Ukraine and the Architecture of Power
The war in Ukraine has been one of the biggest stories over the past year, and its impact has been felt globally. The humanitarian crisis due to the constant fighting has left a big question in many people’s minds. What can we do to help? One of the groups most poised to be able to offer answers to this problem are architects. However, there is a long history that is holding back progress. This video tries to look at what may come of the war in terms of changes to the built environment, the field of architecture, and global culture as a whole.

Hiking The Narrows Top-Down [No Commentary]

The narrows is the most visited trail in Zion national Park, but not everyone gets to see this part of it. Trekking through 16 miles of canyon terrain, top down is the definitive way to experience the narrows.
Hiking Zion's Observation Point [No Commentary]
มุมมอง 202ปีที่แล้ว
Observation Point is one of the best views in Zion, rivaled only by Angel's Landing. The hike via East Mesa Trail is very easy, as long as you don't mind the extra drive and can find a place to park. I decided to extend the hike by traveling south to wards the East Rim Trail and linking back up to the South end of Ponderosa Ranch. This leg is a lot more challenging, and the trail becomes almost...
Hiking Grays Peak [No Commentary]
มุมมอง 692ปีที่แล้ว
Footage taken from my hike up Grays Peak on June 11, 2022. This was my first 14er, and is supposed to be one of the easier in the Rockies. The trail is fairly easy to follow until it starts up the last 1,000 ft, where it starts to branch off into many unofficial trails. I suggest keeping to the east-most trail, as it seemed more clear of snow and easier to hike. I took said trail coming down, a...
What is architecture?
มุมมอง 7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Architecture is one of the most ancient and public of arts, and it is so often the subject of discord between its practitioners and the public. The problem is, how do you tell what constitutes architecture? There are definitions, but they don’t account for every case. In our search for an answer, we will traverse millennia of history and theory. Further Reading: 121 Definitions of Architecture ...

Brutalism.

A look into Architecture’s most divisive style. To some, a source of beauty; to others, everything wrong with modern architectural movements. The truth, however, lies somewhere between. Corrections: Talnakh is located in Russia, not Serbia. (Credit to Patrola Snova for catching this) Fun Facts: -Despite the similarities, Louis Kahn disliked his work being called brutalist, likely due to ideolog...

Regarding the Zaha Stadium Deaths: I don't think it a factual statement. Architects are not responsible for managing workers; that responsibility falls to contractors, safety managers, and inspectors. While architects can voice their concerns and hope contractors take action, they are not legally or contractually responsible for worker safety. It's similar to a nurse advising a surgeon-although the nurse may offer input, the final responsibility lies with the surgeon, as the nurse is not specialized in that field. Would we hold the nurse accountable for an entire debacle just because she is close to the patient? Zaha Hadid's comments may not have been diplomatically phrased, but the truth remains: ensuring worker safety is not within her professional duties. This is a fundamental reality of the architecture profession. Architects typically do not act as contractors due to potential conflicts of interest. Contractors, whether general or subcontractors, bid on projects and must manage budgets to ensure profitability while winning bids against competitors. If an architect were also the contractor, their design might be compromised by budgetary concerns. Constructing a building is a complex endeavor involving many people over several years. The reason for involving numerous experts is that no single field can cover every detail. An architect possesses broad knowledge and creates a vision, but is not an expert in construction management. Hence, criticisms attributing worker deaths to architects are not factual. To say that they dont care about deaths is pushing it too far. Of course, one would be horrified and would want to prevent deaths. As a community, we should address this issue. Who can resolve the plight of workers? The contractors. Who sets the rules for contractors? The contractors' association, guided by existing laws approved by the government. If these laws are breached, it is the government's role to hold the responsible parties accountable. Architects would love to solve everything and change the world, but in the end, reality prevails. They can only aspire to intervene. There is no single superhero field-it takes a community of professionals to make a difference in this field. The world is complex, not just black and white. Aside from this, I enjoyed the rest. Thanks for this video. It was thought-provoking, I might add.

This game is perfect the way it is. I wouldn’t ever change a thing. Now, I would although like adding people as an OPTION, maybe something you can on in the game settings and then people will spawn in and respawn according to what you place and will act accordingly to what time it is. Maybe even just a market ability in the game would be awesome. I already have owned the VR copy, but it’s limited and I can’t wait to get my copy on PC tomorrow.

The main problem with brutalism is the trend it came with. Separation of work places and living places. Theyre a symbol of the hollowing out of the life of cities in favor of functionality.

If you have a healthy mind, you can do Architecture. The laws of beauty and order are written in our minds as part of our being made in the image of God. Anyone who faces the necessity of building a shelter and seeks to answer the many questions that arise in the process is doing architecture. The architecture produced will reflect the person's intelligence, education, life experience and social and cultural background. In the best of worlds, one would not need to be an architect to do architecture. Some very good architects did not study architecture in educational settings. At the time of the flood, architecture like any other art, embarked on the ark with the 8 survivors; like all art, architecture is part of the human essence.

It depends on HOW it’s used… if it’s used on a high-rise apartment building, it’s going to look bad as hell. The concrete will eventually lose its color and become more black from grime buildup.

I think the problem most people have is that are labelled as brutalist even building that are just utilitarian cubes of concrete without no artistic value, while most actual brutalist building are quite beautiful, also they usally degrade vary bad just cleaning the concrete to its original lighter color would make a great deal of difference for the beauty of the building

Minimalism is one thing; brutalism is another thing entirely. People often remark how beautiful, but sterile minimalist architecture is. But with brutalism they actually recoil. This style of architecture can be likened to a castle; all stone, often few windows, rough, angular shapes. Hardly what you would describe as welcoming. If that's what you're going for, fine. I can't imagine what kind of function it would serve. Bottom line; no one wants to even look at such an edifice, let alone enter one. Architects and city planners clearly weren't consulting the folks who were fated to live and work in these monstrosities. Shame on them all.

Brutalist architecture found in the Western world is ugly in my opinion, but in the Eastern world and specifically in the former USSR I find the architecture quite beautiful, the Soviets had a way of making something so simple yet filled with glory. The only reason so many despise the looks of old commie buildings is because not many of them have been maintained over the decades which leads to a depressing look, but if you can find color pictures of Soviet-built buildings in their prime then you'll see that Soviet cities were not only incredibly well-designed but also quite pleasant to look at.
