I like your play list. I would have chose about 90 percent of them if I was creating my own play list. I like the fact that you chose some from The Diving Board and made selections throughout Elton's career instead of just sticking to his early years. I think I would have been borderline line with Sad Songs Say So Much. Cool song about having your heart broken but making the best of it. Good List. :)
Wow, what a great list. I'm really impressed. You have my favorite most underrated/unknown Elton song of all time "I cry at night"!! I have absolutely loved this song since I was 11 years old and purchased the single "part-time love" and played the flipside (which is I cry at night) more then the A-side. And I always felt it was my personal song and secret that no one else could have. Plus Elton was incredibly unpopular in the US in the late 70"s, so this was all mine !! So it amazingly touching for a young person such as yourself to not only discover this music but to understand it's full power as more then just a silly pop song !! You also had Elton's Song on your list which is another pop masterpiece that no one knows, not even most so called Elton fans. All the songs on your list are for the most part unknown pop gems that in my opinion are just as good, if not better, then his 40 or so hits. Keep up the good work and keep on keeping on inspiring all us Elton geeks...lots of love.

His voice was the greatest it's ever been in 1977-1984, really! I listen to "I Cry At Night" when I'm going to bed, it's very soothing, but it also makes me cry, at night... haha! Hey retro reginald sweetie - Thanks for responding !! It's Saturday night (it's alright ) 10/6/2018 and only 9 more days till I see my boy in concert in Grand Rapids MI !!!! I'm so fucking excited !! this will be the 24 or 25 Elton show I have seen since 1980 ( at the tender age of 15 ). I've had a crush on him since I was around 9 or 10 and herd Island Girl for the first time !! He and Bernie have been central figures in my life since I saved my pennies and bought for myself Blue Moves in 1976. This was my first "new" Elton album ( I had greatest hits and some singles) and it changed my life. This is a pretty heavy album for a 10 year old but I had never herd anything like it. It's still close to my favorite album (next to captain fantastic) From there on every album conjures up parts of my life. Too Low For Zero came out when I graduated from high school. The One came out when I purchased my home etc... Most people could never understand this. It's not a infatuation, It's almost a way of life. Through Elton and his music I learned about classical music (which takes up a good chunk of my life) and also new pop music which he promotes constantly. Anyway, I'm starting to get way too sentimental . So once again I will say "how wonderful life is while your in the world" Keep up the good work and I hope you see him on his final tour !!

A lot of people hate I Fall Apart because it sounds cheesy to them, and I think some others surpass it. This is a top 25 list, not a list of every sad Elton John song.

Funeral for a friend is a very sad song, but it is so counter-balanced by the uplifting sounds you forget the sad parts. I like to think that's the idea! That life after death can be something to celebrate, as can a life well-lived. Love you for that Elton.

I have a verse of High Flying Bird on a homemade plaque as a dedication to a girl I dated briefly who suddenly passed away a few years later of a brain aneurysm. I can't think of a song by anyone else who nailed my feelings towards her better than HFB. Hard to listen to for me
You somehow overlooked Tonight :-) I would've had Someone's Final lower. Its a little too whiny to me more so than sad. The Last Song will always be the saddest song he ever recorded hands down IMHO I also get somber listening to Reverie leading into Song For Guy... Which by the way also should be on here somewhere :-)
The NORTH is so UNDER RATED. A complete NON HIT and is one of the most beautiful songs Bernie and Elton ever did. I have to asay the saddest EJ song has to be between "Talking Old Solider's" and "Goodbye"..

I reccomend you listen to the album "Made In England" if you don't know where to start. It came out in 1995, but it was truly his real prime musically, emotionally, physically and spiritually if you ask me. Not a finer album by any artist could be made.

The One is a love song! That ain't sad! Nikita IS sad but I don't think it makes the top 25... not every sad song can make a sad song list! And Someone Saved My Life Tonight, well, it could be sad but it could also be perceived as a "comeback" song, basically, the lyrics are telling how he survived a bad relationship, not being in one.
While I agree with many of the choices, there are some songs which doesn't quite sad, and doesn't sound sad, like Too Low For Zero is more of an anger song of a man hates his work he's currently in, and Rocket Man, Written in the Stars.
