Slumber on in peace, sweet Maestro Mahler, on this 105th anniversary of your crossing into spirit ... And may the angels surround your final resting place at Grinzing until Resurrection morning! Your presence on Earth for your brief 50 years, so tenderly graced this planet and we give thanks on this day for all the beauty that your brilliance brought to brighten our lives. Bless you!.

The melody is drawn out and everything is exaggerated just like it should be when we play it. Every crescendo and decrescendo in the phrasing is noticeable which shapes the "dramatic feeling". Watching and feeling the music is key.

I like the quicker pace, though sometimes the longer versions suit my disposition. Mahler was certainly a genius and most unhappy in his domestic and/or love life apparently, and died young. But a lot of his music is poignant, and certainly suits our disheveled world in the 2020's. Maestro Abbado is one of the greatest and left much recorded music, without the showmanship, trendy glitch that some have fallen into.

Abbado doesn't lose any of the emotion or intensity of feeling with the faster tempo. In fact , it's even more intense and heartfelt at this tempo with Abbado conducting. Abbado is irreplaceable . I now prefer this tempo to Bernstein's much longer recoding with VPO.

+ Tenor Man: I so agree with you! Mahler himself conducted this masterpiece at a faster tempo and I agree that Abbado mastered the Adagietto at this lovely tempo. Abbado was my all-time favorite interpreter of Mahler's genius, and may he composer and Maestro Abbado rest in peace.
