    Quick tip from a factory worker: What you've got there is *closed cell foam.* Closed cell foams are rigid, because the cells are... closed.
    *Open cell foams* are squishy. THEY would uptake resin, the same way they would uptake ANY liquid. So if you want to give a foam/resin project a bash: *open cell foam.*

    Hey Nick, don't know if anyone else mentioned it it or not but, foam has different characteristics. One being Foam comes open cell and closed cell type as an example. I think you used closed cell foam, that is why the resin would not penetrate the foam ? How ever I think if you use open cell foam the resin would penetrate the foam but, it might eat them foam up and dissolve the foam into the resin giving you a soup of color instead of foam blocks as intended ? would love to see you give a go again with that in mind. Thanks you for another great video !!! hope to see a follow up soon ?

    That's a closed cell non-absorbent type foam. Meaning it's made with bubbles that make up each of the tiny pockets. Since those bubbles are fully closed the resin can't seep into it. You need a more open cell type foam. Something more similar to a sponge so the resin can penetrate it.

    The texture of the resin that you pulled off the foam is really, really cool. You should see if there are any clay artists that would be interested in using those pieces for their own art. I have read articles about artists who take "molds" of any interesting textures they encounter, which they incorporate into their projects.
    So, in addition to being an incredible artist yourself, you could also help other incredible artists with their art form.

    The first thing I thought when I saw the black, yellow and pink foam combination, I thought… that looks like allsorts liquorishe! (If that’s how you spell it) and then you said it yourself. It might be a nice thing for a next project, to replicate the candy in a huge format. Or make a bowl with the allsorts cast in resin. Have a nice day, greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱

    it's foam....its not meant to absorb liquids. you should try using a SPONGE...sponges are an absorbent material...go make that licorice tower vase.

    that's what I like about your channel, Nick, you're like Bob Ross, you don't make mistakes, you have happy accidents. I've never seen you "fail" at a project, just take it in a different direction.

    sorry it didn't work out! It is, unfortunately, a "closed cell" foam, (a sponge is an "open cell" foam) so in order to have ANY chance of working you'd have to use the slowest epoxy you've got and a vacuum chamber run to full vacuum and released in pulses to try and brute force the resin into the foam... and I'd still only give that a 15-20% chance of success...
    Idea 1: take the epoxy "skins" and layer thin, metallic colored epoxy on to just fill the grooves and highlight the pattern, then back fill that with a 3rd color of epoxy.
    Idea 2: foam chips. just mangle the foam into little chunks that will be suspended in resin, making sure that 60%+ by volume is resin. This one couldn't be turned so you'd want to mold the object you want.
    Keep on it!

    Nick make a butter churn, because what’re I’m from. Because of all chemicals preservatives that the government are allowing them to do.
    Could you make a butter churn and add your personal touch to it. I would buy it from you.
    Thank you, plus I really did love the vase.

    Nick.. this is awesome. I never knew you were Jamiroquai's hatmaker 🧐
    He will be happy you made this for him 😉
    Was nice to watch again though. Not all our projects turn out perfect. And I think it's good to show that as well.
    I have a vase filled with resin (will air on my TH-cam channel tonight) but, eventually it leaked. But I saw that after editing the video. Luckily for me it stayed on the silicone mat.

    Hmm closed cell foam not so good for this. Open cell however could do.....and maybe vac chamber. Yes I know ....small....but it might work.

    I’m just guessing here,, but isn’t there a difference in the type of pressure pots, would this work if you used the type they use to stabilise wood? Like how they make those colourful wood burl knife scale blanks??? If it can penetrate wood, must be able to get through that foam?? Surely

    To make this foam project work, you would need a vacuum chamber. After each pour, vacuum until bubbles stop. I believe it could be awesome. I always enjoy observing your creative expression.

    I have a question for you, I just Googled which hand to wear wedding ring and the UK people say the left hand, US, left hand, other places right hand. You are wearing a ring on your right hand that looks like a wedding band???

    What, if you try to use cactus juice? Put this foam in a vacuum chamber, after this, in the oven. Perhaps this should work.

    Very nice vase, Nick! Always enjoy these projects. Cheers!
    Just a thought... how about soaking each pad individually in resin and drop it into a vacuum chamber to help it absorb the resin? Maybe it could be turned, then?

  • @RoseGirlBeauty
    @RoseGirlBeauty 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nick….this is made from the same material as pool noodles, which are dense foam and waterproof. The foam cells don’t allow anything in, which is the point. But, have you tried packing peanuts? They’re made of styrofoam, which isn’t as dense.

  • @by14996
    @by14996 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nick, I think your first idea could have worked for this one. What was blocking the resin from penetrating was Air that was 'trapped' inside the foam. What you needed to do was get it out using the pressure pot while the foam was submerged fully in resin. So put both slow set resin and foam in the pressure pot, and then suck out the air as normal. Once you take the seal back off the pot, the resin will rush in (be 'pushed' into) the foam. Maybe do a couple times like that to make sure you got 100% penetration and that should do it. You could try some small washing up sponges at first as a simple test to see how it fairs, but it should work.... Nice project either way though, don't get me wrong!! :)

    Hay Nick, been following you for a while now and I got to say, keep on spinning .... Insert clip of Murdock hanging on a rotor blade .... I was wondering if you drilled some holes into the shadowfoam before stacking them then they should allow the resin to act like internal support. Could work, could not, but it might be a fun experiment. Then while you're at it, stack them at an angle, I did this on a recent project using plywood and the pattern looks amazing. I even went a step further and stacked it up, cut it length wise, turned the parts around and reglued it, worked even better. I just downloaded the makers central app and I'll add the projects there if you want to have a look. Cheers, stay funckadelic!
