    These are fun. Using acrylics or gesso on the page can stop it from bleeding through and give a bit of tooth to hang onto the oil pastel. I used to lay down the oil pastel over acrylics, then use a blending stump with a really small amount of solvent on it to blend the edges. I mainly used wooden boards though, not paper and it only worked the way I liked it once there was enough pigment on the board and stump. It felt like you were waiting for it to warm up but thinking back, it was probably a layer of melted pastel from the solvent. The walnut oil worked really well! My style was a lot tighter though so I don't know if any of this would give the effect you want. It's fun to experiment though and see if the magic happens 🤗

      Thank you! I love the experimentation too! In one of my videos, I forget if it’s this one, I mentioned applying gesso on the back of the page to prevent the walnut oil from bleeding through. I tend to prefer working with pastels on the plain paper instead of gesso or acrylics I feel like it makes the paper too slick and nonabsorbent. For more expressive, mixed media work I will put a small amount of pastels over acrylics and gesso. So glad you are enjoying the videos.

    Yes, Forget the gamosol and the walnut oil. Use a non-toxic alkyd gel instead which seems more compatible for good oil pastel. Gamblin has one , but I prefer Webers Res-n-gel instead.
    When using cheaper Mungyo make sure the cardboard sheath is used over the box top to help hold the oil pastels in place. Also, I recommend removing all the paper wrappers so you can hold them in various ways like a soft pastellist does. Don’t limit yourself to only crayon marking and smudging or blending with your fingers. Use good heavy duty 100% rag printmaking paper or archival matboard to sustain the greasiness of the alkyd gel. I aim for 30 layers of oil pastel and find my technique is a cross between oil painting techniques and soft pastel techniques. I agree, good oil pastels matter. Holbein and Sennelier are the best and most highly pigmented with high quality mineral oil and mostly the best levels of color fastness. Mungyo blends well and they are creamy with some good color choices. I like the set of 48 because the box has three rows…. I reorganize the sticks. Left row is all light colors, the middle row is for medium colors and the right row is for the remaking dark colors.

    This is by far the most helpful and honest review/comparison I've seen so far. Thank you for taking the time to make this video! It's impossible to read the characteristics of a medium when soeone is making tiny swatches, so I really appreciate the larger one you make. It's so much more clearer.
    Look forward to hear what you think about the sennelier oil pastel fixative. This is the only oil pastel fixative I've used since everyone seems to recommend it. It takes me about 4 coats to make it somewhat sketchbook safe (I don't use wax paper) although many say 2-3 should be sufficient.

    hi linda, thank you so much for this video. i love seeing the results you got from the Mungyo product. i have not used them again since commenting last week. however, i don't remember the crumbling that you experienced when i used them. i live in FL tho, and i think it makes a difference...in fact, i wonder if i will be able to use the pastels in my journal because of the extremely long drying time for oil down here. not knowing how to actually use pastels i was fascinated by how you drew with them but then worked them as paint. duh. i hadn't thought about it that far! lol. that's what happens when you don't know how to use product! but to be fair, i had only seen other artists applying them over acrylic for texture and depth...they were only smudging with fingers and i thought, well, i can do that! now i want to paint with them! thank you and i love both of these paintings.

      Hi Terry, I’m so glad that you enjoyed the video and liked the paintings! So you probably already know this but oil pastels never dry completely because of the binders used in them. Oil sticks/bars are pure oil paint and will dry. I wonder if you will have problems with the oil pastels getting too soft in the Florida heat? You might want to try putting them in the refrigerator before you use them on very hot days. I think most pastel artists do just apply layers of pastel and then smudge to blend them together. I really enjoyed using the walnut oil with a few drops of Gamsol though

      @@BeginnersMind-ArtMind hi again. ok, so, i used my Mungyo set down here a couple times since i saw your video. not all the colors, of course. none of the sticks i used had any crumbling at all. so i think there are two conclusions that could be drawn. one is that Mungyo has quality inconsistencies which is certainly possible. the other is that climate, or climate while transporting is a factor. when my set was delivered it had been sitting on my porch in hot direct sun for hours...in fact, i was worried that the sticks might've melted and was relieved when they had not. the package was quite hot inside the padded envy and it has been hot and humid since i got the set. the artist i saw using them and recommending them originally is suzanne allard, who also lives in the same part of FL as i do. also, i thank you for saying that the pastels never dry completely. i did not know that. i have noticed as yet the pastel is not rubbing off much onto other pages, which is nice. thanks again for those great comparison videos.

      @@terrygetz2225 I’m so glad that you found the reviews helpful. I still have to review the Caran D’Ache that a viewer gifted me. I think you are spot on with your thoughts on climate. I know that without a doubt on the Paul Reubens the more my body heat warmed the sticks up the easier they were to lay down. I also think your thoughts about manufacturing inconsistencies could explain a lot too. I’ve been experimenting with spraying my pastel paintings with the Sennelier fixative and so far I really like it. I think the waxy pastels are going to transfer less onto other pages then the softer ones like Sennelier. There was no doubt at all that I like the Mungyo better than the Paul Rubens. You have me wondering now if my set was defective because the crumbling was crazy.

      @@terrygetz2225 I bought two sets of the Mungyo handmade soft pastels and there are certainly quality control issues there, especially with the colours that are supposed to be the same: they aren't! It did me a favour in colour terms with those because it gave me more colours, but it would be very frustrating to buy them for a specific colour option and them not to be the same.

    I have just bought Mungyo pastels so this video has helped me in respect of how I can use them . Can you advise what paper is better to use would a tooth be beneficial ? I should imagine that framing them behind glass would be better . Is it possible to seal them and leave them without glass , if so what would you recommend sealing them with . Thank you so much 💐

    • @BeginnersMind-ArtMind
      @BeginnersMind-ArtMind  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Sonia, yes having a paper with tooth helps you add more layers to your pastel paintings. You can also add clear gesso to smooth paper to give it the tooth needed to grab the pastels. I also use it on my smooth sketchbook paper, but you can’t get as many layers that way. With oil pastels you want to start with thin layers and build up to thicker application towards the final layer. Pastels are usually fixed with a spray fixative. I apply multiple coats of. Sennelier spay fixative. if the work was to be displayed, it would be framed behind glass after fixing it with spray fixative. I hope that’s helpful and I hope you’ll consider subscribing to my channel if you haven’t already. 🖍️💕

    I am now more torn than ever as to which pastels to buy next. I have the complete set of Sennelier oil pastels, but the expense puts me off using them, so I just look at their beauty: like a piece of art in themselves! I have Pentel: tiny, but lovely and soft. Craypas Expressionist: medium softness, but nice to work with. Daler Rowney: medium softness, nice to work with. Derwent Academy: like trying to paint with a bullet as they are so hard. Aldi supermarket: lovely soft oil pastels, but they only do them in a 12 pack so very limited colours. Lidl supermarket 48 pastels for a fiver that are on the firm side, but very vibrant with a really good range of colours - work good on sand paper. The supermarket ones are so cheap they are great for practice. What on earth shall I buy next? Choices, choices, choices! Thanks for the review as it gave me lots more to think about and stopped me making a rash decision and throwing more money away!

This channel is about encouraging people to develop a creative practice as a coping skill. One of the only rules here is that I do ask that commenters not to say or imply that the way someone is creating here is wrong, or trying to change the way someone is creating. I find this review very interesting. I've seen a bunch of reviews comparing Mungyo and Paul Rubens because where I live the Mungyos cost 40€ and the Rubens cost 30€ so I want to see which one is more worth it. I still can't decide because every video I watch is different. I've seen reviews where the Rubens blend like butter and others like this one where they just won't blend. I wonder if the climate has something to do with it. Or maybe the pastels are an old batch? I don't know but I find it interesting and somewhat inconsistent to the point where I cant decide just yet.

    • @BeginnersMind-ArtMind
      @BeginnersMind-ArtMind  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Loati, It is very confusing and this may be why: From talking with other reviewers it sounds like the Paul Rubens used to be better quality but they are currently poor quality. Perhaps the company changed hands or changed their formula. In my experiments, in my climate here in Vermont, USA, Mungyo preformed better. The comments from the people that watch my videos seemed to agree with that. The other thing that makes it very confusing is that artists have different opinions and different tastes about what works best from them. I took a look at the Paul Reubens reviews and the Mungyo reviews on Amazon to see if I could find out more information for you. Mungyo has a much higher number of positive ratings. There are also a few comments on Paul Reubens about them being very sticky and inconsistent, which was exactly what my experience was. I hope that this information is helpful for you and making your decision on which pastel is right for you. Good luck!

    The baby oil works great, it doesn't have bleed through like some of the others. It partially dissipates because it's such a thin oil. Thank you for all your hard work to give us these wonderful videos. And even with it sped up, it's a joy to watch you paint!

      Thanks for letting me know you enjoy the videos! I prefer walnut oil because I’m chemically sensitive and it’s not a petroleum-based mineral oil. Baby oil is a byproduct of the process to refine crude oil. I also can’t tolerate the smell of it.

    As far as i know you should gesso the actual page your working on with 2 to 3 coats as other channels who specialise in painting oils on paper said that not doing it would cause the paper to break down in time. The gesso protects the paper from breaking down. This should be on the side you're painting on not the back of it or it won't work to prevent damage to the actual structure of the paper.

      I’m going to share a couple of thoughts in response to your question that I hope will help let go of limiting thoughts like that. Oil pastels are very different from oil paints. I never use oil paints in my sketchbooks because of the issues they present and since my channel is geared towards people with chronic illness most of us can’t tolerate using oil paints. I do however use oil pastels in my sketchbooks. Sometimes I use clear gesso for added grip and sometimes I don’t and I’ve never had an issue. Also I think a lot of creators get carried away worrying about their sketchbooks being archival and lasting 200 years. I just don’t have the capacity to believe that anyone is going to care about my sketchbooks that long after Im gone, LOL. So my most important advice to my viewers is; play, experiment, explore, have fun in your sketchbooks. Do all the things “They” tell you “Never to do”. It’s your creative playground, hold it as you own sacred space with zero rules. Enjoy making art with no boundaries or rules and it will open a vast world of new experiences for you! Happy creating! 🎨🖍️💕

    • @tabbi888
      @tabbi888 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @BeginnersMind-ArtMind I know oil paints are different to oil pastels however I presumed that it was the solvents added that would be causing problems. As to your other advice you do you, it's definitely valid to play and should be encouraged however I was just pointing out for those who are uptight about their sketchbooks. I have a sketchbook from my great grandmother which is over 100yrs old and treasure it just as my kids say they want to continue collecting them from the family. I also have artwork from my mother who's passed our family just seems to collect it so it's important to some. I was only remarking for those type of people, it was certainly not meant to undermine the validity of experimentation and play. I myself have extreme fibromyalgia and hashimoto's and am mostly bed ridden but art is about the only thing that brings me joy when I'm up to it, unfortunately not as often as I'd like, so I definitely understand about the chronic illness thing and am all for encouraging everyone to try art as a way of finding some happiness and fun in an otherwise bleak existence. Wishing you the best ,keep having fun doing what you love.

    The paper you are using has a different effects in your testing, so I am a little bit deceive, furthermore this same observation is noticeable in the way you put pressure to each of them and concerning the dilution with gamsol or else, Paul Ruben is diluting well with turpentine, Sennelier with Gamsol and Mungyo with mineral oil such as linseed oil or baby oil! This my humble opinion, but it is all depending what effect you want to obtain on different paper with different techniques, furthermore when I am doing swatches I never look the name color written on oil pastel, but I am choosing the similar colors instead! I do love your art and good continuation! Keep being inspiring with love!

      Hi Danyel, Thanks for supporting my channel by leaving a comment. I’m sorry but I’m not quite sure I fully understand your comment. My channel is called Beginners Mind - Art Mind and it is about exploring, creating and supporting each other’s creativity despite our struggles with chronic illness, pain, grief etc. As a person disabled by chronic illness I make free videos to share with other people that may also be struggling with debilitating pain and illness. I do all kinds of videos, in some of them I share what I liked and didn’t like about all the art supplies my viewers send me as gifts. I did a series of videos where I tried out some pastels that viewers had sent me as gifts and asked me to give my opinion on, some I loved, some I liked and some I didn’t like at all. I used them the way I would normally use them and came to my own conclusions. None of these items were sponsored, they were mostly gifts from my generous and supportive viewers. No matter what conclusions I come to about a product I highly recommend that everyone use the materials that they like and enjoy working with as I do. I’m just here to help others cope with the rigors of pain, illness and grief by encouraging their creativity and by sharing my journey through my own illness with my creative process.
