Pearl is exquisite. I love the moment when she is looking right at Ru and not flinching. Then saying - do I have something in my face was iconic. Pearl calmly stood her ground unapologetically. Legendary.

I think (other than willam) pearl may have been the first girl to fully give the "girl, bye" energy when it comes to trating Ru as THE queen when she walks into the work room. Ru got his start through a man called Dick Avery who sent him to live in NYC with Nelson who put him in touch with the who who of that period. & also he should speak on Marsha P Johnson who unalived in 1992 & Sylvia Rivera who he knew who started STAR . Why did Ru ask about the drinking question? That's so odd. I'm guessing it's because of Pearl's drug use history in the past, which of course Ru knew of. Was he trying to trigger Pearl by asking that? It sounds like he was trying to hit a soft spot there.
Maybe trying to get her to be vulnerable with a back story or something. The vulnerability plot line is prevalent on this show and they seem to single out Queens who show the most promise at winning

Ru had the tea (past substance use) and fired it, Pearl calmly disengaged (haven’t been drinking, no drama about sobriety) and then Ru is left with the withering nothingness that does _not_ make for good TV. Yes. Ru Paul asked about her trauma and Pearl declined respectfully but firmly, which I thought that was very beautiful, a healthy and sane thing to do for her. Ru Paul's attitude spoke volumes. That's when I understood that Ru is torturing these girls, pushing them to do something outrageous and maybe even possibly harmful to themselves. All of his self-help talk is very disingenuous. I find it very hard to watch the show now, specially after hearing contestants talk about it. I prefer to watch Queens produce their own content
Getting Pearl to talk about their recent sobriety would have set Ru up to offer words of advice from their own journey with sobriety. It’s a device Ru has used multiple times since, with other queens… Juju comes to mind.
Possibly but I think it was more about trying to get pearl to "wale up". Like oh you're show in Chicago is food because you're brave to open up from the alcohol.
There’s a trick to catch people lying where you stand their silent after they have answered your question if you want to get more of them. It works pretty well but if you’re not lying (OR psychotic) it doesn’t work and just CRAZY awkward.
Pearl is one of the only queens to really keep it real about the show's production and Ru specifically. She's such a badass for that and I love her so much. No other queen would dare say that to her lol

Toward the end of the season, they did that thing where they show the contestants a childhood photo of themselves, and goad them to get emotional.
It was especially strange with Pearl, because it seemed like they were trying to get her to divulge childhood abuse the way things were worded.
I'm surprised more people don't bring it up because it struck me as extremely exploitative.

That’s the nature of many reality shows though, especially competitions. Nothing makes for good tv like someone talking about their trauma and it’s saved several contestants on Drag Race too. Roxxy Andrews and Monica Beverly Hillz both cried on stage and trauma dumped when they were being critiqued and in the bottom. I think that went swayed the judges into saving them.
Yes! I thought the same, and I was livid. Pearl talked a little bit about it in her TH-cam channel and it's so infuriating how you can tell she was NOT ready and probably still isn't ready to talk about something so private and hurtful to literal STRANGERS.
Last time I checked on him, he bought a van with his hubby and was remodeling, hope he is healing 🤞🏻

When the Blair thing happened, I remember in an interview she said that she hadn't even told her mother about it! that the first time she ever talked about it was in the show and idc what anyone says I just *know* she was borderline forced to.
I dropped the show completely, it's absolutely vile.

I really think Ru related too hard with Pearl... like, not to be an armchair psychologist but usually it's people who are most like you that rub you the wrong way. Still super unprofessional for her to do this to Pearl -- Pearl was a baby when she was on the show, like, an infant and obviously going through some stuff. Not cool.
Personally I think Ru was trying to stir up a "we need to see your vulnerability" storyline/arc with Pearl and Pearl wasn't biting which got Ru flustered. On the one hand I get Pearl's side of how artificial reality TV really is and becoming somewhat disenchanted with the experience because of it and not wanting to play into it, on the other hand based on the Emmys the show has grabbed alongside how it continues to grow it's safe to say Ru's figured out a winning formula so maybe we shouldn't knock it so hard.
I agree, but I do have a feeling it's not that Pearl doesnt want to engage in it, not wanting to play into it, but maybe because she is clueless about it, like she probably doesnt know what Ru wanted her to do.
For example, like Kameron she clearly doesnt want to engage into the production side one bit, be it with her competitors or with the judges, but with Pearl, its more like she just didnt know what to do, she didnt know how Reality tv works. I mean, even when she won the despy challenge, Max reacted more than her.
I just rewatched S7 and the untucked and looking back, I feel like her personality is not "sleepy", it's more like "ok... so.. now what?", which is the worst thing for reality tv star. Fame is clueless, but she is airhead funny clueless that can entertain people, but Pearl needs holding hand on what to do.
I dunno; on the one hand I think RuPaul has a very cynical but effective understanding of Reality TV that helped to make the show so popular, but I also think the show has struggled from minute one to work against how remarkably UNCHARISMATIC RuPaul is to anyone who isn't like... a straight person who just finds drag inherently novel. Her sayings are trite, her fondness for pop psychology is eyeroll-inducing, she keeps trying to make slang happen that no one picks up (who says "kitty girl" other than overly-enthusiastic bachelorettes?) and bottles of ink have been spilled on the profound mediocrity of her music career. She doesn't even do her own drag anymore, and she has judges that NEVER did drag rather than bringing on any of the many pillars and legends of the US drag community to judge. For all that we joke about the "as gay people we get to choose our families" moment, that was like the ONE moment I ever thought of Ru as being actually present in the moment and interacting with contestants on a human level, as opposed to having the cogs turn in her head.
I bring this all up to say: my experience of watching RPDR has been, since early on, one of struggling past RuPaul and the wince-inducing production in order to actually be introduced to drag talent I don't know about (and occasionally cheer on a hometown girl)
Nah ru wasn't flustered at all, she was pissed. I think she want intimidation, she wanted reverence, she wanted pearl to be flustered and she wasn't and that irritated her, couple that with the fact pearl is the kind of drag that RuPaul does not relate to or appreciate, hot, passing white, conventionally hot out of drag, I do also think ru was probably in a shit mood but yeah nah the whole interaction was weird af
You're overthinking alot that's such a reach making alot of assumptions. He's very charismatic to people who are LGBT. But he's a judge on the show so he isn't going to be overly charismatic to the queens. However we can see over the past 2 years the production and rupaul are alot kinder to the queen's needs/mental health and it's become less drama Infused. In that single moment I knew Pearl became one of my favs of all time. I grew up in deep east oakland and I never bucked clucked or tried to run up. The producers didn’t allow us to know her & socially I too was looked over and barely noticed but when it’s comes to standing my ground, not conforming and really having my own back. We’re ICONIC… the energy we conjure is NEVER a game. She a REAL one. Forreal forreal and that’s why I am & she is an unfruckwitable Legend🙌🏾

girls like pearl and adore truly were trailblazers for the way they treated queens on this show. it's really apparent how much more gentle they are in their approach w contestants within just a few years of s7 and as2, and even more compared to how they treated people in the earliest seasons.
Every season gets harder and harder to justify supporting this semi-exploitation. Might be time for me to sashay.

It's a reality show , they all do it. But I will say the recent seasons seem to be treating the queen better. I would say before 2020 most reality TV shows mistreated cast very badly because they were aware of me talking health struggles and focused on ratings.

Just did a rewatch of S7 and honestly Pearl was deeply underwhelming in almost every challenge and constantly complained and said she wanted to go home. It is clear the producers pushed her forward due to her sex appeal and an otherwise dull cast.

My theory is that Ru wants specific things from her contestants: humility, backstory to overcome, and quick wit/land the jokes. Pearl is a favorite of mine, because she’s so genuine. But I don’t think Ru felt like she could work with it, and it pissed her off. I think Ru also enjoys being doted on, and my guess is Pearl didn’t do a lot of that either.
