@ amazing game. My seats are in 314 above our goalie twice. Seeing PK make some amazing saves and seeing the second period goals go past Ned was an amazing thing too. Crowd was on fire too.
Canes have been so successful these last 6+ seasons since the leadership change partially because of RBA's system but also because of their commitment to not being married to nostalgia with some of these players. I miss Trocheck and Skjei and many others...but at this point the Canes' front office has earned the trust that they'll do the best they can to put the best team on the ice without mortgaging the future. It may pay off with a cup one of these years. Or it may not but it has kept them at or near the top of the division for the vast majority of Brindamour's tenure.
One thing that folks didn't really take into account is that our core group of forwards was also young, and these guys getting a bit older and more experienced has only helped our team. We've seen a big step in player maturity in Necas, who is being much smarter with the puck and that's turning him into a really special player. And given how much the Canes tend to get better as the season progresses, at least historically, this could be an intriguing year as a Canes fan.
Necas also benefits from the departures, especially that of Guentzel, because now he has a much bigger role that he's been asking for over the past few seasons. And he's taken advantage of it so much.
@@nicksojka7457 also him and KK are really clicking, and then Robinson has gelled on their line because he’s quite fast (apologies if THG says as much in his video - haven’t had a chance to watch yet).
Ghost isn’t even bad defensively in Carolina’s system, he’s been fine. Also it might look like Walker hasn’t been all that good but the Ghost-Walker pairing has been UNBELIEVABLE so far… and that whole pairing is less $ than Skjei is making.
For sure man think of Dougie, Skjei, Burns, Orlov, there’s more but most D men struggle and take time to adjust to the Canes system. The fact that 4-26 has been so damn good already as a pairing says a lot. If it doesn’t happen this year I can see Walker exploding in points next year (happened to Burns and Dougie)
I was coming on here to talk about Walker too. Being paired with Ghost, he plays the more defensive defenseman. All 3 D pairs have a nice balance of offense and defense.
Maybe you mentioned it but I missed it but I think one consistent factor here is RBA. You're not going to be on this team if you don't listen to the guy. He commands a lot of respect but he also gives a lot of respect. The players want to have a chance to play with Burns and Aho and be coached by RBA. The team dynamic and expectations never change. Each player has a roll and are expected to perform. That's how players like Lorentz crack the NHL rosters because they have a huge great first start. I will say also that most of us fans expected a drop off so there was a lower expectation and a lot of hope at the start of the season. The first two games kind of proved our point but didn't suddenly a seven game win streak happens. Now there is super excitement within the fandom. And the final thing I don't think you mentioned was blonde Necas. He lost a golf bet and had to dye his hair blonde and since then he went on a tear and became the second star in the NHL last week and has continued his points production afterwards. Player to fan culture is also super high. For example on Halloween there was a fan who dressed up as Jarvis. Jarvis saw this and invited the fan to the center ice to do the storm surge and toss out candy to the other fans and then gave him his game used stick. This is why we love this team.
I think the real key is that they are still defensively sound...but without sacrificing offense, which has been a problem in the past. Usually our defense is great but then we can't seem to get goals when it matters. As much as I loved Brett Pesce, he was not a dynamic offensive threat like Ghost or even Sean Walker. The offense looks amazing this year, far more dynamic than in years past. This in no small part due to Necas deciding to go God mode, but everyone in the core is contributing and they just seem to have an extra step of speed that wasn't present last year. This is all based on the eye test - I couldn't tell you in the analytics back it up. But it sure feels that way. Edit: I posted the above comment before watching the whole video - he stated that their goals for are higher this year, while their goals against are lower. That more or less backs up my theory.
For Carolina, it's about taking that next step in the playoffs and making it all the way to the Cup Finals at least. They are perennial playoff contenders at this point, but have shown that while they can easily win a round or two, they seemingly run into a brick wall once they reach the Conference Finals.
Fantastic breakdown, Shannon. Kudos...I am delighted to say that my pessimism about CAR at the beginning of the season was misplaced. I WAS WRONG!...I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out how they pulled this off. All of the guys that you had in purple are not just window dressing. They are contributors. Even Walker, without a lot of points, has been an effective enabler. And the beautiful thing is that you still have the core - Aho, Svech, JStaal, Orlov, Burns (sign those guys already!) who are being complimented by this new mix. It's either a great luck scenario, or it's alchemic genious on Tulsky's part...This IS a better Canes team than last year - that recent West Coast road trip highlighted that. The only wild card seems to be - as it usually is - goaltending. But Kochetkov is fun to watch. His SV% sucks at the moment, but his record speaks for itself. He's an active and aggressive goalie, and even when he goofs up, I can usually see his thinking and give him a pass. Yep. Andersen's SV% is awesome, and he has played well in the games he's been in, but he is more of a reactive than proactive goaltender in my opinion. And he loves that putting green behind the net. Still...So we'll see come March if they still have the chops to slobberknock the Rangers, Panthers, and even the Bruins and Penguins, who have historically owned them, to finally bust through this first and second round wall they've been hitting since the Oughts...
People way overstated what we lost Jake was great but was only here for cup tea. the other guys lost were more bottom six but we kept leadership on those lines and rod gotten most out of new faces. Blue line was trickier but Orlov has stepped up Chat been doing things for past two years. We definitely traded defensive stability for more offense with Ghostisbehere but it’s worked out so far
Man what team would be stupid enough to trade Ghost AND two draft picks away to clear cap room? Oh, right. Mine. Life is hell. I knew Philly would do that so when the World Cup happened, I bought the NA23 jersey for Ghost. And I wore it on Tuesday when they played just to continue the torture. Love Ghost and want nothing but the best for him. Chuck Fletcher is a terrorist.
Following Steve Dangle has made me aware of how the cap can really stunt a team's growth and potential. The Leafs are constantly against the cap wirh no wiggle room at all. The easy route for a GM is agreeing to pay players and keep them around. The harder challenge is knowing when to say "no" and going out and finding those replacements at a better value to the team. Tulsky has done great in that regard so far, and I'm looking forward to what he comes up with for the trade deadline and playoff push.
Great video. As a long time fan I had gone into this year expecting a retool, but not a deep run. I've pleasantly surprised how well this group has clicked. I hope it's not just a fluke.
Simply laughing at the people that dont think this is sustainable. It is and next year we get Nikishin and more freed cap space. This train will keep rolling on.
Canes look way better now than what they had looked like this time last year, not just in results. I wouldn't even look too much into the pk% dip because the last two games they gifted the other teams 5-3 goals.
For the past several years, Eric Tulsky has been more or less a well-kept secret among Caniacs, even though he did keep getting interviews. Every time there was a headline about him getting interviewed, we held our breath before letting it go when we learn we kept him. Don Waddell was very much the driving force behind the turnaround after Dundon bought the team, in addition to building it into what it's been for the past few seasons. But now everyone is learning just how much of a wizard Tulsky is.
Eric Tulsky is a wizard. He’s been the brains of Carolina’s front office for years. Promoting him to GM was the best move they made in the offseason, among many great moves.
As a canes fan I was a little nervous going into this season but they have looked great. The front office is really good at seeing potential and Brind'Amour is a hell of a coach also Blake looks like he could be a star.
Every season the Canes have to begin their season on a huge road trip because of the NC State Fair. So they've done most of this on the road. Also, you failed to mention that they kept Necas because of not being able to sign Guentzel, and Necas has been on an absolute tear.
I for one appreciate this success despite the changes because not only are we still good, but people are less likely to bet on us to win the cup. Maybe we'll actually win this year now that people aren't picking us to win 😹😹
Like the analysis except for the money discussion. Carolina did Offer the same kind of money to Guentzel he just didn’t want to stay. As soon as that happened they then needed to move onto signing Necas long term and jarvis which cost a lot. They are still right there at the cap besides Fast’s money on LTIR.
I see no reason why this isn't sustainable. The Canes have been doing this for years, they'll let guys go when they're too pricey if they aren't part of the core, and they'll get someone for a lesser contract that performs just as well. People will call Dundon cheap, I think he is frugal (there is a difference), and the scouting department is top-notch. Plus, RBA is one of the best coaches in the league today, and players will commit crimes for him if he asked. Also, ESPN was the only outlet I recall to say the Canes would miss the playoffs, but honestly they've had an axe to grind with Carolina ever since Karmanos moved the team (they're based in CT, after all)
i'm guessing Carrier and Walker are more pickups for the playoffs which they haven't been good at finishing in the past maybe they will have the depth for it now
Many doubted them after the summer and I can't say I was very confident either, but I did feel that maybe the lowered expectations were going to be good for the Canes. Even though they lost some great players, they were still going to be a good team. Being skilled enough and playing with less pressure might be just what they needed, time will tell.
Pesce has been outstanding so far. That doesn't mean I'm confident that contract will age wonderfully, but he's a big difference maker even without any points. Canes didn't need Noesen but ofc nobody would argue that he isn't well worth his contract.
Ghost has always been good and he’s not even bad defensively. Walker has always been under the radar player even in LA and people really thought he was a “throw in” in that trade. I can’t believe the flyers basically paid Arizona to take ghost, utterly ridiculous…. And yes this is coming from a Philly fan.
Thank you for respecting that little team in Raleigh. Ill be in the crowd tonight with some extra points to watch for thanks yo you.
Boy, what a win. I’m sure you had a great time!

I wonder what their PK percentage would be without all those 5 on 3s
@@andrewtormanen Yeah,4 5v3s in 3 games and one was just shy of 2 min and another the full 2 min. Crazy.

As long as Rod is our head coach, we’re making the playoffs. Hopefully that translates to a cup win while we have this awesome core.

its also a kickass name for a D pair
You really have to thank the abolished Arizona Coyotes organization for turning Ghost into a top 4 defence-man right now.
Our PK is worse because we’ve had two 5-3 goals go in off weird redirects off Slavin and another 5-3 goal. 5-4 we are still elite
I swear half the time we take a penalty it either becomes a 5 on 3 or it’s an extended pk
Mannnnn Eric Tulsky was really cooking on a budget this past off-season.
Blake makes Drury so good and vice versa essentially what Noeson was doing on this team
Agreed, I'm happy Noesen found his late blooming skills, but Blake is an upgrade skill-wise. He just needs a little more ice time imo.
Gotta love a solo canes video
