If you ever wanna talk Words & Pictures Museum hit me up - I spent my formative comics making days there and it was AMAZING. Met so many cartoonists thanks to their shows, many I’m still friends with, and several pros emerged from their staff as well. Made a world of difference to me as I was getting started. They even carried my first mini comics in the museum shop. Life changing place. 👍

Steve Lieber was a year ahead of me at the Kubert School when I was going there. I'd see him sometimes on my way back to my place on Blackwell street. Nicest guy ever. I'm always happy when I come across his work in a comic.
As far as the school itself, well...you can get a lot out of the school if you are proactive about it like Ed was talking about. I did the same. The facilities were falling apart even when I was going there back in the day. Still, I made some friendships there that I still have to this day and the Kubert School is kinda like a weird little club in a way. I still run into Kubies in the animation field.
The Mike Chen talk is funny. He tried to pull that move with a couple of kids in my class and a couple of them were kinda thugs. One kid told Mike, teacher or not, if he tried that again - it wouldn't go well for him.
Ugh, I colored that Magic the Gathering piece that was in "Picks" section. I had to turn it around in a day and it was only supposed to be an internal pitch piece for the Wizards of the Coast people. It was never supposed to be printed and that's why they low balled me on my rate for that.

I think part of the appeal of Gen 13 at the time is that it wasn't so "grim & gritty" as a lot of the other stuff that was coming out right then. It was just a lot more fun, even though I was still really into Cyberforce and WildC.A.T.S.
Ed made me think of this quote when he mentioned all the "superstars" he went to The Kubert School with who never went on to comics greatness (it's almost like there's no substitute for simple hard work):
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”
    ― Calvin Coolidge

Man, I graduated JKS in '04 and got there from a Wizard article as well (Issue 82). This brought back so many memories. Went back to the school in 2016 and they actually sold half of the land in the back, demolished it and now they only have the rooms that they actually use. Good times!

As a kid I did leave comics because I wasn’t exposed to real Indy comics. So happy that later I was introduced to ware, burns, clowes etc etc. These days are an amazing time to be comics fans with all the amazing reprints available and all the amazing creators putting out new work.

Hey, replying eleven months late! Thanks for the shoutouts. Re: Tom S, I was in Pittsburgh for an extended time in 2001 dealing with some family stuff, and he invited me to visit and work in his home studio. It turned out it he was in the same apartment building that I’d lived in back in the early 90s!

ReBoot had some legitimate comic book connections. Brendan McCarthy did some of the character designs. Dan DiDio wrote on the show, and his work writing on animated shows led him to DC, where he would be in charge for about a decade.

I love J. Scott Campbell and we all love to give Liefeld crap for his anatomy. Those legs on the cover are HUGE. The average knee comes halfway up the chest. Those are going past the head. Those are some nine-foot-tall giants. This is also before he lengthens the torso.

I picked up Scud 1-4 at Wondercon not long after this issue came out and became obsessed! Still one of my favorite comic series of all time.

Larson inserted himself in the David/McFarlane debate with some brutal 2 page long replies to David's letters in the back of Savage Dragon

I concur with what you said at about 22:20 about leaving comics if you hadn’t found indie comics. I was the same way, except I didn’t find indies and did get out of comics around this time.

Reminds me of my time in the Art Institutes animation program where I started with a class of like a 100 and I graduated with 3.

As always a great video! I like Dixon and David as writers and sure as hell NOT a big fan of politics or authoritative fanboy bullshit from these guys! They should do what they do best & tell stories! Joe Kubert and George Perez are the gold standard of how creative people should carry themselves! I was in my mid 30’s and immersed in the real world and love comics, NOT fn school yard antics! Absolutely love KAYFABE! Your enthusiasm shines through the bullshit of the hobby and ALL 3 of you are out there being creative and walking the talk! Thanks again! KEEP MAKING & READING COMIX!

I went to the words and pictures museum as a 8 or 9 year old TMNT fan, ran past the art to get to the kids section on the lower levels. That poor place was ahead of its time, kids wanted to see turtles, their parents didn't read comics and I doubt there was much inbetween

I couldn't tell what was going on in Sovereign Seven. I took the correspondence course from Joe Kubert's school. I would get it back (Eventually) and there would be nothing but red marks on the tracing paper showing me of how to correct the many bad things on my page. The Dover mail office was said to be pretty slow. :)

McFarlane won the debate fair and square by taking his shirt off, making everyone imagine Peter David with his shirt off. Pretty much game set match after that.

50:30 I remembered a really intense story about how Aquaman lost his hand and spent a lot of time looking for that story. This isn't it. Then I watched a documentary on the animated series where Aquaman and his baby are chained to a hill underneath an underwater rockslide. They don't show what happens next but it's implied. Aquaman cuts his own hand off to then pull his other binding and save his son. They show his arm wrapped in a red towel to get by the censors. It's an intense moment I'd rank up there with the Dark Knight or Death of Superman.
You guys, I have youtube on autoplay all day which goes to your channel a lot. I listen to stuff twice no problem. I went to 8 years of art school and I've always loved comics and am flipping through some right now. Your show is like the thoughts I had in my head as a kid that I never thought I'd hear out loud. I never thought I'd hear Klaus Janson or Dave Gibbons et al explain in length how they went about entertaining me 40 years ago. Priceless.
