I was HOOKED on cocaine for ten years and every time I hear this song .. I get overwhelmed with emotions... I first heard this song when I was a kid..my mother played all Elton's songs as I growing up... .. when I was in my 20s and falling fast to my rock bottom this magical song was playing on the radio in my car.. I listened to it word for words and it was like an epiphany came over me... this song touched my soul and mended my heart right then.. Elton saved my life that night.... too bad he'll never know... but I thank God and Elton John til this day.... 11 years sober now and lead a beautiful life with my children and family.. 🎶💜

Made me smile. I am SURE it is seen as a huge distraction and disrespectful by the vast majority of performers, and it is. Also, if someone is known for being tolerant of it, it may lead to more people trying it later, which could cause more issues. In this instance, I would like to think that it was combination of Elton’s drugged up state, and/or him being in a genuine good mood and he just said fuck it...I want her up here if she wants to be here.

I’m 61 years old now, and I definitely grew up in a different time than now! Seeing Elton John welcome this beautiful young lady to sit at the piano with him is something that unfortunately could probably not happen today. It kind of reminds me of watching Hank Aaron hit his 715th HR and those two young guys running around the bases with him! Remarkable visual I’ll never forget, but it sadly can’t be like that ever again! Glad I grew up in the 70’s!! 🎸🎸

It was amazing seeing the young woman get close enough access to Elton to plant a kiss on his cheek, start to run back to her seat, only to have him pull her back to sit next to him as he finished the song. Then to realize less than three months later Elton's good friend John Lennon would be assassinated right down the street from this concert. I'm in my late 60's now but remember people like John Gacy, Ted Bundy, the Son of Sam, etc dominating the headlines. Wars happened, innocent people were killed back then much like all the crazy shit that dominates today's news. When I reminisce of those long ago days to my kids and grandkids I try to focus on the positive, but I never say my generation was any better or worse than those before or after. It's not true from what I remember. It's all in each person's perception, I suppose. Regardless, what an amazing performance by Elton John, I'm glad we are able to "witness" these great old concerts on TH-cam. Couldn't do that back in my day 😉

Some events in your life you'll never forget. This concert was that event for me. I was 19, you could buy booze at 18 back then. He took the stage about 4pm. Scott Muni (WNEW dj) introduced him. Yes, there is a debate as to the crowd size, but there was no debate that the crowd loved Elton that day. The music was awesome, the weed flowed freely, and virtually everyone had an alcohol drink. At end of the show, Elton pitched for everyone to clean up, pick up their trash. And that they did. I never saw so many mountains of liquor and beer bottles piled so well. The cops back then in CP concerts weren't dicks, like they are today. On the way back to Jersey City, on a super-packed subway I struck it up with a hot chick and got laid in her car on a hot, muggy night in a Hoboken factory parking lot.

YES! I completely agree! Incidentally, I was there! And no matter how awesome this video is, nothing compares to the feeling of being there and listening to hundreds of thousands of people sing along with him. I will say that it does sound much better on the video. Being down there was a madhouse and we nearly didn't go, but at the last minute we just said "screw it" and we all hopped on the subway and went down. It was so hard navigating the crowds to get closer to the stage but it was part of the experience! This is my favorite, not only Elton John song, but song of all time! This is a very important song; at least for me, at least for my life.

Elton John is on top of his game here, singing outdoors in Central Park, NY and the world was a much simpler, safer place. That woman toward the end of the song could just scramble up to smooch the star without security catching her way before she gets to him. But Elton reaches back and pulls her onto his piano bench. She's on top of the world and he's enjoying the moment, also.
Truly, we will not have a moment like this again.

@@Qwerty-sl3ns Interesting problem, how to be safe; lots of poor quality information out there. Crime in the USA generally increased through the 60s and on into the 80's, as guns were outlawed and only the outlaws had guns, but the big increase in random mass murders had hardly got started in 1980. The big increase in that came after 2000, and especially after 2016; we need to focus on what happened, what changed - and don’t forget, we had plenty of guns in the 1950's and no mass murders. We have better treatment for mental health but we need to work on making it available to more people; and the reason for doing that is not so much the very few mentally ill people who commit murder, but to help the millions of people who suffer alone.

I highly doubt it. This concert was in September 1980 and John Lennon spent most of the Summer of 1980 in Bermuda writing for Double Fantasy. He had sailed to the UK in June, so then to Bermuda, and I believe it was in November 1980 when he got back to NYC.

From Wikipedia’s article on Double Fantasy:
“Sessions for the album began at The Hit Factory in New York City on 7 August 1980 and continued through 19 October 1980. They produced dozens of songs, enough to fill Double Fantasy and a large part of a projected second album, Milk and Honey.”
Clearly, Lennon and Yoko Ono were in New York City in September of 1980. They didn’t arrive back in November.

@@theaterdreamer In the middle of 1980, Lennon embarked on a sailing trip from Newport, Rhode Island, to Bermuda. During the journey, his yacht encountered a prolonged severe storm. Most of the crew succumbed to fatigue and seasickness except Lennon, who was eventually forced to take the yacht's wheel alone for many hours. It had the effect of both renewing his confidence and making him contemplate the fragility of life. As a result, he began to write new songs and reworked earlier demos. He commented later, "I was so centered after the experience at sea that I was tuned in to the cosmos - and all these songs came!"[4] Ono also wrote many songs, inspired with new confidence after Lennon had stated that he believed that contemporary popular music, such as "Rock Lobster" by the B-52's, bore similarities to Ono's earlier work. Seems to me that he was in fact in Bermuda for some of that since he sailed there and back.

I have literally every song he ever recorded (I think!) and I never tire of his talent and his voice. He is one in a million and I've been able to follow him earnestly, since he's a mere five (5) years younger than me - hard to believe we've both aged this quickly - Life is short indeed) My favorite song of all: "Your Song" - that's "pure early Elton John. "You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue"! How many times I've listened to it? Numbers don't go that high! This song brings back so many many memories of Good & Bad Memories; all of them treasured by me!

I take a breath, and.... I'm SIXTY!!! WHAT??? Yes, I turned "60 Years On", this past summer. Unfathomable. So... I know 70 is going to be here tomorrow, then poof... I'm at 80 just after that, right there with you. My my, the considerations I've had over the past several years of what life REALLY is. It's quite remarkable. A few little decades, and poof... we're out of here. I've had more friends and family leave this life the past few years than I ever have. I suppose that makes sense, the closer we ourselves come to the edge. All before us have pushed on ahead. Our own personal time is coming. I could literally write a book about my considerations (its ALL a part of the condideration... ALL of life... and even Elton has a part of that consideration in my own life, his influence on me... see my own channel here. I'm VERY Elton influenced in the musical part of my life). I've come to some deep considerations, and it's an amazing interconnected web of everything from what we label "religion", to science, to philosophy, and even including "Near Death Experiences", fractal mathematics (fascinating implications toward our "reality"), and people such as Emanuel Swedenborg and others. I can't "prove" anything. But I have VERY strong indication and reason to believe "this life" is simply the intro, to what's truly to come, after that final breath. We take EVERY instant of it all with us... including every note we've ever heard of an Elton song 😊 I'm flabbergasted, and moreso every day along the journey! Blessings to you friend. From this mere total stranger's heart, to your own! 💞
(P.S. John 3:14-19, indeed! Spoken by an absolute angel! I saw that after I typed out this response to you ❤)

At 55, this song still has the capacity to cut me down. I actually was there, in Central Park in 1980. We decided to head down at the last minute and I am glad we did. Then one day ,one of his friends called John Baldry(Sugar Bear) who was also a musician convinced him to break up with the lady is good for him and also good for his musical career. I see him pulling the fan back as returning some love to his audience and not being so uptight and untouchable as stars have to be sometimes

No comments that he’s a genius. Bernie gives him the words and he creates a different melody for every song, that’s genius.

These 80's songs are so clear, every word is heard, lately his voice has become coarse. I like this song.

Actually this song is from 1975 and it´s part of the album "Captain Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy" along with other great songs like "Tower of Babel", "Tell me when the whistle blows"...that album is a real masterpiece...

This was the last era of the high notes in falsetto Elton John had created during his early years still always sounding good we love this so much and appreciate the fact that whoever videotaped these forever will be cherished this is incredible you are to watch the whole concert it's amazing.
