I am literally crying watching this I have gotten so many answers in the fist half hour watching this video than I have had in my life! I have been overweight and overwhelmed since I was a little girl! I’m now 34 and have been challenged with some of these issues. You can’t fight an enemy until you know what you are up against. Thank you Dr.Ben!🙌🏽
Shawnee if you go on a keto diet for two weeks then go on a five day fast then back to keto you'll be amazed how healthy you'll be Worked for me like magic ! No more pre diabetes and I lost a ton of weight 😁
@@jasminejones9937 yes mixing keto with fasting is awesome!! I do rolling 48 eating once a day carnivore, fish, chicken, beef, and lettuce. Zero carbs and the weight loss is magic!
I wish you luck on your journey. Don't underestimate the power of carbohydrate addiction and the withdrawals and relapses of living a lower carb/insulin lifestyle. Hard for me to quit carbs.
Oh my gosh! My husband was diagnosed with colorectal cancer AND celiac disease at the same time. We started the GF diet...just last month he had a heart attack and had 1 Stent and 2 bypasses done! In our ignorance we bought into the GF food idea not realizing his insulin was being spiked constantly!! I need to get him on my keto diet. Pray for me, this is gonna be tough!
Will pray for you both. Just keep showing the facts like these and tell him that his health will affect your joy s well and help you both spend more joyful years together
I will pray 🙏🏻 Books to read are Treasures of Healthy Living by Annette Reeder, Keto Diet by Dr Josh Axe, Summary of cancer as a metabolic disease by Dr Thomas Seyfried and watching Dr Eric Berg on utube. Xxxx th-cam.com/video/IgThNztMUzs/w-d-xo.html
0:00: 📚 Fat cells are not just inert energy storage depots, but also endocrine organs that secrete hormones and play a role in various bodily functions. 8:51: 📝 The traditional advice of eating less and exercising more for weight loss is flawed because it focuses on calorie restriction and can lead to increased hunger and rebound weight gain. Instead, the endocrine component, specifically insulin levels, should be prioritized to manipulate fat cell growth and shrinkage. 17:16: 💡 Insulin is a hormone that lowers blood glucose levels by allowing glucose to enter cells, but it also has an anabolic effect on all cells in the body, which can lead to insulin resistance. 27:34: 📈 Insulin resistance is a widespread health disorder caused by constantly elevated insulin levels, which is often overlooked due to the focus on glucose control. 33:16: 🔑 Insulin resistance is a survival mechanism in the body, but it can lead to various negative effects such as migraines, infertility, and increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. 41:51: 💡 Insulin resistance occurs when fat cells become insulin resistant, leading to the release of pro-inflammatory proteins and the spread of insulin resistance to other tissues in the body. 51:04: 📊 Insulin resistance can be determined through blood measurements such as fasting insulin levels and the ratio of triglycerides to HDL cholesterol. 1:03:08: 🥦 Lower insulin by controlling carbohydrates and prioritizing animal protein, while also focusing on improving sleep habits to lower stress levels. 1:06:25: ✅ To improve insulin resistance: lower stress, prioritize protein, fill remaining calories with fat, and practice intermittent fasting. 1:14:16: 💡 Wearing continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) can empower individuals to make their own dietary changes based on real-time glucose level feedback. 1:21:51: 🥤 The speaker discusses the digestion of protein and the potential impact of whey shakes on weight sensitivity. Recap by Tammy AI
For me, I started out with carnivore. I ate nothing but meat, salt, and water for about two weeks and after that now keto very low carbohydrates no breads pastas on and on just good meats, cheeses, good fat and I’ve lost tons of weight. I’ve never felt this good in my life I’m 46 and I feel 20. I also I am wheelchair dependent due to cerebral palsy. So I don’t burn a lot of calories on a given day like the average person I do when I go to the gym and do the hand cycle or lift weights, so this is been the only “diet” that I’ve ever had any success in losing weight and feeling better I don’t feel deprived at all because it’s Great food and I’m cooking it myself so I know what’s in it so if you’re on the fence you might want to give it a shot always talk to Dr.
Have you looked into sauna therapy? There's some great stuff on TH-cam about sauna and it could help with your CP - spastic? I have a wellness and massage center and have seen some great results with sauna therapy. Get your MD to write a script for it and your insurance can pay!
To clarify his comment on proteins: He mentions egg white protein. He mentions not avoiding the fat that comes with protein. NOTE: the yoke of an egg is the necessary fat in the proper quantity needed for that particular egg white protein. i.e. never eat just the whites!
So funny, how well they taught every American to stop eating the yolks, then went on to say only the white!!! followed by many years of eggs are just plain old horrible! you’ll get strokes, diabetes or astronomically high cholesterol… The tv commercials I saw daily were endless, billboards across the nation too, like big bro was doing us peons some big old favor…. Looking out for the plebs… or were they just creating customers for the health care industry, keeping us guessing at what’s healthy makes big bucks
The migraine link to insulin resistance is critical information. I suffered from migraine headaches for decades. All I was ever offered were pills, never diet advice. I am now over migraines just by diet changes that I figured out on my own.
Such a great video! I’m 35 and I have lost 65lbs in the last 6 months by cutting out sugar gluten & dairy, only eating natural carbs, prioritizing my sleep, drinking only water & more of it and living a fasting lifestyle. I do OMAD but only short term, most days I have a 4-6 hour eating window with 2 meals but I try not to eat my meals at the same time every day, absolutely no snacking in between meals and some 24-72hr fasts every once in a while. I started at 285lbs on January 1st and lost the first 40lbs in 4 months with hardly any working out. When I did it was maybe 4-6 times a month that I would go with my friend to the gym and I would lift as heavy as I could and then walk on the treadmill on an incline for 30 minutes. For the last 6 years I have lost and regained the same 30 to 40lbs every year and it’s been so frustrating and discouraging. I’m so thankful that I found Dr. Jason Fung, Dr. Pradip Jamnadas & Dr. Mindy Pelz. Those 3 and videos like this have helped me learn how my body actually works and it’s amazing how our bodies can heal themselves. I have no loose skin even though I lost weight so fast, I had nerve damage from a C-Section 7 years ago that has now completely healed, my acne has cleared up and I’m even growing less gray hairs. I started the year in size 22 jeans and I’m now wearing size 10! I’m so excited to keep fighting for my health and to keep learning and soon I’m going to be out of the 200s and I have no doubt that I will be out of them for good.
Lower insulin resistance by lessening stress (in large part by getting more sleep) and four dietary tips: fewer carbs; prioritize high-quality protein (focus on animal protein, whey, egg whites); fill all remaining calories with fat (fat has no effect on insulin; focus on animal fat and fruit fats i.e. coconut, avocado, olives vis-a-vis oils...avoid soybean, cottonseed, canola oil); time-restricted eating/intermittent fasting. Also working your muscles stimulates an insulin-like effect of pulling glucose into the muscle despite insulin resistance. Do not finish working out by loading up on carbs because it will undo the benefit of the muscles synthesizing insulin on their own.
Always interesting on videos by experts where people have to come in and provide their own ‘expert’ thoughts. Such a weird impulse. Also to present them as rules. People should NOT eat whey protein as a rule my man.
I cured my mental illness after 25 years just by going to keto diet No more medication no more depression no more mood swing no more panic attacks And lost 40 pounds I wanted to test I started carbohydrate and my mood started to swing and get depressed as soon as I quit again Within a week everything went back to normal I am perfectly fine now on keto diet If low carbohydrate was effective treatment for epileptic seizure medications I was taking Is prescribed for epileptic seizure and bipolar disorder When I say I do not have any more symptoms of mental illness I really mean it Because my friends and family tell me I'm a totally different person when I'm on low carb No symptoms whatsoever
Its great to hear that. I am also interested in keto curing psychological issues, especially anxiety, panic etc. How long it took you to notice improvements? Thanks
Wow, mate that's fricken Awesome!! I'm so glad to hear. I did the same thing with testing stuff out with food, and it's so true, foods affect your mind and your guts, and for me it was inflation and really bad Anxiety and depression. Getting better, but I have only started for a few weeks, I feel so much fucking clearer it's ridiculously good!! Thanks for sharing your story mate! Cheers!
Ma'am what is your opinion of the typical indian diet? I think it has too many carbs and lacks in protein. It might be fine if you do some physical work but not fine for those living a sedantary lifestyle.
As an Indian, how can you agree with his logic of carbs are bad and Keto is the way to go? Indians, Chinese and other Asians have eaten rice and wheat for generations and generations without all these metabolic diseases.
Ben is always good, but, in this interview he is Great. Dhru is a great host and allows his guests to speak and elaborate. Thank you, Ben and Dhru 😘🤗🙏🏼
Probably the best video on the topic of insulin resistance. This is a must watch for anybody on a Keto diet or a diabetic or anybody wanting better health.
My considerable internet research has finally paid off and recognized with extremely good facts to exchange with my friends and the world. Medical Doctors and Dermatologists said (HSV 1&2, Herpes zosters) do not have a medical cure because the virus is capable of hiding within the human cells, it remains protected from your immune system. Herpes isn't an incurable virus! your immune system has the tools to fight it back, But because it is able to lay dormant in protected cells, your immune system is unable to remove it from your body, But with strong reactive herbal medication, it is capable of getting rid of the virus gradually and totally from your body without any side effects, natural herbs kill the virus totally not just reducing the outbreaks. I just got my test result today after 7 days of using the herbal Medication and it came out Negative to both HSV 1&2.im so delighted I recommend this to anyone suffering from herpes virus. You can get natural Herbal Medication from Dr. Aloha contact him through his email: Alohaherbalhome@gmail.com or WhatsApp +1(202)871-3222.
Thanks for this talk ......just started the steak and egg diet and after 3 days glucose during day 91 fasting glucose in morning 118.......now this is after 1 year diagnosis of type 2 diabetes with fasting glucose of 260 and a1c 12.5 !!!!! Man it's incredible what stopping carbs does !!!!
Agreed and for your benefit or others who may not already know, the expression is synonymously "hunger pangs". Pangs means "a sudden sharp or painful emotion".
hardest part is avoiding snacking first few days, once you get into Keto you will feel good and your needing to snack goes away - KEEP THE GOALS IN MIND
I get anxious and act like a bxtch when I am overly hungry, so it's not about starving to death for me. I can't take my mood and my hands may shake if I am overly hungry.
I do! I made a Ben Bikman playlist that is filled with interviews, talks and presentations going back several years. Nearly 4 years ago I was able to reverse my T2 in big part due to Ben and the vast knowledge he acquired and so freely shares with us! I also just really love how enthusiastically excited he gets when being interviewed! 🤣

This was really excellent. I need to lose 70 - 80 pounds. I am really struggling. I'm 69 and have been overweight since I was 10. I have spent years yoyo dieting and have a very slow metabolism. I'm going to implement these suggestions. Thank God for doctors like you.
I am Indian and this podcast is so much needed in our society where diet is literally carb driven .also amazed to hear that migraine is also a by product of insulin resistance . Such an informative podcast . Thanks dhru and Birman .
Start listening at 13 minutes to hear about his buffet thought experiment 18:30 insulin summary 20:00 muscle is main consumer 26; gluten-free often -> more insulin 28; insulin resistance
Great., Clear and very detailed scientific based explanation practically to stay healthy and longer life..Thank you so much Dr. Bickman.Appreciate your big contribution to this sickly generation of our world today. Mis information is the root of it.The Bible says that for lack of knowledge people, indeed perished.Thank you for this podcast, too.⭐⭐
The best interview I’ve everrrrrrr listen to. I mean I just learned what’s I’m going through right now. I’m plant based and grain free ... To cure my migraines. I listened to other podcast that states wheat is ‘good’ for you. I started eating gluten free and binged on dairy free ice cream last week. I got so sick and my migraines have been going on for two weeks. I’m 5 days wheat free and my body reacts to wheat withdrawal by breaking out in hives. I’m staying away from wheat forever!!
And all refined carbs! Stay away from all of them! And seed oils. You would find it easier to go animal based. Meat, fish, eggs, butter, animal fats and all non starchy vegetables.
This video is one of the most informative interviews on TH-cam in reference to fat burning and insulin resistance. Thank you for explaining science at the rudimentary level for us common folk! 🙏🏿❤
my husband has a belly fat and we recently discovered he has high blood pressure. The doctors never mentioned anything about his insulin. They just gave him pills to lower blood pressure and told him to loose belly fat. Thank you so much for this!
Most Doctors blanket treat patients encouraging the popping of pills & administering insulin... don’t know the real science behind insulin resistance today. T2D can be reversed by controlling the carbs you eat to about 40-50 carbs daily.. one or two meals a day..fast after evening meal abt 6pm..drink water in between on a fast.. too much insulin does makes you fatter over time.
My migraines are gone! I haven’t had a migraine since I started IF and started Keto, not even a mild headache. My triglycerides are lower and my A1c went down from 6.7 to 5.6. My energy levels are up the roof! Best thing I’ve ever done.
Wow! I am 86 years of age, and used to wonder why my skin tags would be very prominent at some times, and at others would disappear. I have just checked, and at the moment I have only a couple of tiny ones. This could well be because I have been taking note of my diet and restricting my carbs this past couple of weeks. Fascinating. This video is really very useful. I shall certainly be adopting Dr. Bikman's suggestions.
In the first 2 weeks of starting keto, a large mole I had on my face for decades, dried up and disappeared. Very bad acid reflux gone in 2 weeks. I believe I have a wheat allergy.
Just ordered the book! I’m in the field and this is the best breakdown of complex concepts I’ve yet to encounter. This gentleman and the moderator are performing a public service. Thank you.
I listen to podcasts all the time, and this is the most informative and enlightening podcast I have ever listened to! And Dhru is such a wonderful interviewer, he lets his guests shine!
As someone who has had insulin resistance for 40 years, this is the most amazing and interesting thing I’ve ever watched. I wish I had known this years ago but I hope young women struggling with infertility find it in time.
I feel extremely fortunate to have stumbled across this podcast. I've been struggling with menopausal weight gain and severe bloating with meals. Im also gluten intolerant. I feel empowered to make some big changes to my diet and lifestyle. Getting Dr. Bikmans book now!❤
This was so helpful and inspirational to me. I am dealing with breast cancer for the second time. I am 59 years old and have gained a huge amount of weight due to stress and not taking care of myself through stressful times. I don’t sleep. You have helped me see the relationship between insulin and sleep and cancer and fat. I have some hope that I can reverse what is happening.I eat mostly low-carb but I used to be better at it. I have a renewed commitment to a keto lifestyle. When things get tough around me and my family members, my diet and ability to sleep are the first things that suffer. And I will be buying your book with enthusiasm and sharing it!
Stephanie Loder, please look into Floressence Tea, the book used, on Amazon is The Essiac Report.....Canada. I turned my friend onto it for her stage 4 breast cancer. (Sorry we can't treat you anymore, it is causing more harm than good). Before 2016 it took 3 months or 4 boxes, do NOT use distilled water from plastic bottles. My friend lost insomnia at day 15, same as everyone. She showed her Oncologist on day 30ish, and he swore at her, threw the box, and forbid its use. She kept using, we used it full strength cold instead of hot. At arround 3.5 months he kept calling her back for new blood work, CAT SCAN , and tests she couldn't name, because the cancer showed up missing. She was cancer free 7 years then got it again and died. Success is 5 years for western medicine. Everone who survived 20 years repeats the tea the same 3 months yearly, but not 12 months yearly for kidney rest. Ps . Bladder, Prostate and Kidney cancers need 4 months minimum. Also 6 weeks use befor surgery will reverse ganglions into a perfect blob for easy removal, on many subjects. See letters in back of book. Yes it crosses the blood brain barrier to help tumors there. Actually it never cures cancer it only removes poison like pesticides and heavy metals, then T-cells begin to be perfect and they kill cancer and viruses like they are supposed to. Note: do full research on GMOs to kick all out of your diet today, and GMO canola is hidden 34% in all oil from Mafia. Try all oil from Trader Joe's , and the California oil with blue butterfly 🦋 is good. This may lose a few diseases for you. The Costco olive oil with blue butterfly is a lie. Soy lethecin is GMO and your deathly enemy, all Trader Joe is GMOfree, use the pound plus bars for chocolate now because the soy lethecin is God made not GMO, so is perfect. I'm finding Doctors trained to say " oh, YOUR kind of cancer can't be treated with that tea, for the ones who do know about it. Have friends who died from this.
Hi Steph, thinking of you during this journey. Keep going. If you can add IF fasting, please do. I cut out carbs and found that okra (boiled) and beetroot helped me a lot when im hungry. Please dont give up on yourself. Xx also youtube had a page called popsugar which have mild fitness programs you can do sitting down. Another tip: when in fasting mode if it gets difficult. I used to chop large cucumbers and eat that all day till i ended my fast. I sometimes have around 5 long cucumbers a day. Helped me a lot.
Around 52:14 Dr. Bikman was talking about the triglycerides to HDL ratio being a marker for how insulin sensitive one is. So I did a self experiment where I did a 7 day water only fast and on day 5 I had my blood drawn. (I am super nerdy and wanted to see what happens to the body and blood markers when no food is consumed). Anyways, my pre fast level was tri: 38, HDL:78 making my ratio .48 (which is well below the 1.5 he mentioned). Then during the water fast, my triglycerides rose to 119 and HDL lowered to 61 making my ratio 1.95 (which would look like I’m insulin resistant despite my insulin being low due to no food and my body running off pure body fat.) Nonetheless, I just had blood drawn again and triglycerides lowered to 33 and HDL rose to 71 making my ratio back to .49, insulin sensitive once again! The human body is fascinating!!! ❤❤❤❤
His book is the most important factor in my improvement in health. I'm taking it to my doctor's appointment when I meet my new doctor. I would love to give it to her. Knowledge is power
Just found this. Message heard. I’ve been on a quest for better health for years now. In 2012 my insulin according to the triglycerides divided by HDL was 6.7 (had to go back and check). In January of 2019 it was 1.38 (also down 40 lbs). If I hadn’t watched this awesome presentation I would have never known that insulin could be measured and monitored. Lately I had gone back to lots of carbs and sugars so I’m going to run, not walk, to get some blood work done! I want to see how bad I let things go. I watched in an effort to get myself back on track. Mission accomplished- thank you!
You just provided an answer to my question. I am 74 years old. I try to eat healthy. Just had a high blood pressure event. I could not take BP medicine. I had horrible side effects. I have not been able to lose weight. My average fasting glucose level for 7 days was 96. Thank you for this powerful interview. You gave me what I need to do.
I am an Indian who is not a vegetarian or vegan. Been on keto and omad for 3 months now. Down 30 pounds. I also do a 20 to 30 minute hiit about 5 to 6 days a week. Feel great. I slowly realize that I am not tempted to have carbs as much I used to.
Hi Piyush, am starting my 7 days water day and gradually planning to do OMAD, having said that I don’t consume chicken and red meat can you please help suggesting some foods that you usually eat which doesn’t spike insulin and low in carbs as throughout my life I have been eating mostly carbs. Will appreciate your revert! Thanks
my appreciation of your comment stems from your last sentence. The observation that carbs become less tempting with time on a Keto diet. That's good to know and of itself will provide me with some motivation to go with Keto and stick with it.
So to summarize this amazing discussion : Small changes makes a big difference and can be a make or break to your health(specially the ones who have excess fat in the body) 1. Insulin resistance is the enemy - Cancer, Alzeihmers,Type 1,2,3 diabetes and a bunch of other health problems all lowering your life expectancy(for real) - high fat(fat cannot shrink without insulin being low - triggrs a response to Insulin which when fights tough battles with high glucose foods too often, turns resistant to that fight and the enemy keeps getting stronhger) 2. Switch to a low carb diet(dont eat high carb even after working out since it negates the improved insulin sensitivity achieved during and even after the workout) 3. Try intermittent fasting(where you have a balance between feeding and a fasted state instead of spiking insulin/eating every couple hours) 4.- STRESS - Reduced Stress means lower cortisol and adrenaline, that is insulin friendly and vice versa, easy solution= QUALITY SLEEP SCHEDULE So, low carb means less spike in Insulin - To do 1 To do 2: High protein diet and resistance training(overall anabolic state - catabolic only achieved when insulin functions properly haha) To do 3: Lower Stress- Connect to the environment, improve sleep quality To do 4 : Time restricted feeding / Intermittent Fasting To do 5 : ADD FATS to your diet. our bodies are not meant to process protein without fats(add in quality plant fats to your diet like avocados, olives and Coconut oil). Carbs only in form of low GI and preferably from fruits and vegetables while completely eliminating grains, corns and rice.
Thanks for the excellent summary. 👍Watching an 83-minute talking-head video without a slide deck is arduous, even at 2x speed. You just saved me 82 minutes!
Not many videos of almost 90 minutes I can sit through...but this is one of them explains insulin resistance and what to do about it in a very easy to follow way👍
I’ve struggled to lose weight for 20 years. Every year I seemed to eat healthier and healthier. I cut out all processed 20 years ago, cut dairy 5 years ago, red meat and pork 2 years ago plant based now. I worked out 6x a week. Walks, weights swimming. Calories 1,700-1,900. Nothing worked! I gained weight. Started IF 1pm-6pm (eating window) keto and doing long fasts here and there. Finally…. I’m dropping lbs fast, without changing my food only time, half as much workouts too. Love!!
Kate my doctor missed my insulin related high blood pressure also. When I went on the meat diet, and ate once a day, I finally cured the blood pressure, lost weight, and normalized all the other numbers
@@kicknadeadcat BRAVO SO IS ME TOO.I AM 59 BUT I AM FEELING MORE GOOD THAN I WAS IN MY 20s AS I WAS IN PRE DIABETIC RANGE BEING A DEVOUT MUSLIM FASTING A LUNAR MONTH ONCE A YEAR IS OBLIGATORY ON EVERY MUSLIM WHICH WE OBSERVE AS USUAL BUT THIS YEAR STARTED EXERCISE DURING FASTING STARTED EATING LESS WITH LOW CARB THE RESULT WAS AMAZING BUT NOW I SUCCESSFULLY GOT CONTROL BUT EATING LESS CARBS & MORE GREENISH VEGs WITH SMOOTHEI AS WELL AS INTERMITTENT FASTING AND REGULAR EXERCISE THEN ONE CAN ENJOY REAL LIFE & REAL YOU KNOW WELL.STAY BLESSED

Thank you Dr.lm have been struggling for the past 7 years to lose weight to no avail , this will be a turning point in my life.l wish to find out if insulin resistance is related to fibroid growth in the uterus
I often reflect back to moments in my life when I was in great shape but I can't seem to pinpoint the recipe/ingredients that delivered those results. I know I was lifting, and running, and eating well but the memory is vague and I have had trouble trying to replicate those moments. I know it's in me to do it but it's like a puzzle I can't comprehend now. This video explains the mystery behind it all. At age 53, I think I finally understand what I need to do. This is incredible! I'm so glad I stumbled across this video! Bring on 2021!! I'm so encouraged!!! Thank you very much for making this video.
Now I understand when I eat bread 🍞 or 🍚 rice I just wanna sleep! My energy goes all the way down and it takes like 1hr to come back. I changed and eat breakfast 2eggs with spinach feels good and lunch sweet potato with chicken and broccoli feels so good like whole day and enjoy my workout with full of energy. Thank you Dr
I love bread. I love all sorts of bread. It's delicious and as long as it's new, it's very filling! I gave it up! Along with rice, pasta and potatoes, and other sugars. I eat like I was on a Pacific Island, with no supermart! My body is shedding water, my legs stopped swelling, and my skin is not being stretched to weeping point. I eat only what flies, runs or swims; or grows on a bush. No root crops at all. I lost 56 lbs in next to no time, but now that's slowed. I learned my lesson.
I shall watch at least twice...l need to understand better..sounds great...thank you...get to learn more. (Illuminated heads dont roll🤣😂...no offense brov) .🇬🇧
Yes! I ignored it when my doc told me 10 yrs ago I was insulin resistant....HBP, now type 2 diabetic. Wish I'd known this info 10 yrs ago. My doc told me to eat less , exercise more🥺 do it now! I am now 60 and ready to be healthy!!
@@marianne1959 eat less exercise more doesn’t work. Tried it for decades. 4 years very low carbs and eating real food only. Very low to No sugar starches or wheat. 4 years later, No longer pre diabetic, acid reflux disappeared in 2 weeks never to return. I’m at the weight and waist I was in my 20’s. Down 33 lbs and 6 in of my waist. Blood pressure went from 155/90 to 90/60 last visit to doctor. I laughed when my doctor told me I’m a perfectly healthily 20 year old. I’m 69………
The carb debates rage but the one thing that can’t be denied no matter ones opinion is that there is no physiologic need to consume carbohydrate. I’ve been eating no more than 30g / day (never from added sugar) since the 90’s. My only carb sources are a small amount of a few low toxic veggies and a few fruits (squashes and berries), sometimes whole milk or yogurt. Almost everyone I know is overweight and they make fun of my diet. I get eye rolls and sighs when I decline carbs or ask for substitutions.
Miraculous job!! Boy I could listen to the two of you for MANY hours!! I feel like I've been to a wonderful medical class because I have learned sooooo much!!! THANK YOU❣️❣️❣️❣️
4:40 a Doctor admits he didn't know something! Now he really has my attention and I appreciate the candor. Thanks Dhru for bringing Dr B to the discussion.
I am an Indian...Thanks so much for touching so many wonderful points and sharing knowledge and wisdom on the biggest health problem of our country! I have started IF ...let’s see 😊
@@stefanweilhartner4415 I've read that paper too. I don't think he was involved in the research, but is just referencing it. As I recall the paper showed that the Trig:HDL ratio was the best predictor of cardiovascular risk that they looked at (far better than TC or LDL), but of course the paper has been ignored by the AHA and most of the medical profession because statins don't lower triglycerides or raise HDL. If they don't have a drug to push these biomarkers in the right direction, they're not interested.
I am in human nutrition epidemiology and this was one of the best interviews that I have heard. I did my thesis on insulin resistance in auto immune and have been doing research for my PhD on PCOS and insulin. He is amazing.... Dietary change Lower stress Behavior changes with lifting weights and relax your central NERVOUS system.
@@AnaGarcia-zt9oq What recommendation would you have for my grand daughter who has type 1 diabetes She has all the protocols in order from her specialist doctor but the fact that se must continuously replenish her insulin by injection results in weight gain Is there any dietary factor that could improve this disroder?
KELLI, That research sounds interesting. Years ago I had to do a thesis for my Master's degree, and remember how much work that was. If you're researching something that you're intersted in, like you seem to be doing, I could see where it could actually be fun. Speaking of insulin resistance, my ederly Mother has been type 2 diabetic for most of her life, and she is now totally off her insulin. After learning that insulin resistance could be caused by deficiencies in vanadium and chromium, I convinced her to give it a try, and it worked. She no longer takes insulin injections and her fasting glucose is normal, with her A1C around 5. She also eats high carb starchy foods and sugary things. She has never used a low carb or keto diet to control her glood sugar. I read that in the early 1900's before they had insulin, doctors were using these 2 trace minerals to treat T2 diabetes. As you know, insulin and diabetic pills are a billion dollar industry, so big pharma apparently suppressed this cure long ago. I think you are onto something with that insulin resistance connection to auto immune disorders. My mother has had Rheumatoid arthritis for years and since the vanadium and chromium has reversed her insulin resistance, the arthitis seems to have diappeared. She has also had a high uric acid and gout flares, which I recently learned is common in T2 diabetics. She hasn't had a gout flare since reversing her insulin resistance. Anyway, that research you are doing sounds interesting and you are obviously a very intelligent woman. I'd like to buy your book if you ever write one. Have you ever thought about writing a book?
I listened to it twice. Just to memorize some of this stuff. Being from a south Asian country, my mom doesn’t believe me when i say rice or wheat bread is bad. I buy organic for her. I am working on myself so i can proof this thing works!!!!!
Brown/unpolished rice and unrefined whole wheat bread is recommended because they still contain B vitamins and Niacin which is stripped away in white rice and bread.
Took a loooong time and a lot of arguments to get my South American parents to alter their diet and opt for whole grains over processed white flour/ bread. Unfortunately i was left with a terrible addiction to sugar thanks to my childhood.
@@jaygordon4053 You couldn’t be more wrong. Complex carbohydrates are fuel for the brain and body and they are the ideal food for humans. I suggest reading the China Study and the Starch Solution for reference because you have been seriously misinformed!
Brown rice and 100% whole bread is fine, is what I was told. Also, the way puerto ricans fix their rice and beans is supposed to have a lower glycemic index, with the beans being cooked with the rice. I was told that by a good endocrinologist.
I would like outline the professionalism of Dhru to make this conversation very comprehensive and simple, though the topic its not simple. And the doctor was outstanding on his model explanations. For regular person its a lot to digest for once, but I'll invest more my time and this video again. Thanks gentlemen for your dedication!
So much detail here, the best Bikman interview that I've heard. Even after reading his book, there were new things that I understood from this talk. We're so lucky that he shares so much of his knowledge so freely.
Thank you for having Dr Birman on your podcast. It was great to have one complete explanation of insulin resistance and how to introduce a better eating plan.
AMAZING podcast! I had a lipid panel, and my Dr. told me to eat soy, no fat, and lots of fruits and vegetables, along with canola and olive oil. BUT, I leared just now that I'm at high risk for heart attack AND I'm insulin resistant. Big thanks! This podcast probably just saved my life. Love you for this. 😍
Thank you Dr Ben. And i would like to give a shout out to Dr Atkins who is the true pioneer of the low carb, high fat diet. He never gets the recognition he deserves..especially when the world was ridiculing him 50 yrs ago. RIP
Thank you so much for this interview. I was hooked from start to end. I am a mom with small kids and stress is killing me and my body. Gaining weight all the time. Now I am on a keto diet for two months but that was not showing much. Your pillar about the intermitted fasting will do some push on that I hope. Thank you again!
I had the same problem lost nothing when I first started keto. I fasted for4 days which kick started the weight loss. Now I've lost 66 lbs! Keto and omad!
Thank you Dr. Bikman, I see your heart, passion, to help people. Thanks for your truthful and honest conversation. Thanks Dhru!!! For your vision and mission to impact lives!
Anyone else feels like they have been unknowingly (or knowingly through laziness and stress) been abusing their body when the body is literally trying its best to keep us healthy as best it can. I feel like a shitty partner. Sorry body, I'll take care of you more!
Just eat like the gorillas do, 65% greens and add as many type of leaves as possible, eat fruits and vegetables and nuts( Omega 3's) eat low protein diets! , eat your herbs which you need. Gorillas have low stress lives so I agree with most of what is said here.
@@stevemashford3700 Aren't we genetically closer to chimps than Gorillas? Plus our guts aren't long enough to break down so much plant matter and get all the nutrients out that we need. We aren't cows. If you look at the way our chest cavity is built and how our guts are positioned, we are made for meat processing more than plant processing. We need protein and fats. Carbs ( via plants and fruits ) can be supplemented by the diet or made by the liver. They are nonessential to be eaten directly. They are treats. Plus plants have lots of antinutrients because they don't wanna be eaten haha so they shouldn't make up the majority of one's diet. Moderate protein is better with higher fat content and low carb for longevity. Toss a human into the wild without modern conveniences and medicine, they probably won't be looking for a salad. Thanks for your response though! ^_^
@@MsTeaAndCrump3ts Sorry, chimps also closer to us in chronological time the Gorillas are most genetically like us. All the best nutritionalists are now saying eat more greens and vary them widely, eat low g i carbohydrates in the way of fruit and vegetables and nuts for Omega 3's. Of course protein is still out to lunch but I believe 1 to 2 grams of true protein per kilogram of LEAN body mass is required. Omegas feed your brain and cell walls, proteins for growth and repairs, carbohydrates are for fuel . Protein and good fats are also fuel however slower and harder to digest. If you want more I could call you anywhere in the world. These diet requirements are in the bible actually. Steve
@@stevemashford3700 Ahh I see what you are saying, I think we agree on most things. I think the push for varied greens has to do with the new research coming out about the gut microbiome and varied sources to feed said bugs haha. I misunderstood when you said low protein, thought you were inferring that we should eat 0.5g/kg of lean body mass or something like that. 1g/kg is very fair, I dare as 2g a bit much BUT if it fits your lifestyle, it makes sense.
A fasting blood panel, find the Triglycerides ÷ HDL = 1.5 or less is Insulin sensitive, which is good. Higher than 1.5 is Insulin Resistance which is alarm bells.
As someone with type II, this is an interesting tip, looking over my blood work in the past years, a keto diet helped me get to a 1.3 ratio from.....a number I'd rather not say. General idea, went from a HbA1c of 10.5 to 4.7.
These guests are incredibly well versed in their fields and I have heard several times how they appreciate Purohit's ability to formulate and ask the right questions. I am hooked.
Too often we have influencers talk about calories in calories out and never ever mention insulin 🤷🏻♂️ Thanks for making/sharing this information with us! ✌🏼😎👍🏼
Keto has been a major game changer in my life! I've lost 155 from just eating a keto diet, I don't let myself get hungry, I don't work out. I use to be so sick, in pain, and just tired! Not a problem any more unless I decide to eat something I know I shouldn't.
Thank you Ben Bickman! Your explanation and information needs to get out to everyone and especially the doctors... I have been suffering migraines for 20 years that are disabling. I have sleep apnea, and wake up many times a night sometimes in a panic, with adrenaline and cortisol dumps, causing my body to throw out glucose and then insulin. I was developing insulin resistance and did not know it, and every time the doctor did my blood work they said everything looked great and I was not diabetic blah blah.. I started gaining lots of weight unexplainedly suddenly gaining 60 lb in a few years without increase calories. Kept going back to the doctor and asking are you sure I don't have a metabolic syndrome, they sent me to an endocrinology clinic and confirmed I had low glucose, a high metabolic rate and told me that could not be the problem, then I went to a functional doctor and they tested my fasting insulin and several other factors like cortisol and said you are suffering from too much cortisol, insulin resistance and leptin resistance and that's why like a switch, your body has started gaining weight and you're suffering these terrible headaches. I cut out all sugar except for what's naturally in fruits and veggies and a migraines are gone, the weight is coming off, the heavy menstrual cycle will hopefully improve. Listening to you I now know that it takes years to become insulin / Leptin resistant and the signs are there if you know what to look for long before you get sick. My triglycerides and that HDL ratio you talk about were a problem 20 years ago and nobody raised this as an issue. It's appalling that modern doctors do not understand this and even endocrinologists told me I had nothing to worry about... What goes on with the medical community? Why don't they know this? It's the epidemic of our time and they don't know it and they're sending people away, leaving them without hope and without tools while they get sick, suffer low quality of life and die. MEDICINE SHOULD START WITH NUTRITION FULL STOP! Millions are suffering needlessly. Thank you for all that you do!
This is really great information, I have been wondering why I have not been able to release my tummy weight... now I have an understanding. SO how do we start to reverse insulin resistance?
This dr. is amazing. Most the doctors have more interest to sell drugs from the Pharmaceutic industry than cure. That's the reason they don't explain or try to inform.
Best medical video I've ever seen ill be buying this book I'm a type 1 diabetic use the FreeStyle Libre and he's right ever since I've been using it I've noticed how much muscles can bring down your glucose levels literally instantly (5mins) walking stops mine rising after a meal from 0.4mmol increments to -2mmol
Just diagnosed with diabetes. My doc said just keep calories under 1500. It makes me furious that the medical docs know nothing to fix problems. Meds are the answer to them. I cant thank you and Dr. Bikman for the video and information. I guess we really do have to take care of our own medical problems.
That was fantastic and has explained so much to me about myself, I could listen to Dr Bikman all-day. I have been following these guidelines (more or less, "no animal protein") for the last 50 years, still the same weight and size as I was in my early twenties and never been ill, all makes sense now, thanks doc
I don’t know if it is enough fat, but I fill an ice cube tray with coconut milk and freeze it, then put the cubes in freezer bags......so that I don’t waste it in the refrigerator, plus, it makes it easier to measure out the amount I want to add to my whey protein. When I make my whey protein, I add two of the coconut ice cubes to it, plus my almond milk, and whatever. I usually add cacao and a collagen.

Where can I buy a CGM?
I lost 50 pounds in 3 months changing nothing other than not eating bread and potatoes. Kinda insanely easy
Thank you
Thank you!
This is so helpful!! Thank you!

To clarify his comment on proteins:
He mentions egg white protein.
He mentions not avoiding the fat that comes with protein.
NOTE: the yoke of an egg is the necessary fat in the proper quantity needed for that particular egg white protein. i.e. never eat just the whites!
So funny, how well they taught every American to stop eating the yolks, then went on to say only the white!!! followed by many years of eggs are just plain old horrible! you’ll get strokes, diabetes or astronomically high cholesterol…
The tv commercials I saw daily were endless, billboards across the nation too, like big bro was doing us peons some big old favor….
So happy for you! I wish you good health and a very happy life! 🎉
I DON’T understand how you can sleep without having (necessarily) eaten recently. Is this not a problem for you?

I have never heard a better discussion on insulin, fat, and overall health!
25:08 Including that gluten-free processed foods make you fat with alternate ingredients tapioca starch and brown rice syrup.
Me nether, I am blown away.
Agreed makes so much sense
Dr. Bikman is the best!!
This is the single best video I have ever seen regarding health, insulin resistance and how to best keep our bodies healthy! Wow!!!
A moderate amount of carbs will help the protein get into the muscle cells.
Great summary

Ma'am what is your opinion of the typical indian diet? I think it has too many carbs and lacks in protein. It might be fine if you do some physical work but not fine for those living a sedantary lifestyle.
I read that in indian accent and had a good laugh. 😅 sorry, too funny.

T2D can be reversed by controlling the carbs you eat to about 40-50 carbs daily.. one or two meals a day..fast after evening meal abt 6pm..drink water in between on a fast.. too much insulin does makes you fatter over time.
Pills cost money …they don’t make money when you fast

Thank you sir your video is so clear and powerful you make this topic so simple to understand.
Thanks
Don’t u eat fruit and veggies
my appreciation of your comment stems from your last sentence. The observation that carbs become less tempting with time on a Keto diet. That's good to know and of itself will provide me with some motivation to go with Keto and stick with it.
@@sherrymiller8167 Fruit is a bad idea until you are at optimal weight. Then it is your dessert and you should never load up on dessert.
Exercising is the key to good health
So to summarize this amazing discussion : Small changes makes a big difference and can be a make or break to your health(specially the ones who have excess fat in the body)
1. Insulin resistance is the enemy - Cancer, Alzeihmers,Type 1,2,3 diabetes and a bunch of other health problems all lowering your life expectancy(for real) - high fat(fat cannot shrink without insulin being low - triggrs a response to Insulin which when fights tough battles with high glucose foods too often, turns resistant to that fight and the enemy keeps getting stronhger)
2. Switch to a low carb diet(dont eat high carb even after working out since it negates the improved insulin sensitivity achieved during and even after the workout)
3. Try intermittent fasting(where you have a balance between feeding and a fasted state instead of spiking insulin/eating every couple hours)
4.- STRESS - Reduced Stress means lower cortisol and adrenaline, that is insulin friendly and vice versa, easy solution= QUALITY SLEEP SCHEDULE
So, low carb means less spike in Insulin - To do 1
To do 2: High protein diet and resistance training(overall anabolic state - catabolic only achieved when insulin functions properly haha)
To do 3: Lower Stress- Connect to the environment, improve sleep quality
To do 4 : Time restricted feeding / Intermittent Fasting
To do 5 : ADD FATS to your diet. our bodies are not meant to process protein without fats(add in quality plant fats to your diet like avocados, olives and Coconut oil). Carbs only in form of low GI and preferably from fruits and vegetables while completely eliminating grains, corns and rice.
Thank you
Many thanks 🎉❤

I’ve struggled to lose weight for 20 years. Every year I seemed to eat healthier and healthier. I cut out all processed 20 years ago, cut dairy 5 years ago, red meat and pork 2 years ago plant based now. I worked out 6x a week. Walks, weights swimming. Calories 1,700-1,900. Nothing worked! I gained weight. Started IF 1pm-6pm (eating window) keto and doing long fasts here and there. Finally…. I’m dropping lbs fast, without changing my food only time, half as much workouts too. Love!!
You need to eat red meat
I never knew my high blood pressure was insulin related. Makes total sense. Thank you
Kate my doctor missed my insulin related high blood pressure also. When I went on the meat diet, and ate once a day, I finally cured the blood pressure, lost weight, and normalized all the other numbers
In my case I never thought my migraines were caused by insulin resistance. I am shocked. My glucose levels and A1C have always been normal.

The carb debates rage but the one thing that can’t be denied no matter ones opinion is that there is no physiologic need to consume carbohydrate. My only carb sources are a small amount of a few low toxic veggies and a few fruits (squashes and berries), sometimes whole milk or yogurt.

Rice and carbs are not bad, Asian have do not have the rate of diabetes we have in the west, there is an excellent TEDx on the subject.

You couldn’t be more wrong.

Intermittent fasting and keto
