Not only the horns - with crooks notice - and the natural (valveless) trumpets (TWICE the length of the modern instrument) which required getting up into the highest harnonics in order to play melody: a skillful use of wind and lips alone which only a few modern trunpeters can manage... but note also the baroque oboes (only just evolving from their Rennaissance ancestor the HAUTBOY) yet note also the authentic eighteenth century kettledrums (hand tunable only and with no modern ratchet mechanism) and played authentically for the period with very hard-ended beaters. Conductor and musicians here have done Handel proud. This is EXACTLY how he wrote it and wanted it played! BRAVO!!
I was once a trumpeter in an orchestra and also a bugler in a marching band. The bugle was the hardest and most honest of instruments as it needed great skill to produce good music. I honour Le Concert Spirituel for the magnificence of their output.
Excellent comment. Period natural trumpets also have holes which helps the player to tune pitch as they go along. Requires great skill and a good ear. For modern trumpeters, a natural trumpet requires complete relearning. The instrument requires more air and reaching notes can be educated guess work which can leave the most competent, experienced and cocky humbled when it goes wrong. There are no valves and no where to hide and the instrument has limitations that Baroque composers like to push, demanding notes far higher in the range than in modern classical repertoire. The embouchure skill demanded is really, really difficult, but makes for a thrilling marshall sound. This performance is indeed the authentic sound which modern audiences may struggle with particularly as they have unrealistic impressions from poorly researched recordings of Handel and other Baroque composers from the 1960s and 1970s produced by labels like Decca which used modern instruments. These recordings are generally boring and inauthentic played by performers trained for classical era compositions, and onwards, designed for the modern concert hall
To those complaining about the brass instruments, bear in mind these are natural brass instruments, unlike the modern valved ones AND unlike most baroque brass instruments used in period ensembles, which use either holes (trumpets) or the hand (horn) to change the pitch. Playing these natural instruments is extremely hard. I, for one, salute this orchestra for their historical accuracy and their bravery.
@@josephanthony8585 This would have been the period where horns were first used as orchestral instruments, taken from their original use as 'hunting horns'. When they were hunting instruments, they would be played 1 handed so the player could also be on horseback. Without the addition of the extra hand to correct pitches inside the bell, the horn can only function on the harmonic series determined by the length of tubing given, which leaves many pitches out of tune with the equal-tempered system we use in virtually all western music. So when playing on the original instruments, it's actually near impossible to get perfection intonation, because you don't have the ability to correct pitching with your other hand! As far as difficulty goes, it's just a different style of playing to the modern instruments, as all the work has to be done with your embouchure; though the horn is widely regarded as one of the most difficult instruments to learn generally.
Seriously, this may be the first performance of Handel I've ever truly enjoyed, intonation be damned! I never enjoy playing Handel in a modern style-it comes off so staid and sterile. This has life and energy! Seriously incredible work by all involved.
Absolutely marvellous, never seen or heard so many old instruments together at one time. I love it and suspect it is closer to Handel's original score than today's modern instruments.

spectacular beginning and conductor´s outfit...i loved the authentic baroque sound including the roughness of the french horns and the way the musicians holded trumpets and horns...also the canonic solo of the timpani is amazing... wonderful!
Best Performance of the Royals fires 🔥 works ,2 thumbs up
I have seen comments on the tempi/tempo of this performance……..personally I think this is superior to any performance I have seen, just perfect.
excellent rendition!!....love it!!
Happy Birthday maestro, Thanks for everything!
Love the natural trumpets and horns playing rightfully slightly out of tune because they hadn't yet figured out how to temper them. So, temper tantrums and much fun! Bravo.
This masterpiece invigorates the human spirit
This performance these wonderful performers with incomparable skill and exquisite technique is beyond description , and full of admiration , tribute and emotion
The first few bars I thought: way too fast. I was wrong. Hervé Niquet made a wonderful interpretation of this music!!
I thought that was Count Dracula conducting.
@wkruit..Still...a bit overtempo for the type instruments used. Made musicians appear sloppy when they were working hard.
Absolutely wonderful!!!!
the conductor seems to be dancing. great, love it. listening to Handel is joy, fun, great passion
This is the greatest performance, isn't t it? Wish i could be there back in 2012 ...
Semplicemente eccezionale!!!!Eccezionale, una esecuzione superlativamente eccezionale!!!!
Think of the talent it took to be able to write this music. And how lucky we are to be able to hear it played on the original instruments, hearing it just as Handel would have. The drum solo is wonderful!
I love this conductor
Toujours fan d Herve Niquet c etait sublime j ose espérer qu on pourra le revoir à Versailles..
How one man and a feather created multiple pieces of perfection and glory. If there is a god he must be proud of his creation. Amen
Beautifully performed by all in the orchestra!
What a power and energy! Very nice!!
Yes, great composer and great conductor.
And a great orchestra!
Power ?? Modern instruments have a louder sound.
Glorious, majestic, sublime music!
And joyous!

Scored for 24 oboes, 12 bassoons and a contrabassoon, nine natural trumpets, nine natural horns, three pairs of kettledrums (wikipedia)
timbal nene¡¡¡¡
But why nine horns when there are 4 horn parts...
Maybe there are 3 Horns play for Part I, 2 Horns for Part II, 2 Horns for Part III and 2 Horns for Part IV? Whatever is the case.
@@Apfelstrudl They had no access to loudspeakers and amplifiers.
There are three horn parts, not four.
absolute BLISS for every human SENSE.. thank you
I think this suite is way ahead of its time because it reminds of the compositional style of the romantic composers (Berlioz, Holst, Sibeluis). The overture is extremely great. Handel was a visionary
If ever there was a true universal language, Handel found and mastered it. How wonderfully these gifted musicians and Conductor share their love for this very exciting and spiritual work with each of us. Thank you.
Indeed. Beethoven was a big fan of Handel.
@@thomassnider6691 I believe Mozart was a fan as well
What you wrote makes no sense at all xD how is this similar to Berlioz, Holst or Sibelius?
@@Quim1441 yes, how could it be?
Great stuff! Music with a proper rhythm to it.
If I remember correctly, this is how it would have sounded when first played, this is what Handel would have heard, they're the original type of instruments.

logicalempiricist I know that it's the "rule" regarding chamber music, but does it holds for music for larger orchestral ensembles?
