I thought no one could equal Leonard Bernstein, but Maestro Myung-Whun Chung is just ethereal in his rendition of Mahler's Symphony # 5 Aagietto. I now can go to 2 versions and cry while listening to them. You can feel the passion of this Maestro, and I am with him. Thank you to the Japanese and Koreans for appreciating this legacy that Western culture has gifted to the world. Carry on. An admirer from the United States.
I don't understand why this iteration of the adagietto makes me weep every time I hear it. I've heard so many versions including Bernstein's but this, this hits me so hard.
I think too, it is the most beautiful, from-the-depths-up-to-resolution upon a conductor's face I can remember. So much was there in the struggle of that' man's face and body. Amazing.

I love this version mostly because of how the music just seems to dramatically descend at the end, like a glorious sunset, and the last few notes would be the peaceful night sky that follows
In my long listening experience, this is one of the best melodies ever, music for the soul. I listened to Chung live many times in the past, and now he is more and more refined, I think he has grown to higher and higher peaks. He and NHK Symphony Orchestra, render this heart breaking music at the top, I hope as Mahler himself would have performed. Every time I listen to it, it's a pure ecstatic moment.

I have 4 favorite versions: Bernstein, Chung, Karajan and Tennstedt. They all take about 11 minutes 30 seconds, although the Bernstein approaches 12 minutes.

I used to work in a dance theater as an usher... and numerous dance companies use this stunning piece.... so i'd not be expecting it and every time WOW !! Imagine listening to it on a gigantic sound system in a large theater!
