Me thinking "Wasn't there quite a lot of pages they flicked over in this diary?", then hovering over the scroll bar and seeing you'd still be on it 17 minutes later had me buckling in for the ride.
He had " hello ladies " on his hat because the ship was called Batchelors delight. if you need more exclamation than that then i think you should speak to your dad lollllll
The injured dog reference comes from a proposal for calculating longitude. Sir Kenneth Digby proposed that a wounded dog be placed on each ship. A bandage or knife associated with the wound would remain at the home port before being plunged into the ‘Powder of Sympathy’ at midday. The effect of the powder would cause pain in the dog’s wound thousands of miles away causing it to howl and thus providing a ‘canine time signal’ from which the longitude could be determined on the ship.
William Ambrose Cowley is on Wikipedia under the name Ambrose Cowley. He named it Pepys Island after Samuel Pepys who was the Secretary to the Admiralty. Pepys is known for the diaries he wrote between 1660 - 1669. Fascinating video, thanks for sharing. Hope you're well 😀
I'm always happy you take the time to appreciate the many jokes in map men videos. I think you're the only one to notice on one video Jay's head turned in a reflection but he didn't move his head. Some are only on for a split second but you appreciate their craft.
I have been waiting for your reaction to this one. Knowing the Map Men's propensity for putting in hidden jokes and knowing that you read them all, I knew that this would be hilarious. It wouldn't surprise me if they have seen your reactions and thought "Right! We'll give him something to read."
If you look on the map above the mug on the desk between the two Map Men when they are in their office you can see the top of Scotland, and above it a large island that doesn't exist. Well, actually it does. Sort of. It was known about by the Ancient Greeks and Romans and was depicted on a map by a Dutch cartographer in 1539. However, nobody knew for sure where the island was, what shape it was and what size it was. So the cartographer guessed and got all three aspects wrong. The island is Thule (Tile on the map) and was deemed a place of great spiritual significance. So much so that the Nazis came to the conclusion that it was the origin island of the Aryans. Nutters. The thing is, just because something isn't there doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Somewhere else. Thule, being a Nordic term would likely be pronounced "Thula", and, was described in ancient times as being the most remote part of the British Isles. But instead of this "British Atlantis" being a large island directly North of Scotland, it seems that it was a much smaller island and one of the remotest of the Shetland Island chain. Foula. Which very much exists today. The phonetic similarity of Thula and Foula makes this seem likely and there are also ancient carved stones of some significance on the island. Suggesting that it may have been a place of pilgrimage. Interestingly, Wikipedia doesn't link Thule and Foula, but there are several other sources that do. Thought I'd mention this to keep within the general spirit of the video.
I can't believe that you left out their advert. Not only was it one of their best, it helps to push traffic to their affiliates and make them money which they've put lots of effort into earning.
I think You might have missed a couple of jokes within jokes with the island names. Tarquin Fin-tim-lin-bin-whin-bim-lim-bus-stop-F'tang-F'tang-Olé-Biscuit barrel is a Monty Python reference from the Election night special Sketch where Tarquin was the name of the 'Silly' candidate Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzellan bogen by the sea was a song by Max Bygraves, an English comedian, singer, actor and variety performer from the 1940's-1980's ( but you're forgiven as I don't think he was known in America).
You missed a joke. But probably not obvious to an American and it was blink and you'll miss it. The 'phantom' Island of Jersey, 1360 - present (English Channel). Not phantom. So I believe. Only have Bergerac to base my knowledge on and that's telly so could have been fake. 🤷♀️
BTW your thumbnail image with "Brazil is in Britain?" - should probably say "is in Ireland", as per the video, 'cos it's off the other side of Ireland.
I am disappointed that they’ve only gone and renamed the perfectly named lake disappointment after the aboriginal name who do these original aboriginal inhabitants think they are anyone would think they owned the bloody place or something.
I hate you. I love Map men but did not realise there was hidden stuff. That diary was really funny and now I have to watch them all again to find them 😅 If I discover new land it will be called Laserwolf
You’d think history lessons in English schools would be amazing. We watched the entirety of roots during my final hear and the teacher got fired for being a nonce. Nobody in England is taught English history anymore
You should look into the injured dog part. That was actually a serious proposal to solve the longitude problem. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powder_of_sympathy

I'm sad he didn't finish the Badger song.
JJ reading all the text gags frame by frame so we don't have to!😂
'Binder Twine'. It's twine for binding things up....and pronounced 'bye-nder'
He had " hello ladies " on his hat because the ship was called Batchelors delight. if you need more exclamation than that then i think you should speak to your dad lollllll
I'm exclaimed

I was just about to say his real name was William Ambrosia Cowley but was know as Ambrose Cowley 👍
He also buried his cheese during the Great Fire of London
You reading the whole diary was the best bit of this video. 😂

Love Map Men already. This is like having an American mate to watch it now I stumbled on your channel 😄 - an extra dimension to the humour.
Also would recommend trying 8 out of 10 cats does countdown. That's quite British humour
28:37 That went under the radar! Apparently Jersey is a phantom island!
BAD INFLUENCE DATA BLAST is a deep cut 'UK in the 90s' reference. Really made me laugh.
Love Jay Foreman... I wish he was real
Bachelors Delight , maybe that explains "hello ladies" on his hat

That diary is superb

Very funny ..glad you read it all.
Respect for diving into the Easter eggesque gags. I don't have to make the effort myself now.
I never noticed this is (I’m fairly certain) a Myst reference at 07:09

There may not be a Lake Disappointment anymore, but there's still a Mount Disappointment in Victoria.
When we watched this on Jay's channel we said you would read the whole diary.
It's like there's realky only one lake in the Lake District .
Because the Americans treated the native Hawaiians so much better!!
Nothing compared to the horrendous way the native Hawaiian leaders treated their own people and the peoples of nearby islands.
You that fragile? What’s your point? Lol
@@sg-yq8pm ok. So…?
Nothing compared to the way Americans treated the native American people?
howdy, look up count binface. you will not regret it!
23:40 I live in Margate it’s in kent south east england.
4:50 We also have Deception Bay.
I too had to take a bathroom break 😂
Imagine the urgency to have a bath whilst watching a video!
He should learn what a binder is and how to say it.
Back on track xx
Try 'binder twine', it's the twine that 'binds' things together...not the USA equivalent of a trash can.
here's William (aka Ambrose) Cowley: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambrose_Cowley
This island made quite big news here In UK this week

They ate Bainbridge on my Birthday!
Cowleys diary is unnecessary but like all Jay's easter eggs is amazing. I just wish Jay would post a lot more content.....
BTW your thumbnail image with "Brazil is in Britain?" - should probably say "is in Ireland", as per the video, 'cos it's off the other side of Ireland.

So the injured dog is a shaggy one.
Notification Squad
Don’t know if you know the channel Geography Now but Jay Foreman helps presents the UK one.
Google Ambrose Cowley for Peyps Island.
No mention of the last joke map with a rather large part of South America missing?
So Jersey is a phantom island huh? 😂
Bind-er twine not bin-der X
