Good to recognise and adapt to the conditions on the day, condolences to the family of the runner who didn't get home! Have Cork marathon in about 11 days and can be hot on the day. I think Stryd takes the heat into account in the power reading? Using Stryd myself Heat in Lisbon in March impacted my race too.
Pop up and do the Chester half marathon, it was on the same day as Bristol, it might be a bit of a trek for you but it was a fantastic event , very well organised, great city centre finish with great crowd support, really nice medal, finishers t-shirt and goodie bag , highly recommend 👍🏻
Ah I was there Sunday too didn't see u ,yea was bloody hot still managed to get a PB somehow tho which I'm chuffed about really well organised think it was 11000 people there this year
You indeed did the right thing in your race. I raced a marathon in Longueuil, Qc, Canada...average temperature around 22, started at 16, ended at 25 C... It was hot, and almost no shade. But I slowed down and still had some fun! It was harder than expected though...
I can only admire what you did.. finishing in 25C heat. The situation and heat risk in Bristol probably was manageable if participants made the right decisions. Running in hot conditions (for England) is difficult, but there's definitely an element of inexperience and failing to prepare. Makes running a Half feel hell of a lot worse.
Hi Ed, I ran the 10k VI start at 09.28, in Adidas Adizero Takumi Sen 10,(love that shoe). My guide (Emma) and I actually led the field for the first 1k, then the elites tore us up, wow so fast. We were finished by 10:15 and looked out for you walking back but too many runners, I was also glad I wasn't running the half as by then it was pretty warm. Well done.
Love those 1/2 tights - got a couple of pairs in rotation. No shame in not shooting for a pb. Had a similar experience in a 10k a couple of weeks ago - also done in the MS Paris :) You live to fight another day!
Kudos for having the wisdom to slow down. I ran the half as well and (being 17 and bit inexperienced) thought the heat wouldn't get to me too much. It did. Was on pace for the sub 1:25 I trained for at half way but stomach and heat combined meant I bonked hard at 12k, and was a struggle to the finish. 1:29 in the end which i was disapointed with, but i guess in the heat it was never going to be my target time that I set in April when it was 10 degrees.
It certainly was a scorcher and I agree, definitely not enough drink stations considering the weather prediction and late start. Nice meeting you after the race for a quick chat 👍🏻
Well done Edd. It's a special skill knowing when to rein it in! How do you get on with the Half tights? I couldn't find any building up to the London and ended up wearing Nikes lava loop ones, with all the pockets and I absolutely loved them!
Well done Ed! That is a late start time....not much you can do when the weather is a factor other than slow down and run smart! I'll have to ad a 1/2 marathon into my schedule sometime. Haven't done one in years but that's a fun distance. Sad to hear that a runner did not make it :( On another note - been listening to the new Pearl Jam record a lot lately and the song "Running" would be great for musical interlude! Just 2 minute power track that would really inspire one to pick up the pace :)
I actually got my run done earlier Sunday so I was able to track your progress on the App. I didn't realise that the half was a 10:30 start? but saw you'd crossed the start line around 10:40. You'd only been going 8 minutes by the time I'd finished my run. 1:37 is a great effort in those conditions taking it in your stride too. I'm certain on a good day you go sub 1:30. Like you said such a big half marathon in May should be starting earlier, doubling it up with the 10k on the same day probably doesn't help. Extremely sad to hear one runner didn't make it home, 26 years old, that is no age 😔
Top work Edd, and good decision-making. We all need to remember that so we come back to run another day. Saw you at the start but didn’t wanna interrupt filming! 😂 I didn’t suffer too badly in the heat and managed to bag a PB but agree, the facilities were overwhelmed a bit and without a solid hydration plan it’s a risk to runners not having another station or two.
Ed, please do make those suggestions on holding the race separately again in Sep or running event earlier in year, on lack of drink stations and lack of water generally/poor quality small water bottles. The more people say something to Great Run the more likely they are to listen. I ran the 10K in 40:52. Paid for the photos and just noticed on the finish line video, one of the elites in front of me almost fainting and needing medical attention. The 10K, we had 1 drinks station. We were lucky with the earlier start time but it was still totally inadequate. The 10K course is poor for 10K runners as well. These events need to be split up and due care and attention given to each specific course and event.
I don't think the water bottles were a issue I didn't find that they were most marathons provide the same type , plus we have been experiencing very odd weather this year so I guess it's hard to gauge it
@@kye455 A few people commented on how the spout was shorter and the plastic more collapsible making it very hard to run with and keep water in it. Not sure how it compares to other recent races (I only do 1 or 2 a year).
True but most of the bottles these events provide aren't particularly suitable really esp whilst running unless they have the lucazade sport style lids guess it all comes down to cost , but overall I didn't have to much difficulty on Sunday with them
@@doncarlosway yea don't think bristol half has ever done gels to be fair which is odd as the bath half marathon you do so may just be a bristol oddity
Ran the Huntly Half Marathon in New Zealand. Managed a PR on this course compared to last year with 1 minute plus improvement. Fairly flat fast out and back course.
I ran my first Gothenburg half marathon on Saturday. Starts are between 1pm and 4 pm. It was 25-26 C and not a day for a PB. It was just a matter of getting to the finish line. They had 9 water stations though.
I feel ya on the weather. I went out earlier today and could only manage 10k before I needed a water/energy drink break. Killer in the sunshine. Looking forward to info on the 'nearer' half marathon.
Raced the Gothenburg half in 24C on saturday. Went in with the goal of just enjoying the race the whole way through due to the weather. Unexpectedly that led to a first ever sub 90 result! Don’t really know how that happened or why I wasn’t that affected, but I’ll take it! You definitely took the right decision though 👍
Well done Edd. 🎉👏 I have learnt the hard way when trying to race in warmer than normal conditions. You understood the objective and performed well. I'm glad you stuck to running on feel. Next Half will provide you with another opportunity. Keep up the consistent mileage and your fitness - it's working well. 💪
This sounds a lot like the conditions in Boston last month. Imagine an entire marathon that starts that late for most, has almost no shade at all, was 73 degrees when I started and reportedly hit high 70’s in places over the subsequent few hours. Congrats on exercising good judgement so you could at least enjoy it more if not hit a PR that particular day! 🎉
Well done Edd, still a very respectable time in challenging conditions. I personally ran the 10k which started at 0930 - and hit a PB of 48:01 but I knew many runners who didn't get PBs nor even close to it. I did feel for the runners who were about to head off for the HM after mine. Organisers could have put on more water stations, not sure about earlier start time since people like yourself coming from slightly further afield would have to leave home quite early (pre 6:30am if race started at 0830/0900).
My first half marathon in the UK was in 2014 at the GreAt Windsor Park. The race started at 2PM on the hottest day of the year. Tough going for the man from the USA!
Here in the Philippines we never have races that starts when the sun is out. I’m pertaining to fun runs. Now triathlon races are different. Usually when we run a full marathon we usually start at 12am latest is 2am. Everything is packed and done by 8am. Heat is not that bad here but what will get you is the humidity. Early morning at 3am when I run then temp is at 28c and when the sun comes out goes up to 40 to 45c.
Thanks for the report. Runners have wound up on the front lines of global warming. Almost every race is getting hotter. Changing the calendar is a challenge because major races are tightly synchronized at this point. Recent NYCM have approached heat records and the original dates were three to eight weeks earlier on the calendar.
You mentioned Rod Steward who is on tour this year over here in Germany, plays in my hometown this week, on the 24th. But I already was at a concert when he was in the Faces when they played here in Nuernberg in 1974 ( no typo and no joke ), so no need to see him again ... 50 years went by so quick ... sigh ...
Don't beat yourself up, Edd. Bad races happen. My last marathon was the worst I've ever taken part in. But I'm training with a vengeance to PB at the same race in October. You'll smash the next one. I'm sure of it.
I've emailed Great Bristol Run about feasibility of splitting 10k and 1/2M routes on Cumberland Rd. Have 1 race north and south of river, join them up again in Redcliffe (wider roads). Could mean shortening of exposed Portway section with little shade is possible. 9am 10k, and 9.45 1/2M starts possible benefits. It would probably require a different finish area aswell (College Green) because of runners completing in quick succession, and capacity limits in Millenium Square. Will see if anything comes of it.
@EDDBUD Trouble is they are unlikely to (Great North Run), and what happens when climate gets hotter.. move it to December? Climate modelling suggests higher Sept temps will become more likely. This attitude of its always been OK in autumn... put it back to Sept.. completely wrong one to have!
Sorry no PB - like mine last weekend as I mentioned to you, I had a hard time stomach bugging me around 8/9 miles. We hit the open road, no shade at the half way mark with 6/7 miles of it and it too was warm and humid. Also saw the FOD runner had heat problems in Cardiff (I think) the past week. BTW, How many miles did you get those smoothing on the sky Paris? Terrible about the runner. over there. BTW forgot to mention in Brooklyn half - there was a guy that needed CPR at the end and did not know what happened to him. NYC runs a lot of races June July and August and even with 7am starts it's still tough (humidity too). Not looking forward to them but need them to qualify for NYC marathon next year. Best of luck on next one and hopefully conditions are better for you to get the PB.
I was in the 10.56am start so basically at my pace running from 11-1 give a few mins. I was fried, toasted and barbecued on the Portway. Couple of people with me dropped out at Queens Square, genuinely wobbling and unable to stand. Starting it at that time with 3 drinks points is ridiculous and dangerous. Well done on being sensible EB
Now that I've run the Coastal Delaware half marathon where the start line was a two minute walk from my hotel room, I don't think I want to run one where I have to get up early and scrabble for a parking spot a long way from the start. And the race began at 7:40am, so I was done and out of the sun at 9:30am.
21°C?? That's tepid. I love a bit of sunshine. A man can work on his tan whilst sauntering around. The Stour Valley 100km event in 2022 took place in 35°C temps. Lovely.
I live in Rimini and running in the heat in the summer months really is a struggle. How many kms have you put into the Sky Paris? PS DJ Qbert! Incredible! I love the Camel Bobsled mix with Shadow.
Sounds like my last HM a month ago. We knew it was going to be a hot day... Spain hot that is... And even so they started the race a 10AM. Way too late. I still started out fast, thinking the sooner I finish, the less hot it will be. At 17km the heat finally got me and couldn't maintain my pace. I was still at sub90 but let go and finished 1:33. Road season is over, back to the mountains!
I was marshalling. It was totally horrible having to tell exhausted HM finishers there were no medals or shirts left - nor were we given any spare water bottles. One guy looked so deflated that I wanted to give him a hug (I didn’t though)
21°C is spot on but not usual for this time in UK I guess. I've ran Wings for life 3 weeks ago and it started at 13h and it was 31°C in country I live in.
Running in extreme conditions is always tricky. You need the right mindset for a race like that. You basically have to forget everything you have been doing prior because it is a different day. The time does not count. It is your result compared to others what really matters.
Thanks Ed. Hard lines, but a good shift. If 20C is too hot for people then they won’t be racing much in England between May and September….. Maybe the race start time is important for those that struggle with the heat.
Race organizers need to use some common sense regarding start times especially at times of the year when it can be hot like it was on race day. 20 degrees is not comfortable at all. Also if you start early, you can wrap things up earlier so the impact to the non racing public can be lessened in terms of traffic and other disruptions. Edd, I'm glad you finished safely and took a sensible approach. It's a shame you couldn't capitalize on your excellent training on race day given the conditions. Next time! 😊
I did the 10K run, but slowly, as I’m at the tail end of a chest infection and I am asthmatic too. I hadn’t done this 10K for a while, but I was sensible with my pacing and got round OK. I got my medal and finisher’s t-shirt, but am sorry to hear some Half Marathoners didn’t. Very annoying for them, given the cost to take part. Really sad to hear about the young chap who passed away 😞. I heard from a work colleague who did the Half, that quite a few runners collapsed. I think there should be more drink stations both for the 10K and Half Marathon. Well done on your time and for getting round the course safely. On a last note, I am doing the Porthcawl 10K in July and hope to give that one a proper go, pending my lungs being in good shape.
You made a right decission to dial down your effort Edd! I am about to cancel my Stockholm Marathon starting at 12:00 on 1st of June due to 20-25°C temperature. Climate has changed in the last few years so it is more to be hot than average history recorded weather. You will achive your planned 1:29 PB just keep pushing and wait for 10°C race conditions until the end of the year.👍
Hi Edd, i saw you on the ground in the shade stretching before the race and said hello! you told me to stay cool, which was easier said than done! i really struggled with the heat and was around 20 mins away from my target time of 2:15. i agreed totally with you regarding the limited water stations and timing of the race. we used park and ride to get into bristol but the return bus after the race left from a different stop, no one seemed to know what was going on. i felt the organisation was quite poor overall. i usually take part in the great south run at portsmouth, which for me is a nicer flatter course and much better organised, and well supported. Well done on your race and excellent channel content....keep up the good work!
Hey man! Yeah my “stay cool” comment was very much tongue in cheek. It was baking out there. It did feel a little strange in terms of organisation this time.
Sorry to hear about the buses. I normally use them going to Bristol University. This is a regular occurrence.. get off at one stop on way in, another stop to leave. Sounds like an information distribution issue rather than anything wrong with the logistics of getting a bus. Well not enough capacity... that was evident on race day.
Very sensible running edd not sure I'd have that awareness to pull back as you did. I ran a 5k on Saturday and straight from the 2nd Km my HR was in the 170s ( went as high as 196). I pushed hard with no PB. Went under 20mins but my legs are still at me today which is mad for me. Sorry to hear of that chap passing.
I didn't fancy this despite living very close to Bristol and working there every day. I did this in September 22'. The start time is asking for trouble...needs change before I consider it again. But well done for finishing, Edd and a sensible decision to hold back.
Well yeah... either the organisation changes or the actions of participants changes or both... take at least 1L of fluid with you if you're running a hot Half FFS...for me it's a 50/50 split ratio. Lucozade to water.
I ran the Bristol Half Marathon and your description was perfect. This was the first time I have seen multiple people collapsing in a single marathon. Very sad that some passed away. 😢
From where I’m from, marathons start anywhere between 11pm to 1am. Halfs around 2-3am. 10ks around 4-5am. This negates the sun exposure and disturbing traffic. The running public prefer this, so we don’t have any complaints.
Definitely makes it tough to race when the heat is on. I'll bet if you check the heat adjusted pacing, you did far better than suspected. We have 32+ here most days on my runs plus very high dew points. Tough to train for sure. Lots of record high temps this year so far. I am running a marathon in Sydney Australia in September and last year finishers had 93F (33.9C) temps. Scary!!!!!
I did the 10km on Sunday. Absolutely loved the atmosphere. It was my first ever event and I was done before it reached peak heat. Re: toilets. I'm not sure how it was later on, but there were more toilets around the corner which no one seemed to realise were there. Signage could have been better/clearer.
@@EDDBUD oh shame. I went just before the final 10km wave and was practically in and out. I would not have wanted to be on the portway with no shade. Most of the 10km had some area of shade. There's a post on the Bristol sub Reddit with the views of some of the volunteers. Parking in Bristol centre is nuts. Thankfully I only had to catch a bus to the event. I wonder why they don't setup specific park and ride areas for such events.
I incorporated watching the start of the Cardiff Bay 10k into SLR. That race starts at 11am and thought that it was extremely dangerous to only have water station at the 5k point. Especially for those runner doing it in 60 plus minutes. I was out for 2.5 hours and I got a little sunburnt.
Sorry you didn't get the time you wanted - I just kept the 90 minute pacer in sight and held on for 1:29:30, I did say hi at the start but I agree the atmosphere & heat had got to you (home advantage certainly helped me as I chilled out pre-race in some shade by the harbourside) - if you do head up again get in touch as you are welcome to use parking/toilets etc. at my house which is only 1/2 mile away! We'll get you that sub-90!
Seems a disaster in the making by starting a race in the middle of the day..we race all spring, summer and fall so it can be almost any conditions..about the thing that stops the race is when there's a lot of lightning flying around..almost every one just start the races around 7:30-8am..some earlier cos it's well past sunup by 5:30am..it is tough to get up early but we're up around by then anyway..kids have to get the bus to school at 6:30 so it's normal..my 1/2 this weekend starts at 7:30 so I will be done just after 9am..my Boston qualifier is in 3 weeks and that starts at 6am..I wouldn't mind if it was earlier..as long as I can see enough to not step on a skunk or a turtle it's much cooler before the sun is up..good race Edd...the ASICS Paris doesn't work for me so I will use my always reliable rocker x2..😊
Hi Edd I ran the Bristol half as well I did see you and gave you a shout just after the 4 mile turn It was brutal that heat and defo more water needed Also very sad about the young runner Can you let me know the half you mentioned in this vid please Cheers
I set off aiming for 1.38 and realised I was going to blow up somewhere between 6 and 10k. I was surprised at how hot 21c felt, a water station towards the end would have definitely gone down well, along with more water at the finish. Gutted for the runner that passed away 😢
This was my first Half Marathon and in my home city. First time supporting a charity too. It was an experience and a largely positive one. The heat was difficult but I kept going - slowly - and got across the line ! Very very disappointed with no shirt or medal. That kinda spoiled things. That all important selfie at the end wasn't possible. Such a shame. The organisers need a proper kicking for that and lack of water stops. Not sure I will do this one again 😮
Great run in tough conditions! I realize you may have been exaggerating for effect, but the average UK temp has absolutely not remained constant for the past 100 years, but rather gradually increased. UK government figures indicate that the average temp was around 8 C a century ago.
Man this sounds a lot like my marathon experience this past Sunday in Cleveland. Giant lines for toilets (didn't get to go before start despite being 45 mins early), unusually warm temps, and next to no shade. It was my first marathon and I've certainly not learned the push on/pull back skill yet so I went merrily about my plan for sub 4. All my training was done in much cooler weather so I never had much issue at these distances with cramping but my gosh I hit mile 19 and my legs just totally seized up. Sadly had to jog/walk the remainder. Was really let down with a 4:27 finish but I am so happy have done it and learned a bunch for my next attempt. Cheers! PS: Would you recommend the Stryd pod given its price? I struggle with judging effort especially for the longer distances and am considering options to try to better understand how hard I am working and if my pace is too hard/not hard enough.
Bristol. Home of trip-hop. Massive Attack. Portishead. That song and video Angel is something to listen to and watch before a big race for motivational purposes. That all your fears you have going into it are all in your head and are nothing more than an illusion. Something that becomes crystal clear after you cross the finish line and conquered those fears no matter what your time is. Plus, Daddy G is a fast runner at short distances, especially when you feel your life is being threatened. Aren't we all. 😂
Another great video Edd - always appreciate the honesty and insight when things don’t quite go to plan. Don’t think you said in the video - how many miles have you got in the Metaspeed Sky Paris now? Considering them for an October marathon.
Ran the bosworth half marathon this weekend was a hot one but kept it steady till the last 5k then pushed on. I wore my sky Paris the week before in a hilly 8 mile race and had a shocker. Not sure if I prefer them to my next %. Got a few 10k races coming up do you think they could out perform the N%2?
10:30am start, that is just crazy especially when it is hot. In Adelaide, South Australia the start would be 8am at the latest but some runs start as early as 6:00am to beat the heat. No wonder it was hot, I think my optimal temperature is around 10 - 12 degrees. 3 drinks stations are not enough, should be more especially when it is warm, not sure what the organisers were thinking.
Great review. I have a race coming Sunday but it starts at 0930 and will be 27°C at the start and over 30°C by the finish.. I think I will skip this one.. 😂
Ah well done. Did well in hot conditions. Always good to be part of an event like Great Bristol Run. My second Great Run 2024 medal, after Great Brum Half 2 weeks earlier. I think there was an over reliance on hydration provided by organisers if I'm totally honest, and not enough people planning and getting hold of drinks/electrolytes themselves. The race likely becomes inaccessible if organisers have to cater for every single thing that people might want sorted out... too expensive. Do it yourself. I need to plan to alternate between 250ml of water, and 250ml lucozade every 5km. Two/three gels plus 1 spare for a Half. If weather conditions mean I don't drink or use it all it doesn't matter. Experiment and work out what your needs are. Park and Ride at Long Ashton was ridiculous. I think someone forgot to open the car park gates at 6am, leading to a back up of 1000s. Abandoned the idea, and drove to Cabot Circus. Jogged across city and only just made my starting time.
@@EDDBUD Well a few lessons learnt.. don't rely on there being enough water, or there being a bus free to take you. Hold onto the positives.. most people overcame any difficulties and finished. The run in Birmingham was for dementia care wards, they are now £310 better off.
Is it possible that your arm band didn't pair with the watch initially? I've had that happen once. The weird readings could then have come from the wrist sensor.
I did the Birmingham half Edd it was a nightmare it was so hot lots of people needing medical attention not good to see there should have been more drink stations too and definitely not a PB I was hoping for a time of just under two hours it took me 2:29 which is awful but to be honest I was just grateful to get round in one piece
I saw the man being worked on they was doing CPR and shocked him numerous times but they didn't manage to bring him back. Unfortunately it this all happened about 400m from the finish line on the track, they didn't have any blankets around him for ages so all the runners had to run pass him and saw everything. Even the spectators could see alot of what was going on. I found it sad he didn't get his privacy. I did the 10k in the morning by 8 - 9 k it was hot and was glad it was nearly over.
Terrible situation. All of that type of organisation at similar public events falls on stewards in a football ground, or it would be marshals at a race. Organising screens so the runner could have some dignity. Getting people away from the casualty being revived. It is a bit much tho to expect an unpaid volunteer to deal with that level of stress and upset. Mentally scarring for them.
Running in heat is lovely if it it's short and it's easy paced. You did the smart thing by just getting round, no need to endanger yourself.

True but most of the bottles these events provide aren't particularly suitable really esp whilst running unless they have the lucazade sport style lids guess it all comes down to cost , but overall I didn't have to much difficulty on Sunday with them
This was the first Marathon I ran where there was no energy gels or energy bars, just water. Very disappointed especially for the price
That’s a bit more like it water wise. 👍🏼
I feel ya on the weather. I went out earlier today and could only manage 10k before I needed a water/energy drink break. Killer in the sunshine. Looking forward to info on the 'nearer' half marathon.
Did the Newport half a few weeks ago. Couldn’t believe the toilet queues. Fortunately I got there very early. A good training run for you in Bristol
Nice one Ed. I was pacing at Chester on Sunday and it was already super hot by 9am 🔥
I still feel frazzled.
Good seeing you after the race!! Certainly a tough day for us all 🥵
A punisher! Drank a great deal after the race!
Nice going, I sympathize with those condition, today the temp is 10c hotter than last week. Only I was not smart and didn't adjust my pace.
Yeah the day before we had torrential rain here. The next day blistering sun!
Well done Edd. 🎉👏
I have learnt the hard way when trying to race in warmer than normal conditions.
Yeah I wanted the medal for my boy. Wasn’t going to let him down!
Well done for recognising it was time to ease off and just enjoy being part of the event. At least I got the :27s right in my prediction!
🤣⏰
Well done Edd, still a very respectable time in challenging conditions. I personally ran the 10k which started at 0930 - and hit a PB of 48:01 but I knew many runners who didn't get PBs nor even close to it. I did feel for the runners who were about to head off for the HM after mine. Organisers could have put on more water stations, not sure about earlier start time since people like yourself coming from slightly further afield would have to leave home quite early (pre 6:30am if race started at 0830/0900).
Good work on making it through!
The heat here is not dry. It’s quite uncomfortable and we have such changeable weather it makes it tough. Not as tough as 28c though!
Thanks for the report. Runners have wound up on the front lines of global warming. Almost every race is getting hotter. Changing the calendar is a challenge because major races are tightly synchronized at this point. Recent NYCM have approached heat records and the original dates were three to eight weeks earlier on the calendar.
Certainly things are changing. Just had 22c temps today then 5 mins ago a crazy rain storm and the roads are flooding!
You mentioned Rod Steward who is on tour this year over here in Germany, plays in my hometown this week, on the 24th. But I already was at a concert when he was in the Faces when they played here in Nuernberg in 1974 ( no typo and no joke ), so no need to see him again ... 50 years went by so quick ... sigh ...
Time goes by way too fast my friend. 🤣
I know you have it in you to get the PB, but yeah the heat has really been taking it out of me lately as well. Totally get it!
It’s quite humid here and not a dry heat.
Don't beat yourself up, Edd. Bad races happen. My last marathon was the worst I've ever taken part in. But I'm training with a vengeance to PB at the same race in October.
You'll smash the next one. I'm sure of it.
Thanks for the good vibes Sir 👍🏼👊
I've emailed Great Bristol Run about feasibility of splitting 10k and 1/2M routes on Cumberland Rd. Have 1 race north and south of river, join them up again in Redcliffe (wider roads). Could mean shortening of exposed Portway section with little shade is possible. 9am 10k, and 9.45 1/2M starts possible benefits. It would probably require a different finish area aswell (College Green) because of runners completing in quick succession, and capacity limits in Millenium Square. Will see if anything comes of it.
Moving the race to September will give better temps all round and no chance of the 20c we had on Sunday
I think I’ve got about 75 miles on those asics. Though in fairness it’s “hard” miles of racing and top speed training. It was way too hot for me
I was in the 10.56am start so basically at my pace running from 11-1 give a few mins. I was fried, toasted and barbecued on the Portway. Couple of people with me dropped out at Queens Square, genuinely wobbling and unable to stand. Starting it at that time with 3 drinks points is ridiculous and dangerous. Well done on being sensible EB
Hope you’re feeling ok now. I was frazzled for a couple of days.
I agree Ed, the local facilities were overwhelmed
I did the Henley Spartan Beast that weekend and it was very hot!🥵 not enough water stations there either unfortunately
Now that I've run the Coastal Delaware half marathon where the start line was a two minute walk from my hotel room, I don't think I want to run one where I have to get up early and scrabble for a parking spot a long way from the start. And the race began at 7:40am, so I was done and out of the sun at 9:30am.
Yeah a good 1 hour 20 drive was enough to contend with!
21°C?? That's tepid. I love a bit of sunshine. A man can work on his tan whilst sauntering around. The Stour Valley 100km event in 2022 took place in 35°C temps. Lovely.
No it’s not tepid. Crazy trying to run in that weather
@@EDDBUD - Better get used to it or buy an indoor treadmill buddy. Global warming's gonna make 21°C feel like a cold bath pretty soon.
Global warming. Hah! in a record heat wave in 1923-24, temperatures reached 100 °F or more on 170 consecutive days Marble Bar Western Australia.
We all run bad races, in certain conditions, fair play for what you did.
I live in Rimini and running in the heat in the summer months really is a struggle. How many kms have you put into the Sky Paris? PS DJ Qbert! Incredible! I love the Camel Bobsled mix with Shadow.
He is skilled beyond belief. Amazing sounds
Both running and rock and roll in Spain are hard to do!
@@EDDBUD from April - September it sure is 😄
@@patrickvanderwal6324 I recall djing in Spain back in 2003 and they didn’t start till midnight as it was too warm. 🤣
@@EDDBUD ...and they tend to finish dinner around 23h. 😂
@@patrickvanderwal6324 A very different and relaxed way of life.
Same last Saturday here in Sweden at the Gothenburg half marathon. 25c lots of people collapsed and hospitalized.
😮😮😮 That’s up on the water in Sweden! Ouch!!
I don’t know how I PR’d in this exact race 🥵
I was marshalling. It was totally horrible having to tell exhausted HM finishers there were no medals or shirts left - nor were we given any spare water bottles. One guy looked so deflated that I wanted to give him a hug (I didn’t though)
21°C is spot on but not usual for this time in UK I guess. I've ran Wings for life 3 weeks ago and it started at 13h and it was 31°C in country I live in.
Yes for the uk is very high
Next time! 😊
It’s a shame but I shall keep on training for the next opportunity.
I did Hackney Half on Sunday, was bloody boiling too. Managed to break 90mins for the first time. Was tough though! 🥵💪
Super running!
@EDDBUD thanks mate!
Hope your chest improves soon and you can really enjoy the next one
I ran the Brooklyn Half Marathon! I set a PB 1:42! I wore the metaspeed sky Paris !
We had the same conditions at Chester half on Sunday, bit of a nightmare 🥵
It was a punisher. Impossible to run anywhere near threshold effort consistently.
You made a right decission to dial down your effort Edd! I am about to cancel my Stockholm Marathon starting at 12:00 on 1st of June due to 20-25°C temperature. Climate has changed in the last few years so it is more to be hot than average history recorded weather. You will achive your planned 1:29 PB just keep pushing and wait for 10°C race conditions until the end of the year.👍
Afternoon Edd.
Hi Edd
Ran the Gold Coast 30km event 2hr30
My weekend 11 mile run was hot as well. 82° Fahrenheit It will only get worse here. Thanks for the recap!
We need some races in hot weather as well 😅😅😅
Good effort, EDD 👏👏👏
I ran in 2014 the Bristol half, first week of september, good race
Yeah wish it was back to September. Did that one in 2021
Hi Edd, i saw you on the ground in the shade stretching before the race and said hello! you told me to stay cool, which was easier said than done! i really struggled with the heat and was around 20 mins away from my target time of 2:15. i agreed totally with you regarding the limited water stations and timing of the race. we used park and ride to get into bristol but the return bus after the race left from a different stop, no one seemed to know what was going on. i felt the organisation was quite poor overall. i usually take part in the great south run at portsmouth, which for me is a nicer flatter course and much better organised, and well supported.
Sorry to hear of that chap passing.
i would be happy with that time. good job 👍
Thanks! I had been training hard but it wasn’t the day for it
I didn't fancy this despite living very close to Bristol and working there every day. I did this in September 22'. The start time is asking for trouble...needs change before I consider it again. But well done for finishing, Edd and a sensible decision to hold back.
Yeah an earlier start in sept would be ideal
Well yeah... either the organisation changes or the actions of participants changes or both... take at least 1L of fluid with you if you're running a hot Half FFS...for me it's a 50/50 split ratio. Lucozade to water.
I ran the Bristol Half Marathon and your description was perfect. This was the first time I have seen multiple people collapsing in a single marathon. Very sad that some passed away. 😢
Yes it was awful to see this
I hope to see you at another event and get some more trainer advice. Keep the vids coming
Ed - I live and run in Singapore. I am ever so slightly thinking you have a bit to learn on your definition of hot…
If you live here 20 is warm. Normally average is 10
From where I’m from, marathons start anywhere between 11pm to 1am. Halfs around 2-3am. 10ks around 4-5am.
This negates the sun exposure and disturbing traffic. The running public prefer this, so we don’t have any complaints.
We need a similar approach in the summer
It was extremely busy just before the first wave of the half.
Oh!
🥇
I incorporated watching the start of the Cardiff Bay 10k into SLR. That race starts at 11am and thought that it was extremely dangerous to only have water station at the 5k point. Especially for those runner doing it in 60 plus minutes. I was out for 2.5 hours and I got a little sunburnt.
You still did good!! Well done!!👊
Much appreciated offer!
Hi Edd I ran the Bristol half as well I did see you and gave you a shout just after the 4 mile turn
It was brutal that heat and defo more water needed
Also very sad about the young runner
Can you let me know the half you mentioned in this vid please
Cheers
Oh hello!
The medal and TShirt was in the bag red bag at the end. Did they run out of bags??
Great run in tough conditions! I realize you may have been exaggerating for effect, but the average UK temp has absolutely not remained constant for the past 100 years, but rather gradually increased. UK government figures indicate that the average temp was around 8 C a century ago.
Well slight increase in this case but it’s gradual. Not the plus 10 extra we had over normal.
21C and under the sun I think it was a great finish! Congratulations for the good effort! 💪
Thanks 👍🏼
Hello!
Bronze medal 🥇 Chug some pickle brine pre race. Embrace the brine. Much sadness about the young runner.
🤣
No music was taking away the heat on Sunday!
@EDDBUD
Maybe a more appropriate song would have been Highway to Hell 🔥🔥🔥
Another great video Edd - always appreciate the honesty and insight when things don’t quite go to plan. Don’t think you said in the video - how many miles have you got in the Metaspeed Sky Paris now? Considering them for an October marathon.
About 75 ish now. Great shoe and in fairness the wear is all hard racing or training.
That's a crazy start time. In the States all my races are at 6 or 7am.
Yeah we need more of those
Ran the bosworth half marathon this weekend was a hot one but kept it steady till the last 5k then pushed on. I wore my sky Paris the week before in a hilly 8 mile race and had a shocker. Not sure if I prefer them to my next %. Got a few 10k races coming up do you think they could out perform the N%2?
😊
Wow, that’s a late start. Most local races where I live start 6:30 - 7:30.
Yes for me I love about 9 or 10c
Managed a 1:19:37 at Hackney half on Sunday. Sympathise on the heat !
Great running!
Race in Gothenburg Sweden this weekend also saw some 40 people collapse during the race and two having a heartattack from the heat and exhaustion....
Not good. Too warm for me the other day. Still feel a bit dodgy now
Great review. I have a race coming Sunday but it starts at 0930 and will be 27°C at the start and over 30°C by the finish.. I think I will skip this one.. 😂
My word! That’s warm
Now that’s some dedication! Parked near temple meads and got a quick getaway!
It seemed to be paired. Just didn’t want to work!
Out of curiosity, what kind of shoe glue you using for the out sole?
It’s the shoe goo v2
@@EDDBUD 👍 handy to know
I saw the man being worked on they was doing CPR and shocked him numerous times but they didn't manage to bring him back.
So sad to hear this. It’s really awful 😢
