It's fun to watch the twins' rivalry, from the way they speak to each other to the way they fight, but this scene in particular made me see the twins relationship in a new light after watching it again. It's important to remember that Vergil discarded his humanity because he perceived it as weak. The resentment V feels toward Dante in this scene isn't just another display of their rivalry... It's a representation of one of Vergil's vulnerabilities. V, despite using all of what little strength he has to lift the devil sword Sparda, cannot bring himself to actually hurt Dante. Also can I just point ou that I absolutely disgust thebway griffon disrespects V. That's the only thing I hated about this game, the way Capcom made the Familiars.

My guess on this is that Dante upon awakening Sparda sword put a curse or some locking spell on it so that no one else could use it's power. The sword gives enormous power to anyone who holds it even if they're weak like Arkham and are unable to control it. A thing which can be seen when Sanctus asks the sword to give him more power, same with Trish she wields it but both of them don't get taken over by touching it which could have only happened if there was some locking spell on it
I don't think there is any spells or curse. It is said that only a descendent of Sparda can truly wield it and use its power. Nero used it for a brief moment in 4, Dante has been using it and even Vergil did use it, but the sword was in its dormant form, Force Edge.
