It's fun to watch the twins' rivalry, from the way they speak to each other to the way they fight, but this scene in particular made me see the twins relationship in a new light after watching it again. It's important to remember that Vergil discarded his humanity because he perceived it as weak. The resentment V feels toward Dante in this scene isn't just another display of their rivalry... It's a representation of one of Vergil's vulnerabilities. V, despite using all of what little strength he has to lift the devil sword Sparda, cannot bring himself to actually hurt Dante. This is Vergil riding out the wave of emotions (as opposed to being calm and collecting), riding and indulging in the wave of a life's worth of anger until he can't anymore. This is Vergil reliving the pains of losing his family, of feeling betrayed by his mother and Dante, of having to live a life of loneliness all. At. Once. He wants to kill Dante with the sword, wants to _blame him_ for all the tragedy he experienced since childhood, but he knows he can't, so he does the most human thing anyone could ever do and lets go of that anger... He relinquishes the sword to Dante.
This is why I love combing back to these scenes. Because this adds so much depth and characterization to Vergil that we’ve never seen in any other piece of media before

Spoiler alert 2! He has used it a couple times before against Dante, only in force edge form, not the full devil sword Sparda form. Also can I just point ou that I absolutely disgust thebway griffon disrespects V. Sure the point of the insult is to make comedy but the way he calls him kid, and the way V just let it slides, it's almost like he wants to do something but can't. That's the only thing I hated about this game, the way Capcom made the Familiars.

When V grabs Sparda's sword the little melody that sounds is the same one from DMC1 when Dante acquires his father's sword after defeating Nelo Angelo. It's a leitmotif but here sounds weaker and uncompleted because V it's actually weak to use the sword

My guess on this is that Dante upon awakening Sparda sword put a curse or some locking spell on it so that no one else could use it's power. The sword gives enormous power to anyone who holds it even if they're weak like Arkham and are unable to control it. A thing which can be seen when Sanctus asks the sword to give him more power, same with Trish she wields it but both of them don't get taken over by touching it which could have only happened if there was some locking spell on it
I don't think there is any spells or curse. It is said that only a descendent of Sparda can truly wield it and use its power. Nero used it for a brief moment in 4, Dante has been using it and even Vergil did use it, but the sword was in its dormant form, Force Edge.

This is the game where the sword from DMC 2 (Rebellion) and DMC 1 (Force Edge and Sparda) is gone for good and transformed into Devil Sword Dante. I will miss those swords very much.
V kinda looks cute. I kinda wish he could have stayed this way.

@@Sasskitten yeah lol and even if the reboot was god awful, my headcanon is dante had that short black hair as a kid because sparda pretended to be a human (like trish) and he had black hair like that. Doesn't make sense but neither does dante and vergil not having blonde hair like Eva :p
