This needs to be said right now.
Capcom Aladdin is too damn underrated.

Funfact: The guy behind Resident Evil, Shinji Mikami, worked on the SNES version of Aladdin. And he prefers the Genesis version.

Keep it up, man! It's so easy to rant and bring out all the bad things about games, comics, movies... I'm glad to see someone trying to take it in the other direction, without losing a keen critical eye:)

I wouldn't call Aladdin for Genesis "difficult" in the traditional sense, but I can see how someone could reach that conclusion. Derek didn't detail the problems he has with Aladdin Genesis, but i'm guessing he's referring to its messy controls. As seen from his other videos, he enjoys a good challenge and has a low tolerance for complaints about fair difficulty (Megaman 9). But he's also aware of the difference between refined and polished difficulty, and a game where you have to fight the controls. You CAN adjust to the controls in Aladdin, but it takes some getting used to. Also hit detection for both attacking and jumping on platforms is also rather unpolished in comparison to SNES. Jumping also feels heavy. This affects other Virgin games as well. And non-Virgin games of that era like Mickey Mania, Cold Shadow and Earthworm Jim. I'm not saying they're bad games (far from it), but they do lack the level of polish in true top shelf 2D platformers.
And despite the wonderful sprite detail from Disney's own animation studio, from a gameplay perspective they take too much screen space up and it can be difficult to see attacks coming at you from different angles and see distant platforms. The level of detail an animation is unquestionably fantastic from a visual perspective, but it was too ahead of its time given resolution constraints of the 16 bit console era.
I also agree with Derek that Capcom's style of gameplay is better suited to Aladdin. Only very briefly in the movie does Aladdin use a sword, for one split second when he's fighting Jafar's snake form and stabs him. But far more commonly he's seen running and jumping around rooftops in an acrobatic sense. Capcom's version and its acrobatic platforming nails Aladdin's style. It's an easier game than the Genesis version, but it has a level of polish that I feel the Genesis version lacks. And it's far more faithful in capturing and recreating the spirit of the movie as well.

granvillimus yeah I agree 100 percent, it's a little hard to use the sword, but still I got to almost the end of the game my first try because they through so many extra lives at you

The genesis version of Alladin has a difficulty setting in the options menu. The easier the difficulty the more lives you have at the start, enemy's take only one hit to kill and you have more apples at the start.

A very fun, insightful and engaging mini-series you made here. I salute you, sir!
Someday I'd like to see you look at the Disney/Sega and Disney/Virgin games in greater detail, as I think they're all worth talking about. These days, outside of really notorious cases like Fantasia, they tend to get overshadowed by the Capcom games so most Internet reviewers don't talk about them. I for one would love to see you talk about them.

  • @Ubersnuber
    @Ubersnuber 15 ปีที่แล้ว

Heh, I was kind of surprised when you started to talk about the Magical Quest game for the SNES. I really thought this would be nostalgia gold for you, so I was like "what the..." when you started hammering it. But you explained why, and it makes sense.
    Thanks for another good video!
    Job well done ^_^

SEGA's World of Illusion is still my favourite Mickey-themed game, despite being way too short and easy. It perfectly captures the atmosphere of the old Disney shorts; something that can't be said about Capcom's Magical Quest series, which feels more like the TV cartoon serials.

Classic games that come to mind which I remember playing when I was little that you mentioned in this: Magical Quest 1, Lion King & Aladdin (snes), D&D arcade
Nice, NICE work. And I have to agree that the platforming version of Aladdin seemed more suitable. Ironically, I was just playing the HD Prince of Persia Classic on PS3, and that came to mind when you mentioned the platforming elements!

Speaking of great license games by Capcom, probably one of my most favorite games of all time ever is Gregory Horror Show for the ps2, which is a truly amazing 'spooky' game I'm sure you would love, Derek. Else, another great Capcom game I feel is heavily underrated is Under The Skin, which is another great wacky and creative competition game you may enjoy. But seriously, highly recommend Gregory Horror Show

Even though there were a couple levels that we could only beat through the use of cheat codes (There was a whole laundry list of cheat codes that could be used for that game), it was a lot of fun, the music was great, and it had plenty of humor, especially with the fat knife throwing guards whose pants fall down often when hit by projectiles.

Circus Mystery on Genesis was more or less the same. The only major difference I noticed (besides less colors and a slight drop in quality in the music) was in the haunted house level, the rotating room wasn't present. Instead it was a room that required the use of the cowboy outfits to make these really long jumps.

it's kinda funny when you talk about the Magical Quest games. I mean I never got to play them as a kid either, but I still found them pretty fun despite a few short comings (that dash button would've made a hell of a difference xP).
Even though they're not the most fast paced games, they had a few unique, fun quirks to it, especially the costumes. Funny you mentioned the grappling hook cuz, I never really had a problem with it. xD

Even though I'm a huge SEGA fan, I agree with what you said about the SNES version of Aladdin. The gameplay was alot more suitable. I remember my brother rented the Genesis version when I was a kid, and I played it and I really couldn't see what all the fuss was about. I didn't get to play the SNES version until years later, but I enjoyed it alot more. And I love Capcom's rendition of A Whole New World in the game.

I LOVED Aladdin for SNES, it was hard, but not too hard. The Magical Quest for SNES is one of my favorite Disney games of all time. It had flaws for sure, but I think you were being a bit too hard on it. The graphics were beautiful, and the costume system was tons of fun. As for Ducktales, well, when Ducktales Remastered comes out, I guarantee I will be crying tears of joy. At the end of the day though, these are your opinions and I respect them.
