He'd have learnt that oil and gas are the precursors of over 6,000 materials, including oil to lubricate wind turbines, plastics to make turbine blades, and insulate electricity cables, Not to mention being the feedstocks for all modern medicines. I'm not sure that these people realise that without oil a big portion of the world population would die, as without oil modern civilization would collapse. Without oil there would be no energy even from renewable source, agricultural output and food production and distribution wouldn't be possible. Humanity could go back to the preindustrial life, but most of the global population die in a global famine and civil war.

What some people fail to understand is the UK could be net-zero by midnight and it will make no difference to the climate crisis. The climate crisis will be resolved in parts of Asia and South America and Africa where people are truly poor and for whom saving the planet is not even on there agenda. I would love to know how we produce steel with renewables. Simply not practical at the present moment. So while I understand there is a climate issue the UK stopping exploration of its own oil and gas is simply ludicrous.

It happens to be that China stands for > 1/4 of the carbon emission globally and the Chinese population is approximately 1/6 of the world. Oil is not just used for energy! It is also used in all plastics, clothing, lubricants, perfumes, oil paints, etc... ending oil would theoretically revert us all back to stone age. Gas could be phased out but it's a byproduct of crude oil anyway (once it goes through the cat cracker at a refinery various gases are produced).

I just wish someone would show these people films of say Manchester or any other major city in the 1950s, 60, it would show how far we have come. Virtually every home, factory, etc was coal fired. When you got fog it wasn't white it was yellow. I remember going to school with a face mask on it was that bad. So please do not blame it on our generation, look how clean the air is now compared to then. That is how much has been done. The key thing I got from the interview is that the gentleman being interviewed is really quite combative and aggressive. Am I wrong to think I might not want him to be a Doctor I might need to see?
