    My mother in law was a hoarder. It was a amazing how much she had in a 1 bedroom apartment and 1 storage unit. Most of it was in boxes, so we moved it to our garage but never really wanted to take the time to tackle it. We took advantage of covid time sitting at home to finally go through it. We kept maybe 10%. I took us 3 trips to the dump, 2 to the recycle center and one to good will. Plus we filled up probably 200 trash bags. Now that we finished with her stuff we starting going through 30 years worth of accumulation of our own stuff in closets, spare bedroom etc. so our kids never have to deal with this type of issue.

  • @m0L3ify
    @m0L3ify 3 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    "It seems like people who hoard hoard clothing" You would be correct. My ex was a hoarder and when I packed his stuff up after he left 8 years ago, there was 300 gallons of clothing. That's ten 30-gallon trash bags full of clothing, many with the tags still attached! And this was all from a tiny 2-br apartment and all he managed to save from his previous divorce. He had this fear when he bought things that they'd wear out and he wouldn't be able to find them again, so he'd buy 2-3 of the same exact shirt, etc., and then just store them in piles or in the closet. But he'd never wear out the first one. The pile of clothes in the bathroom was so huge, it didn't echo anymore. I only tolerated it at the time because my mother had been a hoarder when I was growing up. It's a strange disease and I'm very happy to say I don't live the same way. Just finished doing the Konmari method on my place and I've never been happier!

    • @m0L3ify

      The funny part was he was so emotionally dysfunctional, he had this pattern of blowing up his life and running away over and over. So when he blew it up with me and ran away, he left me in charge of getting his stuff out of the apartment. Abandoned everything. As much work as it was, it was actually convenient, because when he showed up a month later with a U-Haul to get it all, I didn't have to let him in. I just pointed him in the direction of the storage unit and said "Have fun!" The funny part of the story is that he grossly misjudged how much crap he had, and the van he'd rented was comically too small for the load. He and his buddy (translated: husband of the woman he was now grifting) literally spent all night trying to puzzle-piece it all in and they eventually had to leave some stuff behind for me to throw out. It was good for a chuckle. I didn't mind taking his 3-ft high Captain Morgan statue to the dumpster. 😂

      @@m0L3ify My ex was a bit like that as well, but less specific about things he'd hoard. He'd go through stages with different hobbies and just become totally obsessive about that hobby. I finally convinced him to get help and he got a diagnosis and some good therapy, but he blamed me for everything that went wrong and would never go to couples therapy. Somehow, he connected the fact that because I pushed him to get help, his diagnosis was my fault. The marriage didn't survive, but he's doing a lot better now and has a new lady who seems much better suited to him (read *younger*) and seems much happier and more functional, apart from the fact that he took early retirement and decided to not work anymore. I guess now nothing gets in the way of his hobbies, including his children.

    Inspires me just to box stuff up and take them to Good Will. But . . . I used to look at these situations and just shake my head. Hurt my knees a couple of years ago, and it is amazing how things can just flat pile up when I can't clean and put things up. I am not a compulsive shopper, but just keep things in place is so important. Hope you find treasures!

    As the camera panned through the room some very valuable items were seen. The owner should get a mid-century and vintage clothing buyer to evaluate the items. It would take some time and money, but it would well be worth the investment. The owner of this house was well aware of what they were collecting.

    I've seen lots of beautiful lamps as you've been going through this house this is the second or third episode I've gone back and forth forth through the 3 episodes. Please be careful of the once they're like the French ones they have a lot of detail on them and you'll have to wrap them carefully so they don't get the details broken off and some of the shades are really delicate too. but they're very collectable surprisingly enough. The other thing that I'm seeing is mid-century lamps either ceramic or wooden those with the shades can bring a lot. I'd be interested in all the handwork like crewel an embroidery on the walls there she's got a lot of it! I just love that stuff somebody put a lot of work into it and then the closet at least one of them looks like quilts be very careful I'm sure I don't have to tell you that they could fall apart at the seams and they could be worth a lot of money. I think you'll make your money back double at least

      We have about a 500 sq foot basement to go through. My husband's grandmother's house. We actually live in the house and have for 10 years. The house looked very much like that one. Grandma didn't do banks so she had cash everywhere... In junk mail envelopes and catalogs, wrapped in fabric in newspapers... couldn't throw anything away without thoroughly checking it first. Took us a year to go through and get the house livable then renovate. Have only done 1/2 of the 1100 sq ft basement. We both worked full time. A couple years ago I became disabled and can't get to the basement on my own now.

    Interesting and fun dig! Vintage textile peeps like me would fall down her rabbithole in a heartbeat. That sewing book belongs in my library.
