i have watched the new series on fx ... it is so dark and cold that it seems impossible that the two are children of the same parent book. this original series is so much more engaging, educational, and entertaining.
This scene is probably the that made me fall in love with Yoko Shimada. Someone posted on this channel or another about her last days on earth and I don't care, she will always be my first love.
Enjoy these colours, this peacefull, normal human atmoshere , feelings of a banned love. Plus an original Japanese countrysite, and compare with the new , dark, dull, VG like 24 version..
I can't watch Shogun 2024 anymore, it's awful. Stopped at episode 7, just couldn't stand it. The grace of Shimada and the real Japanese actresses in the 1980 show has been utterly lost.
The basic problem with the new rebooted Shogun series and why it is so inferior to the original version is simply this: you cannot repaint a masterpiece. 😊
Shogun 2024 started well, but fell off a cliff quickly. It does Blackthorn dirty, but 2024 Mariko is just awful, a charmless distortion of the character - Shimada's performance is sublime. I can't watch it anymore. Seeing how radiant Shimada is here just makes it worse.
They do sound exactly the same albeit the difference in intonation and inflection. Learning to speak Japanese is easy, but learning to read and write Japanese is difficult.
I can't imagine the level of difficulty Mariko must have had learning English. From what I gather its much harder for Japanese people to learn English than vice versa. Japanese is a hard enough language with its unique sentence structure.
The interview video on this channel states that the producer's own son helped with coaching Yoko Shimada with English and was going back and forth between her and his father to refine and edit her lines so that she understood what she was asked to say.

Shimada was excellent in the role, her warmth and charm shone through, even though she barely spoke English.

This one of my most favorite scenes in the original mini series and the book. I was not happy when they decided not include it in Shogun 2024
