This is a very informative video. I have tried darts before, but your method is much easier and more precise. Thank you for posting. I happened upon this video after watching the one about adding sleeves to a T-shirt. You have inspired me. Thank you.
My daughter just bought a gorgeous thrifted purple satin gown to wear to her cousin's formal winter wedding. It is a little big on her and we'll be using these tips to get a good fit. And yes, a video on tailoring with a waist seam would be appreciated! thank you!
Hi Anastasia! I just want to say thank you for your videos. They are so educational. You really take your time explaining everything and my dyslexic brain really thanks you. I can’t wait to see what else you have in store! ❤
Thank you Anastasia! I did have a go at taking in a thrifted dress using back darts and I was pleased with the result, and even more so now, seeing your tutorial, that I had done most of it right. The only thing I didn’t know about was releasing the dart by clipping into it and cutting off the excess material. Great tutorial. I always look forward to watching your channel. I have learned so much from you.
I have been adding darts to a dress since the day before yesterday and just realized that I need to lengthen the rear darts another 3 1/2 inches upward for more shape and style. My darts extend From my hips up beyond my waist 🎯 . So far it has made a world of difference. My dress went from Boxie to shapely.
Hello Anastasia, I really appreciate your taking time to make these videos for us. If you haven't made one, I'd love to see how you make a regular fit dress into a sort of "flowing" dress. I would imagine it's just a matter of adding fabric to the skirt part, right ? But, would you need to add pleats into it or not ? TYSM for sharing your techniques and knowledge with us. Take care, and, love your channel. Thanks, either way. 😉👍😻
Love this video, thanks for sharing. I have inserted darts in several tops, have just done it by eye, this will be so much better, especially as I do have a dress form. Would also love to see tailoring with a waist seem. Thanks
Love this video. I have a a very broad back/shoulders and a short waist. I love "sheath" dresses with front and back darts, but they never fit. I beg you to consider doing a video on how to modify a sheath dress for girls like me!
Watch ALL your vids❤ I have this denim dress that has 2 side seams. I am not sure what the best way is so take it in? Do you suggest darts or removing fabric?
Great video, I have a dress in mind for this alteration but I don't have a dress form and I'm not really sure how I could do it on myself. Can I put the dress on backwards? Would that work?
It would probably work as a preliminary step, then put it back on frontwards and see how it looks, then adjust if needed. You can also pull some of the extra out at the side seams, which is easier to do on yourself.
Trying it on backwards won't work for most people - our fronts and backs are pretty different shapes. Probably best to either find a friend to help or to pinch and feel about how much you think you need to take in with it on, then pin it and try it on. You can make adjustments from there depending on if it's too loose or tight still. It's just less direct.
I'm 5 feet tall. Please could you do sewing tutorials for people like me who like fitted clothing. I'm also 57 yrs old. But l love to wear cool funky clothes. I know l could buy lots more thrifted clothes and alter them to look great on me. Instead of looking like I'm wearing oversized clothing. ❤❤❤❤
I think she said in the video she has other videos on taking in stuff via side seams as well. This video is focused on the single technique, which makes sense because it's easier to learn things one thing at a time.
Yes you can do that and you will also have to re shape your armholes and your sleeve. So by just adding the darts you will not be changing the fit of your armhole. It really depends on how much you need to take in and how the garment was made. You can defiantly do both or just one method.
I'd be interested in seeing how to add darts on a dress with a waistband, but I'm bottom heavy so I only need it taken in above the waist. Is that possible?
I would like to try this on a boxy shirt dress. The difference is that it has a pleat in the center back at the yoke seam. How do I work with that? Perhaps I should just put in a back seam…
What do I do if your waist is bigger than your bust and hips? I'm designing a shirt for some one but I am so confused about how to do the darts backwards or what i dont know lol please help
It is not always an option on a garment and you can make it unbalanced by doing that depending on how much you need to take it in. This will actually give you shape in the back and not just at the sides. If you take it in at the s.s you will also need to mess with altering the sleeve and armhole.
If you only take in the side seams or even just the back seam, it will end up bunchy and weird in other areas. Darts are the best way to effectively take a garment in so to ensure the garment stays even all around. However darts are surprisingly difficult to do which is why I'm watching this tutorial 😂
This was exactly what I was looking for to fix a dress I started without a pattern. However, this dress has no center seam. It was cut out following this tutorial th-cam.com/video/ZVXBGODIvl4/w-d-xo.html And then I added gatherers to the center front right under bust. Because I gathered the front, the back looks too large, so I was trying to figure out how to make the dart myself and your video saved the day. FWIW I used stretch jersey (can add link in a minute) so no worries about getting in the garment. Is there anything i should do differently because I lack a center back seam? I just found the halfway point between the side seams across the back and used an imaginary center seam. I’m still working on it, so will that work?
Yes. Would like to see a video on tailoring with a waist seam. This video was very helpful!

I have this denim dress that has 2 side seams. I am not sure what the best way is so take it in? Do you suggest darts or removing fabric?
Thank you. This was easy to understand. Can I make the same kinds of darts in the front of the dress instead, or in addition to the back?
You can make them in the front or the side or anywhere really.
I loved this video! Thank you 😊
Your work is beautiful
I wouldn't mind seeing a video discussing how much ease to leave in various parts of a garment, assuming such a subject can even be summarized.
Me, too. I struggle with this.
Great suggestion. I will add it do the list. It really depends on how you like your clothes to fit. I generally go for no ease or a very small amount.
Magical thank you
Thank you for this very clear instruction. QUESTION: can I add back darts to a linen dress cut on the bias (no back seam)?
Yes you can! but be careful you do not pull it when you sew it. You might want to use seam tape on the dart stitching.
thank you!
I would like to see a video on how you would approach replicating a favorite garment without taking it apart.
I would like to see a video with a tailored waist seam

If you measure yourself and then measure the garment you can pin up the extra through the darts and try it on and then adjust from there.
I'm 5 feet tall.

I would have distributed some of the fullness to the side seams instead of huge darts.
I would agree - divide it into four instead of two.

I've been wanting to amend a vintage dress, that's too bulky up top, but the waist fits. Had it a few years, but don't know how.
What dress form do you use please?
Some of them are PGM or from Roxy mannequin
How would you address a lining in a dress that you want to take in? Would you just sew the dart through both layers or is that a disaster?
What do I do if your waist is bigger than your bust and hips? I'm designing a shirt for some one but I am so confused about how to do the darts backwards or what i dont know lol please help
The dart is an intake of fabric to create shape so shape the dart around the clients body.
Just curious, why wouldn't you just take in the side seams?
It is not always an option on a garment and you can make it unbalanced by doing that depending on how much you need to take it in. This will actually give you shape in the back and not just at the sides. If you take it in at the s.s you will also need to mess with altering the sleeve and armhole.

nooo what did you do with the darts in the end i wanted to see.
aka how did you "clean up" the edges

@@AdaptiveHarmony you don’t need a center seam. Just keep it balanced.
