Calories don't matter nearly as much as carbs. I eat about 2500 calories per day on a no-carb diet. My weight floats at about 150lbs. I used to eat about 2500 calories per day with no carb restriction. I was up to 210lbs before I cut the carbs. But I'm no scientist.
@@Hertz2laugh Yes carbs seem to trigger hunger in most people who have issue with storing to much fat. You have obviously found the key to comfortable weight stabilisation. I find for me protein and fat keep me going and fat loss is the side affect. Well done you.

Sugar and carbs were my #1 mistake. I consider all carbs "empty calories" because they simply don't make me feel full. When carbs were part of my diet, I was never satisfied which led to massive binges. Without carbs in my life the weight is effortlessly falling off me and I don't feel hungry doing it. For many people sugar and carbs are #1. I believe Frank Payne died in 2012 at age 49 because he never deleted carbs from his diet and ended up binging himself into a heart attack. I don't care who says it or what channel uses it as a click bait title, because I know deeply and intimately that sugar and carbs are #1.
Yeah I think keeping net carbs under 100 even if you're cycling as a regular dietary pattern is healthy. 300 should be a something you are aware you are doing, maybe you have a reason or it's a family member making your favorite food out of love (avoid it if it's like toxic non supportive cooking) if you have taken control of your health, 1 or 2 slices of pizza doesn't mean you go buy a whole pizza for that night. It's all about building that healthy relationship. Keto especially benefits from smaller cheats after 6 months of fairly strict.
@@XaqNautilus Genetics play a role and each individual is different. LDL can be healthy, but if the particle size isn't right, you're still at risk. It's far more complicated than just blaming carbs and sugar. Sugar, sure. But an awful lot of the world lives off of rice and/or beans and live well into old age and on far less quantity than Americans. Referencing this Payne person and your anecdotal experience doesn't make the rule. Excess of carbs, particularly processed, yeah, but because most people don't factor in everything else they're eating with those carbs (seed oils, for example).

Just goes to show that it wasn't purely the simple carbs cutting, that magically took the weight off. It was stopping the over-consuming of calorie rich carbs (e.g. cutting out an unwitting caloric surplus). So, bottom line you went from a caloric surplus WOE, to a caloric deficit WOE, just by cutting the simple carbs. Thus, the weight came off...'calories in-calories out!'

I'm on my own journey & since recently being introduced to him via a TH-cam interview, have found his information & advise super helpful!! I've only lost about 35 pounds so far; down from 220 to 185. So I still have a long way to go, being a female that's 5'2". But after watching this TH-cam interview & getting his fat loss cheat codes emailed to me, I'm sure I'll be in a much better position to lose the weight faster once I make the appropriate adjustments to my already high protein/low fat/ low sugar/ whole food diet!! I thoroughly enjoyed watching this interview!! So much so that I think I need to go out & buy his book. I feel it would be a wonderful read for someone working hard to grow their appreciation for good whole food, lose body fat while maintaining or better yet, building muscle, & and starting resistance training & core body work along with walking for the first time in their life.
It's true. I'm on a keto low carb diet for 3 years and had stalled at 172 lbs for last year. Made a few adjustments reducing and eliminating 3 foods that resulted in a reduction of 440 calories a day, Lost 7 lbs in 8 weeks and got to goal of 165 lbs. 12-14 % body fat. I'm 67 walk and workout everyday high rep, but not to failure 15 min twice a day and 90 min in gym on Sat. A.M.
A very interesting and practical conversation about losing weight. Just the idea that whole foods will fill you up about 300-500 calories more than processed food! A more painless way to lose about a pound a week! And then focusing on protein has practical uses for reducing hunger. And that's just in the first few minutes!
I do not count calories at all...lost 40 pounds in 5 months. Low carb, high fat. Avoid all added sugar and industrial processed food ALWAYS. Body will regulate itself. Just eat real, whole food. 😊
I have also lost a lot of weight on a Keto-vore diet. What they don't talk about is ketosis, and how the ketones keep your body from breaking down your muscles

Our muscles need it every single day, or they break down protein from themselves, and we can lose weight, some fat, some muscle, but we want to lose mostly fat, and no muscle, even adding on muscle, like a body recomposition. I listen to these pod cast and what I call lectures every day. I wanted to lose weight, initially, but I’ve never looked over weight. I recently realized for me, it’s been more about eating as healthy as possible, NOT to get cancer (mom died from metastatic breast cancer at 75 and dad has metastatic lung cancer and he’s the healthiest 79 year old the doctors have seen), not to get diabetes and NOW wanting to attempt to gain a really nice body recomposition. My moms doctor talked about how cancer thrives from sugar so I try not to eat sweets regularly. I just know I need to live to be here for my children and grandchildren. I am a 54 year old black female and I weigh 141, ply or minus a couple pounds but what I eat and the way I eat is important. It’s funny how I don’t really lose weight with what I do, but I can encourage people to do what I do and they lose 10 pounds in a month. I always wonder what I’m doing wrong…this was the first pod cast that talked about the less fat you have the longer it takes to lose it and why. I already figured that but hearing it on Dhru’s podcast has given me motivation to stay the course and encourage myself to continue to eat healthy. I am just starting to lift again so I hope to see results from that pretty soon. My target area is weird…my under arm fat, which a lot of what I read says can lead to breast cancer so it has become my new focus. Thank you all for educating us by practicing what you teach.

Very interesting Podcast. In my case, carbs only increase my hunger. Im on a very low carb diet for 7 months now, because i wanted to test it. I´ve tried many different diets for my whole life and nothing was sustainable for me in a long run. My body responds very good for a high fat low carb and mid protein diet. Im extremely satiated for hours if im eating many fat and nearly no carbs. I´m tracking every day to learn how my body responds to my eating habit. im 178cm tall and lost 23kg from nearly 89kg. and ive learned, that every time , im going over the 70-90g carb count, my body craves for even more food. The cravings are so high, i cant resist to eat more and more.

Calorie counting works for me. By adding more protein, I eat less carbs and fat food and weight comes down eventually. I walk daily about 10000 steps and 15 min toning exercises. That’s my formula. Basic IF 14/10 when I feel like it.
@@sanjam11 my initial weight was 68kg now I’m at 61kg, I was size 12/14, now I’m 8/10. I feel more toned. My daily calories without exercise is 1400 . I eat 80% healthy and 20% unhealthy, I vary my IF according to fast like a girl. I have done an occasional 20hr fast.
I gained weight doing keto. My calorie intake definitely went up when I added all of the extra fats and protein. I was eating a lot of raw, walnuts, raw almonds, extra-virgin, olive oil, avocados, MCT, oil, etc. that is really a lot of calories. And I decreased the melon and papaya, and the fruit that were filling me up without all the extra fat and calories. Also prolonging my fast and fasting more often decreased my motivation or strength or willingness to go on long runs so my calorie expenditure went down while my calorie intake was up. MCT oil was unnecessary 150 extra calories a day I certainly did not need!
@@HH-gv8mx since you are a beginner, you need to get used to eating more animal fat. once you have more animal fat. you feet satiated. once satiated you will feel like not eating. you can do fasting easily. its better you do carnivore version of Keto. probably many carbs are comming from those nuts and salads
Oh yea I easily eat a 1lb bag of almonds every week. I haven’t eaten meat in a really long time. I mostly eat fish, scallops, shrimp egg whites, and sometimes chicken.@@pkp2023
OMG! So true about protein. Yesterday I ate 80-90% of my food from protein and was able to stay at my maintenance 1200 kcalories, and I was so stuffed. I couldn't achieve it through keto due to high caloric density of fats...
@amazingautumn12 I forgot to mention pea soup, bean soup. I love nuts and avocado, but have to keep them to minimum. Plus, I eat protein bars sometimes.
If you drink your calories (even protein smoothies) you will be more hungry than if you chew normal foods that are high protein. Chewing nuts is better than eating nut butters, you will feel more full and eat fewer calories eating nuts as opposed to the same calories in the same nut butter. Chicken breast and a side salad will keep you more full than the same amount of protein via a smoothie.
Opinion Feeling hungry is the stomach way of starting to cleanse itself. Do not treat the body as a processing plant; break from meals let’s your gut get out what is constantly trying to digest. True what you eat is key (Quality).
This is essentially the eat less move more reduce fat paradigm that has been the norm for the past few decades and we have seen the metabolic disorders exponentially rise. It doesn’t work long term and the whole 3500 calories equals a pound of fat loss theory doesn’t math when talking about the human system. There are way more variables and the law of thermodynamics doesn’t apply to an open system like the body. Sorry guy but repackaging the same old as new isn’t fooling anyone. I hope.
I always ate healthy but was eating too much of healthy but calorie dense foods. For example chia seeds,avocado , nut butters and I ate a lot of mango . Since I cut these foods down in my diet I have seen a huge change and I have lost weight since I started tracking my protein and carbs and fiber. So glad you touched on this. I am working toward becoming skinny lean now
The problem I have with calories-in-calories-out is that it fails to recognize that calories out is not an independent variable. Eat more calories, and you will burn more calories doing the same activity. Yes, physics gives us a _minimum_ possible caloric burn for each footstep, each heartbeat, each object of weight X lifted to height Y, but in practice people are never close to that anyway. I'm tired of hearing this failed, outdated crap about "oh, the problem is diets are hard to stick to and so you gain the weight back." No. When I diet, I can cut my calories _in half_ and lose _zero_ weight _in the short term._ "But how is that possible? Physics defines the blah blah..." It's actually very simple. When I cut my calories in half and do the same amount of activity, my body temperature drops, my brain doesn't work as well, and less surplus energy is allocated to immune function and tissue repair. Turns out that millions of years of evolution didn't settle on "temporary reduction in calories? Die immediately of starvation!" Who'd have thought. In my personal experience, neither increasing or decreasing my caloric intake has made any difference whatsoever to my body weight; it changes my quality of life instead. On more calories I feel better, have more energy, think more clearly, and on fewer calories I get sick more often, have brain fog, and feel cold all the time. No temporary weight loss / gain that normalizes after the diet failed. None of this mythology ever comes true. My weight doesn't change by one pound. But earlier this year I changed calorie type and eating time to de-emphasize carbohydrates and go for at least 8 waking hours a day without food, and lost 19 pounds in 7 weeks with no change in calories in or exercise habits.
Amazing! I will add that counting calories everyday made me obsessive and all I would see we're numbers, I was getting so tired of it. Counting calories made me rather eat 2 slices of pizza than nutritious food because it still fit the calorie limit. Guess where that went, I would lose weight temporarily but gain it back quickly. And I felt awful all the time. Now I'm eating intuitively but making an effort to eat healthy, drink plenty of water, I go lower carb generally but I introduce some portions of carbs the week before my period, I feel great! Also combined with 24-36 hour water fasts from time to time (where I don't even feel hungry, I feel hungrier on the days i eat - crazy) and the weight finally started to get off. And when I start eating again I still burn faster than I used to. It's crazy, but my bets go on that "a calorie is a calorie" or "calories in calories out" are definitely flawed and the only thing that is true is to have some "caloric" modesty when eating (don't expect to use 500 grams of oil or to eat sweets all days without gaining weight) but never compare 100 calories of broccoli to 100 calories of Oreo and say they have the same effect on the body long term either Congratulations on your results!🎉 Enjoy
What's your take on what hours not to eat? I hate food until about 3pm but then I'll eat right on sleep time, which I guess is not good as my body is digesting And not resting... It's so hard for me to eat in the morning
@user-ww7ww2ze1w I’m a trainer, so I’ll answer your question quickly - photos of what they eat in one day wouldn’t work for you because as a trainer, today I may have eggs for breakfast and tomorrow I might have a protein shake and the next day I might fast. So a picture of one day would not work. If you need to lose weight, whether you’re male or female, eat 30 g of protein first at the beginning of every meal, and then if you’re still hungry, you can eat a little more of any healthy foods. Usually you won’t be very hungry after 30 g of protein so you won’t eat much more. Try that to start, and then message me back after you’ve done it for a week and tell me how you’re doing.
There is an interview with Dr. Chaffee and a guy who has eating only meat for like 40 years. He talked about a week where he at 6500 calories a day and still lost 10 pounds. Kind of blows that theory out of the water. Lol
Yeah saw that too. I was carnivore started end of April until last week lost 14 lbs but now I'm kinda ketavore going back to carnivore because nothing else makes sense at all. I never counted any cals at all. Ken Berry rocks

Actually - losing only fat on any diet, including a protein forward diet AND resistance training along with the ideal high protein, caloric deficit diet - most ppl (unless they are unusual 'gainers' (easily add muscle to their body mass) - most of us will experience a 25% loss of lean body tissue (muscle tissue), along with the fat loss. This is just a fact of 'weightloss.' This is study supported data!...per Dr. Donald Layman, Phd. (& other health experts, scientists).
Yes, an insulin resistant metabolism will have a higher fat genesis & fat storage, than a metabolism with optimal insulin processing. Pretty sure that this is the result of the circulating serum insulin and glucose, that's not entering insulin resistant lean tissue (muscle tissue), but instead (bc it CAN enter fat cells), gets stored as excess fat in the liver and in the body's fat cells. Additionally, glycogen (glucose, 'sugar') is stored - and burned- for energy in muscle tissue. But burning glucose for energy that's stored in fat tissue?... um - not so much!
That’s the opposite of me. I was always very lean and could pretty much eat a lot of food and I eat really late at night and not gain weight. But I was also running most days of the week. Now that I have stopped running and increased my fasting window and incorporated keto, which is a lot of extra fats and protein, which means a lot of extra calories, I’m in a calorie overload and I’m putting on weight. Even though I just eat avocados and raw walnuts, raw almonds, MCT, oil, olive oil, salmon…. It’s a lot of extra added calories, and I’ve gained weight.

I have had trouble gaining weight my entire life now in my 60s I need some weight.... muscles I can pick up more than half my weight... but I don't see no muscles .. I just opened a social media on another platform. And saw someone shaking the poster about McDonalds. The name was familiar so I clicked on it and it was a woman who lives in the next street over. I’ve seen her in her family McDonald’s numerous times. But there she was shaming the poster.
I ate extremely healthy foods for decades and gained a lot of weight. I ended up having to loose 56lbs, which I've kept off for 6 years. I used and still use my digital food scale everyday. I photograph the scale while I'm cooking and use the photos to log my food and recipes into Chronometer app. It's frustrating when the advice is, cut out high fructose corn syrup, hydrogonated fats and junk food to loose weight when none has crossed my lips. I used to say, my fat is olive oil, avocado fat!
I disagree about protein being the most satiating.. fat feeds our bodies way more without the BS spike. Of couse, that only works if you're fat adapted i think.
As a personal trainer working with overweight clients and living with overweight family members I find that they do not think about their weight all the time most of the time they're in denial it's just like when you know that you drink too much alcohol or smoke too much you justify your actions and don't realize that you were overconsuming because of habit and addictive tendencies.
I thought when he quoted the first law of thermo dynamics which relates to the internal energy of an isolated system being constant and related it to an open and complex system such as the human body he lost all respect as a guy who knew science. It went downhill after as he further conflates the human body as a furnace or an engine rather than a biochemical organic machine.
I have heard other "experts" saying that regardless how much protein you eat, your body will only take what it needs, so increasing your protein only ends up costing you money
The day I met my PCP...one of the first things I told her was that I EXPECT her to help me monitor my weight. That I WANT her to mention it if I gain. We are a team, and I do not want to be overweight, I need MY DOCTOR to discuss options with me. She may not know much about nutrition, but she can tell if her patient is fat😍
I found this helpful. I am a 56 year old woman trying to lose fat and regain muscle following a recovery from a long illness. I knew about the protein requirement and I do track calories, I started resistance training. I try to get on my elliptical as many days as I can. This info is helping to twerk what I am doing.
@brooklyngal66 Resistance training, and elliptical (cardio), are two very different types of exercise. One (resistance training) is hypertrophic (anabolic, i.e. muscle building). The other, (elliptical) is cardio - good for heart health. But, with the absence of hyperbolic resistance exercises, Cardio (elliptical) can be catabolic (breaking down muscle tissue)...when done to the exclusion of hyperbolic, strength training exercises. (I kinda inferred from your post that you view your elliptical (cardio), as resistance exercise?). ...which you did say you've started, but then mentioned the frequent elliptical use. Sorry, if I got that wrong🙄 Also, big congrats to you for your initiative to improve your health/strength after your illness recovery. Just recovering from illness is quite the accomplishment😃 We need all the help we can get at our age. So, good for you...and just keep on keeping on!👍💪

I'm fat and sometimes sense I am thin. I don't totally understand how if I'm over weight, why would I need to eat until I lost weight to what I should be. Why am I hungry if I already ate too much?
I never count calories and I do high fat and only good carbs that feed my gut biome while eating within a window. It's the only thing that works for me. I am a woman though and a lot of his advice might work for men. I dated a professional body builder once and he did not carb it up. When he did, it increased his muscle glycogen stores and made his muscles puff up and look more soft than chiseled.
This guy was good I guess. Just these old models don’t work. Less than 3% of people are successful on low calorie strategies Of course thermo dynamics is important. The thing is most people are walking around with insulin resistance and broken metabolisms. This guys journey was from fit to more lean. Restricting calories. That’s not really a journey. If anyone out there is real fat intermittent fasting is the key. Prioritize protein and cut carbs out until your fat adapted. Cutting carbs out is temporary until you’re lean. Once you get leaner be sure your protein needs are met and take diet breaks. Def lift weights. In no time you’ll be fit as a fiddle.
There’s no need to cut calories if you choose your calories wisely healthy instead of destructive and get a rebounder when you’re bored and choose that instead of eating when you’re not hungry

Thank you - great interview! I agree with Max... most people have no clue as to how many calories they're consuming - eating healthy & clean, or crap! Using a scale & tracking is beyond illuminating and I'm addicted to it (in a good way ;) ). So many people get a salad (home or out) and then pile on avocado, olive oil (dressing), then maybe tuna or chicken salad with mayo, etc.... as healthy as avocados & good quality olive oil are, as Max pointed out, extremely calorie-dense and boy, do those calories add up. For what it's worth, I use very little oil (other than sauteeing things once in a while) - I try to opt for foods that give the food the creaminess feel I'm looking for and that also contain a whopping amount of fiber & potassium as well as other nutrients that oils don't have. I use the all-mighty avocado a lot!! Mix it into a salad in lieu of oil/dressing, add some vinegar, etc and it's as though you've got a rich, creamy dressing with so many more nutrients... mush it into a potato (sweet or reg) in lieu of butter and it's scrumptious (with way more nutrients)... we already know it's as delicious as butter because people love avocado toast most have already discovered it's as good (if not better) than buttered bread. I also prefer nuts & nut butters over coconut oil or other fats because they package that fat with fiber & so many more nutrients than extracted, isolated fats.
@jamescalifornia2964 No...fat is calorically dense about 100 Kcals in 1 tblsp. (9 calories/gram). It's the regular consumption of A caloric SURPLUS that adds body fat. And that surplus can be from any macro - protein, fat, or carbs.
I feel sick without enough protein. I aim for a pound of meat a day minimum and that has provided me with the best wellbeing. Anything less and I feel marginal.
Agreed, I ate at McDonald’s for over three weeks and gain up to six pounds over that time frame. Big mistake, so I changed up my fast food and started eating at BK, counted my calories and ending up gaining five more pounds….so yes calories matter. Thank you ☺️

I goto fogo for lunch $43 with tip and tax $55 total. I’ll get 3-5 lb of lamb and beef no sides!, like 10 different cuts, then I eat the salad bar after, it’s fucken glorious. I forgot to mention, I do a 24-36 hour fast before I go lol. They lose on me.
Please stop bringing the laws of thermodynamics into this... It's not about that. The process of building and burning body fat is a matter of biochemistry not physics. Nothing dictates that matter needs to be converted into different matter. The easiest way to get rid of the energy in matter would be to burn it off as heat. That's not what's happening because the body is smart so it initiates a complicated process driven by hormones to somehow be able to put that energy content away for later use.
Using weighing scale for your food macro is just ridiculous. For lay people like me, that’s just crazy. Hell no way I’m going to use scale for my foods.
wrong, calories do matter but they dont. Burning calories is nonsense but you should not overeat. Calories are not suitable. But if you overeat you gain weight. It matters WHAT you eat. Do the research, calories are not the right way to measure weight. Also calorie deficits are unsustainable. Get smarter.

A digital scale is crucial to insure meeting 50 gm. protein, say, at breakfast. I eat salmon and always weigh it. The frozen portion varies and I sometimes add 1, 2 or 3 eggs to meet my 50 gm. goal. High protein is really only viable for blood type 0. Other types should carefully follow protein guidelines as laid out in Eat Right For Your Type - Revised Edition by Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo.

Ive list 10inches off of my waist in less than a year. I eat more calories than i used to and near zero carbs. I only walk for exercise
@@did3366 Eating carnivore supersedes counting calories and the noise of dieting.
Sugar and carbs were my #1 mistake. I consider all carbs "empty calories" because they simply don't make me feel full. When carbs were part of my diet, I was never satisfied which led to massive binges. Without carbs in my life the weight is effortlessly falling off me and I don't feel hungry doing it.
For many people sugar and carbs are #1. I believe Frank Payne died in 2012 at age 49 because he never deleted carbs from his diet and ended up binging himself into a heart attack.
I don't care who says it or what channel uses it as a click bait title, because I know deeply and intimately that sugar and carbs are #1.
Yeah I think keeping net carbs under 100 even if you're cycling as a regular dietary pattern is healthy. 300 should be a something you are aware you are doing, maybe you have a reason or it's a family member making your favorite food out of love (avoid it if it's like toxic non supportive cooking) if you have taken control of your health, 1 or 2 slices of pizza doesn't mean you go buy a whole pizza for that night. It's all about building that healthy relationship. Keto especially benefits from smaller cheats after 6 months of fairly strict.

It's far more complicated than just blaming carbs and sugar. Sugar, sure. But an awful lot of the world lives off of rice and/or beans and live well into old age and on far less quantity than Americans. Referencing this Payne person and your anecdotal experience doesn't make the rule. Excess of carbs, particularly processed, yeah, but because most people don't factor in everything else they're eating with those carbs (seed oils, for example).

Just goes to show that it wasn't purely the simple carbs cutting, that magically took the weight off. It was stopping the over-consuming of calorie rich carbs (e.g. cutting out an unwitting caloric surplus).
So, bottom line you went from a caloric surplus WOE, to a caloric deficit WOE, just by cutting the simple carbs.
Thus, the weight came off...'calories in-calories out!'

B) I couldn't agree with you more about Max!! I'm on my own journey & since recently being introduced to him via a TH-cam interview, have found his information & advise super helpful!! I've only lost about 35 pounds so far; down from 220 to 185. So I still have a long way to go, being a female that's 5'2". But after watching this TH-cam interview & getting his fat loss cheat codes emailed to me, I'm sure I'll be in a much better position to lose the weight faster once I make the appropriate adjustments to my already high protein/low fat/ low sugar/ whole food diet!! It's true. I'm on a keto low carb diet for 3 years and had stalled at 172 lbs for last year. Made a few
adjustments reducing and eliminating 3 foods that resulted in a reduction of 440 calories
a day, Lost 7 lbs in 8 weeks and got to goal of 165 lbs. 12-14 % body fat. I'm 67 walk
and workout everyday high rep, but not to failure 15 min twice a day and 90 min in gym on Sat. A.M.

A very interesting and practical conversation about losing weight. Just the idea that whole foods will fill you up about 300-500 calories more than processed food! A more painless way to lose about a pound a week!

I do not count calories at all...lost 40 pounds in 5 months. Low carb, high fat. Avoid all added sugar and industrial processed food ALWAYS. Body will regulate itself. Just eat real, whole food. 😊

Our muscles need it every single day, or they break down protein from themselves, and we can lose weight, some fat, some muscle, but we want to lose mostly fat, and no muscle, even adding on muscle, like a body recomposition. I listen to these pod cast and what I call lectures every day. I wanted to lose weight, initially, but I’ve never looked over weight. I recently realized for me, it’s been more about eating as healthy as possible, NOT to get cancer (mom died from metastatic breast cancer at 75 and dad has metastatic lung cancer and he’s the healthiest 79 year old the doctors have seen), not to get diabetes and NOW wanting to attempt to gain a really nice body recomposition. My moms doctor talked about how cancer thrives from sugar so I try not to eat sweets regularly. I just know I need to live to be here for my children and grandchildren. I am a 54 year old black female and I weigh 141, ply or minus a couple pounds but what I eat and the way I eat is important. It’s funny how I don’t really lose weight with what I do, but I can encourage people to do what I do and they lose 10 pounds in a month. I always wonder what I’m doing wrong…this was the first pod cast that talked about the less fat you have the longer it takes to lose it and why. I already figured that but hearing it on Dhru’s podcast has given me motivation to stay the course and encourage myself to continue to eat healthy. I am just starting to lift again so I hope to see results from that pretty soon. My target area is weird…my under arm fat, which a lot of what I read says can lead to breast cancer so it has become my new focus. Thank you all for educating us by practicing what you teach.

I´ve tried many different diets for my whole life and nothing was sustainable for me in a long run.
My body responds very good for a high fat low carb and mid protein diet.
Im extremely satiated for hours if im eating many fat and nearly no carbs.
I´m tracking every day to learn how my body responds to my eating habit.

and ive learned, that every time , im going over the 70-90g carb count, my body craves for even more food.
The cravings are so high, i cant resist to eat more and more.

Calorie counting works for me. By adding more protein, I eat less carbs and fat food and weight comes down eventually. I walk daily about 10000 steps and 15 min toning exercises. That’s my formula. Basic IF 14/10 when I feel like it.

@@sanjam11 my initial weight was 68kg now I’m at 61kg, I was size 12/14, now I’m 8/10. I feel more toned. My daily calories without exercise is 1400 . I eat 80% healthy and 20% unhealthy, I vary my IF according to fast like a girl. I have done an occasional 20hr fast.
Try the Carnivore diet. You’ll lose weight without the stress of counting calories.
carbs and sugar increase my weight period.
I gained weight doing keto. My calorie intake definitely went up when I added all of the extra fats and protein. I was eating a lot of raw, walnuts, raw almonds, extra-virgin, olive oil, avocados, MCT, oil, etc. that is really a lot of calories. And I decreased the melon and papaya, and the fruit that were filling me up without all the extra fat and calories. Also prolonging my fast and fasting more often decreased my motivation or strength or willingness to go on long runs so my calorie expenditure went down while my calorie intake was up.
MCT oil was unnecessary 150 extra calories a day I certainly did not need!

OMG! So true about protein. Yesterday I ate 80-90% of my food from protein and was able to stay at my maintenance 1200 kcalories, and I was so stuffed. I couldn't achieve it through keto due to high caloric density of fats...

@amazingautumn12 I forgot to mention pea soup, bean soup. I love nuts and avocado, but have to keep them to minimum. Plus, I eat protein bars sometimes.
If you drink your calories (even protein smoothies) you will be more hungry than if you chew normal foods that are high protein.
Chewing nuts is better than eating nut butters, you will feel more full and eat fewer calories eating nuts as opposed to the same calories in the same nut butter.
Chicken breast and a side salad will keep you more full than the same amount of protein via a smoothie.

Feeling hungry is the stomach way of starting to cleanse itself. Do not treat the body as a processing plant; break from meals let’s your gut get out what is constantly trying to digest. True what you eat is key (Quality).
This is essentially the eat less move more reduce fat paradigm that has been the norm for the past few decades and we have seen the metabolic disorders exponentially rise. It doesn’t work long term and the whole 3500 calories equals a pound of fat loss theory doesn’t math when talking about the human system. There are way more variables and the law of thermodynamics doesn’t apply to an open system like the body. Sorry guy but repackaging the same old as new isn’t fooling anyone. I hope.

I always ate healthy but was eating too much of healthy but calorie dense foods. For example chia seeds,avocado , nut butters and I ate a lot of mango . Since I cut these foods down in my diet I have seen a huge change and I have lost weight since I started tracking my protein and carbs and fiber. So glad you touched on this. I am working toward becoming skinny lean now
The problem I have with calories-in-calories-out is that it fails to recognize that calories out is not an independent variable. Eat more calories, and you will burn more calories doing the same activity. Yes, physics gives us a _minimum_ possible caloric burn for each footstep, each heartbeat, each object of weight X lifted to height Y, but in practice people are never close to that anyway. I'm tired of hearing this failed, outdated crap about "oh, the problem is diets are hard to stick to and so you gain the weight back." No. When I diet, I can cut my calories _in half_ and lose _zero_ weight _in the short term._ "But how is that possible? Physics defines the blah blah..." It's actually very simple. When I cut my calories in half and do the same amount of activity, my body temperature drops, my brain doesn't work as well, and less surplus energy is allocated to immune function and tissue repair. Turns out that millions of years of evolution didn't settle on "temporary reduction in calories? Die immediately of starvation!" Who'd have thought. In my personal experience, neither increasing or decreasing my caloric intake has made any difference whatsoever to my body weight; it changes my quality of life instead. On more calories I feel better, have more energy, think more clearly, and on fewer calories I get sick more often, have brain fog, and feel cold all the time. No temporary weight loss / gain that normalizes after the diet failed. None of this mythology ever comes true. My weight doesn't change by one pound. But earlier this year I changed calorie type and eating time to de-emphasize carbohydrates and go for at least 8 waking hours a day without food, and lost 19 pounds in 7 weeks with no change in calories in or exercise habits.
Amazing! I will add that counting calories everyday made me obsessive and all I would see we're numbers, I was getting so tired of it. Counting calories made me rather eat 2 slices of pizza than nutritious food because it still fit the calorie limit. Guess where that went, I would lose weight temporarily but gain it back quickly. And I felt awful all the time.
Now I'm eating intuitively but making an effort to eat healthy, drink plenty of water, I go lower carb generally but I introduce some portions of carbs the week before my period, I feel great! Also combined with 24-36 hour water fasts from time to time (where I don't even feel hungry, I feel hungrier on the days i eat - crazy) and the weight finally started to get off. And when I start eating again I still burn faster than I used to.
It's crazy, but my bets go on that "a calorie is a calorie" or "calories in calories out" are definitely flawed and the only thing that is true is to have some "caloric" modesty when eating (don't expect to use 500 grams of oil or to eat sweets all days without gaining weight) but never compare 100 calories of broccoli to 100 calories of Oreo and say they have the same effect on the body long term either

@user-ww7ww2ze1w I’m a trainer, so I’ll answer your question quickly - photos of what they eat in one day wouldn’t work for you because as a trainer, today I may have eggs for breakfast and tomorrow I might have a protein shake and the next day I might fast. So a picture of one day would not work. If you need to lose weight, whether you’re male or female, eat 30 g of protein first at the beginning of every meal, and then if you’re still hungry, you can eat a little more of any healthy foods. Usually you won’t be very hungry after 30 g of protein so you won’t eat much more. Try that to start, and then message me back after you’ve done it for a week and tell me how you’re doing.

Good interview, calories do matter for weight gain or loss but food partitioning is more important for health.
Actually - losing only fat on any diet, including a protein forward diet AND resistance training along with the ideal high protein, caloric deficit diet - most ppl (unless they are unusual 'gainers' (easily add muscle to their body mass) - most of us will experience a 25% loss of lean body tissue (muscle tissue), along with the fat loss.
This is just a fact of 'weightloss.'

That is a carbohydrate issue. If you are insulin resistance then carbs are a no go. Regain your insulin sensitivity and you can bring moderation back.
Yes, an insulin resistant metabolism will have a higher fat genesis & fat storage, than a metabolism with optimal insulin processing.
Pretty sure that this is the result of the circulating serum insulin and glucose, that's not entering insulin resistant lean tissue (muscle tissue), but instead (bc it CAN enter fat cells), gets stored as excess fat in the liver and in the body's fat cells.
Additionally, glycogen (glucose, 'sugar') is stored - and burned- for energy in muscle tissue. But burning glucose for energy that's stored in fat tissue?... um - not so much!
I eat more calories now than I ever have but far fewer carbs and im losing weight
That’s the opposite of me. I was always very lean and could pretty much eat a lot of food and I eat really late at night and not gain weight. But I was also running most days of the week. Now that I have stopped running and increased my fasting window and incorporated keto, which is a lot of extra fats and protein, which means a lot of extra calories, I’m in a calorie overload and I’m putting on weight. Even though I just eat avocados and raw walnuts, raw almonds, MCT, oil, olive oil, salmon…. It’s a lot of extra added calories, and I’ve gained weight.
I am finally fat adapted. Those foods and junk are no longer tempting to me and I e been tested multiple times.
I still eat dark chocolate 🍫 everyday. Atleast 70-100% cacao. High in iron and antioxidants

I just opened a social media on another platform. And saw someone shaking the poster about McDonalds. The name was familiar so I clicked on it and it was a woman who lives in the next street over. I’ve seen her in her family McDonald’s numerous times. But there she was shaming the poster.
I ate extremely healthy foods for decades and gained a lot of weight. I ended up having to loose 56lbs, which I've kept off for 6 years. I used and still use my digital food scale everyday. I photograph the scale while I'm cooking and use the photos to log my food and recipes into Chronometer app.
It's frustrating when the advice is, cut out high fructose corn syrup, hydrogonated fats and junk food to loose weight when none has crossed my lips.
I used to say, my fat is olive oil, avocado fat!

I disagree about protein being the most satiating.. fat feeds our bodies way more without the BS spike. Of couse, that only works if you're fat adapted i think.
As a personal trainer working with overweight clients and living with overweight family members I find that they do not think about their weight all the time most of the time they're in denial it's just like when you know that you drink too much alcohol or smoke too much you justify your actions and don't realize that you were overconsuming because of habit and addictive tendencies.

I thought when he quoted the first law of thermo dynamics which relates to the internal energy of an isolated system being constant and related it to an open and complex system such as the human body he lost all respect as a guy who knew science. It went downhill after as he further conflates the human body as a furnace or an engine rather than a biochemical organic machine.
I have heard other "experts" saying that regardless how much protein you eat, your body will only take what it needs, so increasing your protein only ends up costing you money

I knew about the protein requirement and I do track calories, I started resistance training. I try to get on my elliptical as many days as I can.

Resistance training, and elliptical (cardio), are two very different types of exercise.
One (resistance training) is hypertrophic (anabolic, i.e. muscle building).
The other, (elliptical) is cardio - good for heart health.
But, with the absence of hyperbolic resistance exercises, Cardio (elliptical) can be catabolic (breaking down muscle tissue)...when done to the exclusion of hyperbolic, strength training exercises.
(I kinda inferred from your post that you view your elliptical (cardio), as resistance exercise?).
...which you did say you've started, but then mentioned the frequent elliptical use.

I'm fat and sometimes sense I am thin. I don't totally understand how if I'm over weight, why would I need to eat until I lost weight to what I should be. Why am I hungry if I already ate too much?

Me too, I’ve been going overboard on olive oil.
I never count calories and I do high fat and only good carbs that feed my gut biome while eating within a window. It's the only thing that works for me. I am a woman though and a lot of his advice might work for men. I dated a professional body builder once and he did not carb it up. When he did, it increased his muscle glycogen stores and made his muscles puff up and look more soft than chiseled.
This guy was good I guess. Just these old models don’t work. Less than 3% of people are successful on low calorie strategies
Of course thermo dynamics is important. The thing is most people are walking around with insulin resistance and broken metabolisms. This guys journey was from fit to more lean. Restricting calories. That’s not really a journey.
If anyone out there is real fat intermittent fasting is the key. Prioritize protein and cut carbs out until your fat adapted. Cutting carbs out is temporary until you’re lean. Once you get leaner be sure your protein needs are met and take diet breaks. Def lift weights.
In no time you’ll be fit as a fiddle.
There’s no need to cut calories if you choose your calories wisely healthy instead of destructive and get a rebounder when you’re bored and choose that instead of eating when you’re not hungry

Love this podcast.. and that segment on protein.. if I am running late and I cut off my meals at 6pm I will go thru McDonalds for the quarter pounder beef patties.. and I savor every bite because they are so good.. and full by the time I get home.. ;) glad my decision was confirmed when in a pinch. ;)

Thank you - great interview! I agree with Max... most people have no clue as to how many calories they're consuming - eating healthy & clean, or crap! Using a scale & tracking is beyond illuminating and I'm addicted to it (in a good way ;) ). So many people get a salad (home or out) and then pile on avocado, olive oil (dressing), then maybe tuna or chicken salad with mayo, etc.... as healthy as avocados & good quality olive oil are, as Max pointed out, extremely calorie-dense and boy, do those calories add up. For what it's worth, I use very little oil (other than sauteeing things once in a while) - I try to opt for foods that give the food the creaminess feel I'm looking for and that also contain a whopping amount of fiber & potassium as well as other nutrients that oils don't have. I use the all-mighty avocado a lot!! Mix it into a salad in lieu of oil/dressing, add some vinegar, etc and it's as though you've got a rich, creamy dressing with so many more nutrients... mush it into a potato (sweet or reg) in lieu of butter and it's scrumptious (with way more nutrients)... we already know it's as delicious as butter because people love avocado toast most have already discovered it's as good (if not better) than buttered bread. I also prefer nuts & nut butters over coconut oil or other fats because they package that fat with fiber & so many more nutrients than extracted, isolated fats.

I feel sick without enough protein. I aim for a pound of meat a day minimum and that has provided me with the best wellbeing. Anything less and I feel marginal.

Agreed, I ate at McDonald’s for over three weeks and gain up to six pounds over that time frame. Big mistake, so I changed up my fast food and started eating at BK, counted my calories and ending up gaining five more pounds….so yes calories matter. Thank you ☺️

I goto fogo for lunch $43 with tip and tax $55 total. I’ll get 3-5 lb of lamb and beef no sides!, like 10 different cuts, then I eat the salad bar after, it’s fucken glorious. I forgot to mention, I do a 24-36 hour fast before I go lol. They lose on me.
It sounds to me like you shrink your stomach and then you stretch it out with lots of food. I can’t see how that’s good for the stomach.
Please stop bringing the laws of thermodynamics into this... It's not about that. The process of building and burning body fat is a matter of biochemistry not physics.
Nothing dictates that matter needs to be converted into different matter. The easiest way to get rid of the energy in matter would be to burn it off as heat. That's not what's happening because the body is smart so it initiates a complicated process driven by hormones to somehow be able to put that energy content away for later use.
Using weighing scale for your food macro is just ridiculous. For lay people like me, that’s just crazy. Hell no way I’m going to use scale for my foods.

A digital scale is crucial to insure meeting 50 gm. protein, say, at breakfast. I eat salmon and always weigh it. The frozen portion varies and I sometimes add 1, 2 or 3 eggs to meet my 50 gm. goal.
High protein is really only viable for blood type 0. Other types should carefully follow protein guidelines as laid out in Eat Right For Your Type - Revised Edition by Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo.
