Excellent video content. As an architect, sometimes is hard to give a simple definition of what is Architecture, cause there's so much involved in it's process of creation. And that you explained the fundamental part, through a good investigation and define it in such a simple way, it really amazes me. Thank you for this amazing video.

I was once on a boat in the city of chicago. It was an architectural tour of the city narrated by a staggering individual. That individual brought to our attention things like having a window in the corner of an office building; How the buildings were raised above the ground to allow for underground transportation; organic shapes of the building; warehouses and factories repurposed at later date; construction of riverside parks and patios, etc. Twist: Having said all this, the city of chicago is very small compared to the planet, which is nothing compared compared to the solar system, which is even more neglegible compared to our galaxy and so on.

Holy crap, this is one of your only videos. How!?!?! It takes other people years of practice to make something this good. Where'd you get so good at this?

Amazing video, I bought Townscaper because of you, the simplicity but the intricacy of how you explain your architectural videos are just my type, together with the stunning visuals and editing is just like Davinci painting the Mona Lisa, a masterpiece.

Great video! Food for thought. I prefer your first definition, the work of a lead builder. Work and builder implies an act of creation. And work by definition is a deliberate act. Introducing a place in the definition makes it too narrow. It’s no longer applicable to other kinds of architecture, like the architecture of software. Using evocation of emotion in a definition also makes the definition subjective. If it doesn't evoke an emotion in the viewer it is not architecture to him? Anyway, I enjoyed this video and love to see more! 👍

Thank you! I can't take full credit for the lead builder definition, that would be on the Greeks. I included Place because I wanted the definition to be separate from things like software architecture. While related, I'm ok with there being two definitions for different applications. As for subjectivity, I think it is important to allow for flexibility between individuals. Architecture is close to art, and art is 100% subjective. Without subjectivity, 'architecture' isn't much different than 'building'. I'm glad you enjoyed it even if you disagreed with some of my points!

I know sprawling suburbs and commie blocks get called out in your final definition, but even if if it's lazy, half assed, pragmatic, and/or profit seeking,
I think they still count as architecture. They are still places, even if they are forgettable. They were created, even if they were copy-pasted. I still think they fit within the deep yet simple definition you present. Architecture can exist on a spectrum where bad architecture is the McMansion suburbs, and great architecture are wonders of the world.

You hit the nail on the head, that's exactly why I ended the video focusing on the lived experience over the construction itself!

That business about "place" at the end I totally disagree with. A port o potty is a place but not architecture. The classical definition of utility, form, and beauty is a philosopy that makes sense because it prevents a port o potty from being considered architecture. There is nothing precluding any architect from creating big blank walls out of concrete with tiny doors and very few windows but it doesn't mean they should. Buildings should look nice for the public good.

If you have a healthy mind, you can do Architecture. The laws of beauty and order are written in our minds as part of our being made in the image of God. Anyone who faces the necessity of building a shelter and seeks to answer the many questions that arise in the process is doing architecture. The architecture produced will reflect the person's intelligence, education, life experience and social and cultural background. In the best of worlds, one would not need to be an architect to do architecture. Some very good architects did not study architecture in educational settings.
At the time of the flood, architecture like any other art, embarked on the ark with the 8 survivors; like all art, architecture is part of the human essence.
