14 years later and this video is still so amazing. That whistle is so beautiful. Especially when it echoes through the Pennsylvania mountains. I wish they would paint it back into that bright blue paint. What a beautiful locomotive and video.
Beautiful engine, and to my ears, the best sounding whistle I can recall hearing. The Reading, Pennsylvania, and Lehigh Valley Railroads all ran lines through the towns, farmlands, and woods around where I grew up just north of Reading, where the Reading and Northern runs today. I was lucky enough to get to see steam trains on regular runs almost daily as a boy, and I miss them. I was pleasantly surprised by this engine one day a few years ago, when it was running on a track next to a highway I was traveling in northern Berks county. Like the videographer in this video, I paced her while she was on a straightaway there, and loved every minute of it.
Superb video! Thank you so much for sharing it. I just love steam locomotives. I even get the smells around the trains in my nose as if I was standing nearby. What memories of youth they bring!!! Take care and if you continue to upload steam locomotives or related to them, please be sure to send me. Keep up your excellent work. I see you are a real train fan. So am I. Have always been fascinated by them. Take care!
This right here is the first footage and the first time I’ve ever seen or heard this locomotive. This video led to my love of this engine, as it is currently my all time favorite. Penn, I’m happy to say you’ve brung this joy to me.
Bless your heart. I know how you feel. I grew up watching steam locomotives in action with my late father. They were all gone by the time I was ten. Now, my father is gone as well.
It’s 2019/2020 and I’m turning 18 soon and every time I watch this it brings back so many memories from being a little boy. I would always show this video to my parents.
Thank you so so much for this wonderful video. Those beautiful, wailing, soulful whistles bring back an incredibly wonderful era in my life as a little guy living in Annandale, Virginia in the 40s and in North Carolina in the 50s. Back then, I never dreamed we'd lose the beauties into history. Thanks, again, for capturing these beautiful sights and sounds for the rest of us. Semper Fi, y'all Ole Johnny B.
I can only say one word: Magnificent !! ! ! ! !!! ! !*********** ! !!! ******** !! Great goin' all ya !! Boy this is some serious example of RR beauty !! Great camera and sound quality, too !! Just Magnificent !!.... Much thanks, Mark
I like the 6 chime whistle it's my favorite whistle And i like to have my train in my life i speak spanish a little but im in Argentina. But my life has oil trains but in my life Steam trains dont work because idk what they have done with my trains.
Last time I saw this engine in person ISTR that she was all no-nonsense flat black except for number and lettering. I like this new livery. It is very classy. Great video. Thanks.
this takes me back to my childhood. riding on the New Hope Express (i think cant quite remember the name) such beautiful machines these are, its a real shame the railroads switched to deasle
It's the automatic drain valve on the diesel in the background. This valve is mounted under the first main air reservoir tank (there are two in series). Once the air is compressed, the moisture precipitates out of it. This valve senses the collected water and "spits" it out.
This is truly a handsome machine !! My only regrets is I wish I was alive when these machines were brand new !!! Love the past & hate today's ugly ass world !!! Ps. My father & grandfather were workers on the P.R.R. , from steam to desil , 1910 to 1994 !! Grandpa born 1892 !!
they really were putting that engine through its paces, even after all the years its had, its kinda rare to see a video of a steam loco actually moving at a decent speed
can you believe 425 used to be that light blue. Not saying I hate it but she's probably was the bluest steam locomotive I knew til she was repainted to her current blue which I prefer more. Sorry if I pissed off anyone who likes the other blue paint scheme.
Wonderfull!!. I also think the colour makes a nice change from black. I really should come over to the US. and see all the working steam locomotives that have been restored to working order. Unfortunately, you are a long way from Australia!.
Although I have aged many years since my elementary school days, watching this video regularly hasn't stopped.

I like the whistle from 425 best, but that's just my opinion.
Damn, how could anyone dislike this beautiful piece of history?!

I usually don’t like super high pitched whistles, but the reading 6 chime is one exception.
Love it!!! Superb production!!!
wow, alot of hours into the paint and detail. looks like a Comet. need to paint the cars the same color! what a beautiful site. Love it
Never tire of the Six Chime!

A diesel train making electric sounds
@@theaviator5637 well I've never hears a diesel make a popping noise
Is because there is something inside the diesel cab was the "spitter valve" that makes this tck tck tck sound
