.
This legend is so under appreciated.

On this day it was Czechoslovakia.
The compositions have a deeper meaning. For example the 3rd - Šárka from 32:44. Šárka is a girl´s name. Prince Přemysl sends his men, led by Ctirad, to break the resistance of women. The most beautiful of them, Sarka, whom Ctirad chased, is tied to a tree in the forest. Šárka (clarinet) arouses compassion in Ctirad (violoncello) with a false lament and his hate turns into love. Ctirad's men cheer with mead and dance and finally fall asleep. Sarka then gives her companions a signal with a horn, they come and kill all the men. It is a story of double betrayal and love. Did anyone notice that Kubelik conducts the Moldau faster than just about anyone else so that the peasant dance has some zip and that the waterfall can be even more intimidating?

Just curious -- is this an off-air recording? The emotional power of the musical epic of the Czech people may never be matched anywhere else or at any other time (well, maybe soon after the liberation of Czechoslovakia in 1945).

And Kubelik conducted that first post-liberation concert in May of 1945! On that occasion program was also Ma vlast, of course.

For me, this is one of the musical celebrations of the end of the Cold War in Europe (another one is Bernstein's Ode to Freedom concert in Berlin). The communist Československá became the Czech Republic and in this occasion, retired Kubelík came back to his homeland and conducted the opening concert of festival he founded in 1946 again.
Technically it became the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic.
I have never heard the "Fanfares from Libuše" before, though there is a clear pre-echo of Janáček.
