A very enlightening video. Many thanks! I always lock my bike up in public where I can see it, say, while in a cafe. And I'm almost never more than five seconds away from it so I can protect it from a would-be thief or prankster. Never lock up next to another bike or where someone could lock up next to my two-wheeler. Don't use bike corrals either due to potential unintentional damage. I just found out in this video exactly why crowded bike corrals can be bad, but intuitively I've always avoided them. Some people really don't care about your stuff, for sure. Lady at a farmer's market told me to use the bike corral, as I was walking my bike around the place. I politely said, "no thanks." Besides, cyclists are allowed to walk their bikes there. I guess, the bike bothered her since she had to pivot out of my way, as she wasn’t looking where she was going.

I love the fact that I can bring my Brompton with me everywhere and it will definitely become my everyday bike. Luckily I can bring all my bikes inside with me. I’ve had bikes stolen before and its a bitch.
Part 2 is coming soon... The video has been delayed because of a tool I ordered that was delayed. Now I have the tool I am going to start making part 2 and show people how easily your bike can be stolen...
I live in Nottingham (UK) and there are two options more secure than the street. The local authority runs a number of cycle lock-ups for which you need a smart card to gain entrance. The rail company has something similar at the station which needs a fob you swipe to gain entrance. Both lock-up schemes have CCTV monitoring. Since the Covid-19 crisis we have a plague of bike thefts though. A cycle lock will not resist a battery disc grinder. The increase in the popularity of cycling's downside. Now I only take my Brompton where it can go indoors WITH me. The other alternative is the family rat bike. It is in perfect mechanical trim but I keep the frame brush painted with a few rusty scabs. The 27" wheels and sturmey-archer 3-speed do not make it the thieves' first choice. Sad times.
I feel what you are saying. I thought about getting a beater bike myself, but the brompton solved those problems for me and I could not be happier. No more worrying about my bike whilst I am inside.
my girlfriend had the quick release on her front wheel pulled open. we discovered it after going downhill with abut 30 mph (50 kmh). the bike (normal 28 inch ebike) was outside on the bike rack of our camper van. also i got my brompton 3 days ago. when i'm not using it, i keep it inside my house. when i'm using it, i keep it by my side. i went to ikea yesterday, just put it in a shopping cart and wheeled it trough the whole store. 😅
The finalty of the product of the folding bike, it's not to leave outside and take with you each time inside. I have never leave and locked outside always with me. I am totally agree with you about what you've said 100%. Interesting topic 👌🏻
I lost two Dahon folding bicycles in broad daylight in the middle of the day in Pasadena, Los Angeles. One happened in front of a Tower Records store. People were locking their bicycles at the bike rack for a long time. But a bicycle thief suddenly hit Pasadena. I came outside around 1:00 pm to find my valuable Dahon missing and the cut cable lock dangling from the bike rack. Right after that. No one locked their bicycle at the bike rack in front of Tower Records. My replacement Dahon got stolen right outside a newspaper and magazine shop on Colorado Blvd around 12:00 pm with loads of people walking past the bicycle rack. Again the douchebag cut the cable lock, right in front of so many witnesses who kept walking by. All I can hope is that he one day encounters bad karma that he was dishing out by stealing.
I got my customized fixed gear bike stolen in long beach at shoreline aquatic park they either used a bolt cutter or a reciprocating saw. This was an area I had safely locked my bike for 5 years with no problem for hours. This is a very busy tourist attraction too. Bike thieves are the scum of the earth becasue we get very attached to our bikes and put hours into maintenance and customizing with aftermarket parts.
@@ibikeunfolded bikes are definitely not safe my U lock was not some thin u lock it had a thick metal and was still cut very easily lock technology has not caught up to bike thieves tools. Cities need to have a secure place to park bikes with like some sort of bike locker I wouldn't care of they charged a fee.
I feel your anger and frustration, too, brother. My 1998 Dahon was a high quality model no longer manufactured. It sold at a decent price. In today's prices it would sell at three to four times the original cost. I had just paid for a complete servicing and new tires at a bicycle repair shop outside Pasadena. For several months after moving to Pasadena there was no problem with bicycle thievery. Bicyclists parked their bicycles at the bike rack in front of the Tower Records store. Then suddenly a bicycle thief either moved in or else discovered Pasadena. It may have been more than one person. But the bicycle thief or thieves began scoping all over Pasadena, looking for bicycles to steal, in broad daylight in front of passerby. I bought a second Dahon folding bicycle. My beloved first one was long out of production. My second Dahon got stolen right outside a magazine and paperback book store on Colorado Blvd just before 1:00 pm on the sidewalk with dozens of people constantly walking by the store. I purchased a third Dahon and after that asked to bring it into every store I visited. @@Jesus.X
Agreed NEVER lock one outside. They are like gold dust now due to stock shortages and are targeted. Had my B75 stolen whilst popping into a supermarket two weeks ago for 10 minutes!!! Loved that bike, now have bought a new M6L SL now which I love also. It gets you though as to where your stolen bike is - just hope it is being looked after.
I was waiting for the mentioning of the one safety issue I noticed with my folding bike: that any kind of lock on its low frame will necessarily be near the ground, providing thieves with that critical extra leverage for their bolt cutters. I'd never leave a Brompton outside, I very rarely do so with my cheapish Tern which - considering its resale value - may not be actually cheaper than a Brompton but somewhat useable on European cobblestone roads.
I actually mention that point in part two. I just have not released that video yet, because the audio got messed up and I am trying to figure out how to fix it.
Accidental damage and wear and tear drives me nuts, I spend a lot on bikes and i want to look after them.. I have an invisframe (there are cheaper options e.g. helicopter tape) installed on MTBs and I’m putting one on my new Brompton to help protect the frame. On the rare occasion i have to lock a bike up, which will be out of my sight, I park it in a busy location with passing people but in a place where it wont attract attention e.g. obscured behind other bikes, near something more desirable, and i use locks that make it look harder to steal than those around it.
I would never leave my brompton outside because it's expensive, desirable and folds. I got into an argument with the security guard at the entrance to a job I had just started. He was insisting that no bicycles are to be brought inside and that I should lock it up. Well I didn't have a lock as I have never needed one so I just stood there until a manager came down and told me where I could store it. Weird thing was that I have brought the brompton back to work since then on multiple occasions if the weather is good and seen the same security guard and he hasn't said anything since.
Just use the cover bag on those rare occasions if the security guard is being stupid, but what ever you do dont lock it up out side REPEAT AFTER ME, I WILL NEVER LOCK MY BROMPTON OUTSIDE.
I live in South Korea and theft is very low. People will leave their laptops in a coffee shop and leave their bikes anywhere . I STILL would never lock up my brompton bike outside
Bike theft and vandalism is also very low in Japan and Singapore. I have occasionally locked my Brompton outside (in Singapore) but only for short periods of time.
Sometimes it’s inevitable. I’d say yeah, it’s a gamble, so just do it for brief moments when there’s no alternative, preferably not half the day and definitely not overnight. Unless you’re rich and u set different priorities.
I clicked on this expecting reasons like "because I can just wheel it inside" or "it fits in the train" but instead it just became misanthropic whining about how supposedly people won't respect your fancy folding bike and shocking stories you probably saw on Facebook. Nice vid! Btw a quick release can just come open from kicking it or otherwise, and cables can work loose from not being properly tightened after regular adjustments. check your bike and own work before riding instead of getting mad claiming a life threatening prank, maybe it'll save your life, you'd do it if these things are actually as important as you say
One of my earlier videos where I “told it…not showed it”. Excuse the grammar…. I’m actually making a follow up video where I highlight the forth reason which I did not mention in this video….it will be more interesting.😁
In my house, there is a room for bicycles and someone (who needs a key for this room) put some oil to the disk of my brake. Felt the brake was trying to work , but I needed nearly 20 seconds to stop my bike. The brake pad had to be changed, the disc could be cleaned. So now I keep my bike in my living room.
@@ibikeunfolded fortune favors fools 😁 every time I start a ride, even after 5 minutes without seeing my bike I check my brakes, so there was no traffic.
i removed all the quick releases on my bike and either use a security type skewer or regular nuts and bolts. anything that can be broken off will be taken, like lights, nice bike seats, etc. If i get a flat tire, I just ride home on the flat, i won't lock it up and come back later, unless i can get back within the same afternoon. I'm not that heavy, 150lbs, and the road bike wheel is still good (i've ridden home with a flat on that wheel several times). I'd rather just damage the rim than lose my whole bike. I just saw the other day on craigslist, someone asking if anyone has seen their bike. They had a flat the night before, and they had locked it up in a back alley that evening and walked home, planning to come back the next day. They came back, and it wasn't there, they think they forgot which alley they locked it up in. But it probably was stolen. One other possible prank is people could lock their bike lock on to your already locked bike.
That’s why I don’t understand why someone would lock their Brompton up outside when they don’t have to. Why worry about your bike when it’s totally unnecessary. There are all kinds of street punks that would love to steel bikes or it’s components and resell so personally I just bring my Brompton inside and live a worry free life.😀
People vandalising your capitol building have a politcal axe to grind. They won't give a shit about bikes. Yes, there are nasty people out there that would, but I just think that was a bad comparison.
hey Brian, Thank you for your video. I had a question, I notice that you have a Garmin computer on your Brompton. I was thinking of getting one and wanted to know what you think about them. I will be using mine on my Brompton too but don’t know which one to get.
I am going to do a video on the Garmin computers soon. To answer your question.....well it depends. Some are geared for performance cycling like measuring power output, heart rate, cadence, etc etc. Mine is a farm in explore. It has the mapsets and turn by turn navigation. It is geared more for the explorer......hence the name, so it doesn't have all the performance features.
I would never leave my Brompton locked outside on the street. But I have left it locked WHILE IN PARKING LOTS from establishments that didn't allow me to enter with a bike (even if folded) , like my local Cinema cultural complex, some museums and some department stores. Usually, those parking lots have guards. I even go up to them and ask them to keep an eye on my bike.
The only bike I ever locked up outside was at work and it was a SS hack bike, Brampton's are designed to be taken in to buildings and if security have an issue use the appropriate IKEA bag or just tell security that is you disability tool/help etc.
The main capital government building is the only one that's denied my entry with the Brompton. Part two is coming soon....in addition ---a very special brompton video highlighting this very issue.
I travelled to Denver from Cape Town with my Brompton just over a year ago. It is a beautiful city! And it is even better by bike. I brought my old M3L from 2000 (which I have taken all over the world - Africa, through Europe, Asia, the Americas). They are awesome bikes. But yes, I never lock mine up! Check my channel for a few long distance riding videos on the Brompton and various trips. Thanks for the video!
Another gloomy video. I really hope you end the next episode by highlighting the fact that you don’t need to lock a folding bike outside. The whole point of having one is that it can always, or almost always, be with you, under your desk or next to a chair etc. Emphasise the positive!
Life is not all positive and I am going to do a video on this subject soon. Just because people on TH-cam seem to be all sunshine and rainbows, doesn’t mean that is how they are in real life. Humans have a range of emotions for a reason. It’s is bad for a person mentally if they suppress their emotions and pretend to be positive all the time regardless of how they feel.
I lock up my electric Brompton and leave it every day. I even lock the battery to it. I’ve been doing this every day for about a year and a half. Nothing has ever happened to it. I use two very secure locks. Every argument you give could just as well apply to parking your car. My car cost more than my Brompton and I don’t refuse to park that anywhere. If I can’t lock up my bike and leave it, there’s no point in having it in my opinion. I know people are saying to fold it up and take it with you, but it’s heavy and cumbersome. I don’t want to be lugging it round central London with me all day.
I ride my bike in London. Bikes just DO get nicks and scratches, it's part of the fact that they are tools in daily use. It is extremely unlikely to actually affect the bike (maybe a tiny bit of surface rust if left untreated). Maybe chill out a bit and get on with riding it.
This is the whole point of a folding bike. It's coming inside. On the rare occasion I've had to pop into a store in Croydon. I turn on my 3 alarms and put my cafe lock on the wheels. My alarms have gone off on a few occasions. And it scares the crap out of people. And I would never use quick release. Don't do it. Its too easy to tamper with or steal the wheel.
...Oh I have to lock it outside the fitness studio (couple of hours per week)... the lockers are too narrow to fit it in... A trick is to fold the backwheel and to park the other way around.... people stupidly parking near you is never completely avoidable... risk of theft and vandalism can be minimized with a good lock, in well arranged park spaces (people are parking much more expensive E-bikes there)... Using it more and getting the full potential means you should accept some more wear and damage... and it is possible cause you do save money and time by using it more!
Yes, it is really going to be crazy if you have your bike with you and cannot enter the Royal Albert Hall in London for a trial because you have a bike with you. It is really crazy not to get to the Eiffel Tower because it is not allowed to take a bike with you. It was also not allowed in a bag. It is really crazy to be in Rio de Janeiro and not to put your feet in the Atlantic because there is a strip of insanely fine sand in between, which you can only overcome with a push or push with your bike. You also won't come to the Moma Museum in New York City with your luggage because there is a size requirement. The beautiful park in Manhattan "high line" is taboo for you by bike. Carrying or pushing a bicycle is not allowed. If you don't want to miss these attractions, you are unfortunately forced to connect your bike on site. So you have made the right reaction to these impossibilities with your head beating clear. To miss out on the best things for which you have traveled a lot, just because you have a bike with you is incredibly stupid. If your bike is worth so much then leave it at home. If you don't have the money to buy a new one then leave it at home. Complete it and think about what you could do if you had the courage to do it. I have my Brompton for city tours and enjoy exploring everything. I also weigh what is safe. But chance brings strange situations. In Chicago, for example, I received a note with a number when I checked in at the aquarium. Back I should get a wheelchair.
I can understand not being able to bring my brompton into amusement parks or tourist attractions, and in those cases I would leave it home and take an Uber.
when I'm on a city tour, I get involved in unexpected events. The public rehearsal in the Royal Albert Hall came unexpectedly and I loved visiting the hall where Minuin played the violin and Rod Stuart let go of his “sailing”. I do not plan but would like to be free to choose. One reason to use a bike. The detours lead me to my important events - not the Uber ride.
@@andreabruehs1280 you gave an excelent example with the beach sand in Rio. If anyone is riding their bike along the beautiful beach front and don't dive in the ocean just because they're afraid of leaving their Bromptons locked up, than they got it all wrong. People get so shaky when we say locking the Brompton that they don't realize it happens in the vast minority of occasions. If ever. But anyway, done discussing about it. Hope these people never miss anything in their lives over the fear of having their precious Bromptons scratched.

I wouldn't leave my Brompton locked outside for any length of time, but I have left it locked for up to 30 mins. while I'm shopping. People saying you can take it anywhere... you can take it most places but not ANYWHERE. I really hate that Brompton ownership type of BS talk.

You do have good quality bikes there and really taking care of it especially the brompton. Thanks for these videos, it was very helpful and i learned a lot.
Manufacturing brand of brompton should have you as their spokesman to point out all the bad things that can happen with your current cycle unless you buy a Brompton. i would like to slap you on the back you made some great points that even i did not think of well done mate.
No, I am too ugly to be a spokesperson. 😂😂. Thanks for watching
Curious. Are only guys the people who watch your excellent videos? I'm sure many females enjoy riding bikes. Keep up the excellent videos. Having worked security for thirty years I appreciate your common sense tips.
My videos are watched my 95% males and only 5% females. 🤷♀️ go figure...maybe I am not Handsome enough😂
I'm half waiting for this guy to finish talking about how he would NEVER lock up his Brompton and start telling us why his favourite animal is a liger.
A liger?

Awesome, if people would see what I have seen they would never leave any of their bikes outside....
Great video! You are doing a fantastic job putting these vlogs together
Not really, I am an amateur. I try though...thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching.
I’m doing a part two video about bicycle theft and how your bikes are not safe- should be eye opening.😬
The best locks in the world can be broken easily by a professional thief, that’s why the brommie goes in with me everywhere👍
well duh, the whole point of getting a folding bike is so that it's space-efficient & you can take it inside.
I know right.
If I ride it to the gym, is it more reasonable to take it into the gym ? I never own a foldable bike and am not sure about it.
Very insightful. Ride safe bro.
I try, but sometimes I think they are out to get me.
The bike locking things seems the least of your troubles, move cities.
One of these days. I plan to move overseas at some point.
@@ibikeunfolded You're welcome in The Netherlands. Perfect country for bikers !
😉😌 agreed
Accidental damage and wear and tear drives me nuts, I spend a lot on bikes and i want to look after them.. I have an invisframe (there are cheaper options e.g. helicopter tape) installed on MTBs and I’m putting one on my new Brompton to help protect the frame. On the rare occasion i have to lock a bike up, which will be out of my sight, I park it in a busy location with passing people but in a place where it wont attract attention e.g. obscured behind other bikes, near something more desirable, and i use locks that make it look harder to steal than those around it.
I am trying to get my part 2 finished that addresses that very subject. You might find it interesting.
I have never encountered someone that wouldn't let me bring my Brompton in, but if I do, I will say,” if my Brompton can't come in, I won't either”.
Theft here is very high and that’s why I mention it to people. I agree, never leave outside.
Where’s part 2…?
Some good general advice but more Brompton specific would make this vid better. Thank you
Thanks, the brompton specific part was more in the last half of the video which I made into a part 2 for length reasons.
not bike related, but can i ask what's the model of your glasses? do they have a magnetic clip?
They are Ray Bans. I don’t have a magnetic clip and probably should think about getting something like that.
Thanks mate i never thought of those problems
What is a capital building? I'm from the UK.
It’s the central governmental building for the state of Colorado.
@@ibikeunfoldedI see. Thank you.
Very dangerous thing for someone to do. People don’t understand that they can really hurt someone by doing such things. Glad you were not hurt. 👍
@@ibikeunfolded fortune favors fools 😁 every time I start a ride, even after 5 minutes without seeing my bike I check my brakes, so there was no traffic.
I only lock my bike outside when I go to a cafe and there's a bike rack right in front and I can look out the window to check on it.
i removed all the quick releases on my bike and either use a security type skewer or regular nuts and bolts. anything that can be broken off will be taken, like lights, nice bike seats, etc.
There are all kinds of street punks that would love to steel bikes or it’s components and resell so personally I just bring my Brompton inside and live a worry free life.😀
How do you attach the kickstand?
Is part 2 coming? What has the point you were going to make in part 2?
Just what we were looking for in the csmper.
People vandalising your capitol building have a politcal axe to grind. They won't give a shit about bikes. Yes, there are nasty people out there that would, but I just think that was a bad comparison.
I really wasn’t comparing the two in that way........ I was merely stating that Lawlessness is lawlessness.
Thank you for the informative video. For me this world need more love, thanks again.
I agree....thanks for watching.
Thanks for your video - I couldn't agree with you more.
Part two is coming soon and it’s a real eye opener😳
hey Brian, Thank you for your video.
It is geared more for the explorer......hence the name, so it doesn't have all the performance features.
brian d vlogs Awesome thank you 😊 I will wait for your video to make my decision.
Vital info,thank you Brian.
Thanks for watching.
Is the Capital Building vacant?
Lots of good points made as usual.Highlights re prank section that some moronic folk just dont consider the potential consequences of their actions.
Thank you.
Where is part 2?
I think the whole point of owning a Brompton is that we don’t need to leave it anywhere we can fold it up and take it with us.
hii. i have s6l and it seems little uncomfortable for long ride, so can i cange its handlebar like p type with existing cables? please reply
used to see a lot of bike-wheels looked into some bike holders
it's a bit sad
I thought the idea of having a Brompton bike is that it's foldable so you can take it with you and put it the hell away, amiright?
I can't find your follow up vid ???
The exact point of a Brompton is that you take it inside. Why would you ever lock it outside?
I wholeheartedly agree.
Awesome, I plan on doing some trips when all this health crisis stuff dies down. I will check out your channel..thanks
Locking a folding bike outside defeats the purpose of owning a folding bike.
so where's part 2?
Still working on it. There is a surprise I’m working on that’s taking forever to get done.
@@ibikeunfolded Cool 🙂 Thanks for the reply, wasn't sure there would be one on such an old clip.👍
I’m doing a video about this subject that will blow your mind.
This is a massive worry about the city you live in. You are analytic where I would just be frightened
All cites seem to be getting worse as time goes on.
I ride my bike in London. Bikes just DO get nicks and scratches, it's part of the fact that they are tools in daily use. It is extremely unlikely to actually affect the bike (maybe a tiny bit of surface rust if left untreated). Maybe chill out a bit and get on with riding it.
Your videos are cool BTW 😀
Thank you, I appreciate that.👍
Over in the UK, it seems to be a national sport to jump on people's wheels and bend them. That and snapping new trees.
Even I started to worry about your Brompton bike
You should add the link to part 2 in your description.
My dads Brompton got stolen from a train station bike locking shed.
Sorry to hear that. I am hopeful there is a special place in hell or the under world for bicycle thieves.
@@ibikeunfolded too right! 😂
5:28 Break windows of a capitol building? How did you know about Jan 6 so early?
Vandalism is not a big part of any major city… just the ones who don’t care about culture, nation and cohesion anymore.
10:40 i tend to have some wet wipes in wallet or hand disinfectant for non-bike reasons.
seem convenient having a bike that shouldn't ever need to leave your side though.
I love my electric brompton. Its so much fun but I cant bring it to work or to some other places because I literally cant carry it to the 5th floor by myself. Im thinking about locking it outside…..
I wouldn’t. 😬. Bromptons have high resale rates-very nice target for thrives.
At MINIMUM take the battery inside
OMG Brian either you must be super unlucky or live in a totally fucked up city. 25 years cycling in London had a couple of bikes stolen by professional thieves but no vandalism, pranks etc.
The reason why I don't leave brompton anywhere is that I can take it with me anywhere I go. 🙂
A bike is a tool!!! Not your Gilfriend! Treat it well, but do not get upset about conventional dammage!
Vandalism is an other thing!
Quickrelease... Really? First thing upgrading a bike, is get rid of them!
I never lock any of my bikes outside. My bike goes in with me.
I don't own a bike lock for that reason... and not going to get one.
Also don't own a clunker... and not going to get one.
I couldn’t agree with you more.👍
I wouldn't leave my Brompton locked outside for any length of time, but I have left it locked for up to 30 mins. while I'm shopping. People saying you can take it anywhere... you can take it most places but not ANYWHERE. I really hate that Brompton ownership type of BS talk.
Well, I take my Brompton anywhere folded. I have been denied a couple of places unfolded, but after folding it I was granted access. But that’s just my experience
Keep it up!
I generally don't recommend people lock their non-trashy bike on the street, so do making Chinese characters tattoo, which seldom get done right. In your case the calligraphy is dang horrible and the words makes no sense at all
Fenix Yuk well I got the tattoo when I was 18 to piss my father off so not much thought was pit into it.
Where is everybody. Was this shot early in the morning.?
So we are equating what appears to be last years protest to bike vandalism? Sheesh, gimme a break...
Why you should never lock up any bike you plan to continually own outside.
Out of curiosity, you even bring your bike when you need to go to the toilet? lol....
Safer then leaving it out side.🤪
brian d vlogs So I still need to buy a bicycle lock, just in case this situation. Like your video, very useful info always. Thanks & good day!👍💪

I know right. It’s pure Stupidity in my opinion. I am still trying to make part 2, but I am having trouble, which it why i have not put a part 2 out yet.
Geez... seems like Denver is a pretty douchbag city (with all those issues of people messing with bikes).
Lots of douche bags here, no doubt. I will show some in future videos.

Also people letting your bloody tyres down !!
Do you live a car-free lifestyle? Appears that you do.
Yes got rid of my car years ago. Never looked back.
brian d vlogs thats awesome...good on you for that
Good points also, the bikes as expensive AF!
Exactly.
letting air out of the tyres is a popular trick that stupid people deploy.
Locking their bike to yours is another one.
Tying the wheels to the frame so they cannot rotate ... thats annoying.
Chain dislodged from the cogs. ... yep ! another one.
Usually some low life that gets amusement from trivial " victories".
I know exactly what you mean and have seen some of those personally. I just bring my bike with me and avoid that problem. 👍
It's a hate filled world toward bike
