Ultimate Blue Jay Squeaky Gate Call

- Finally, after hearing this call ring through the mountains of North Carolina all these years I captured clear video of a Blue Jay making their legendary squeaky gate, rusty pump handle or rusty swing set or close line call - if you have blue jays you know what I mean. What is interesting is I have a lot of blue jays in Florida and I have never heard this call in there before.
This is late April 2024 when Jay family groups should be broken up into mating pairs and going low profile to raise their broods so I'm not sure what's going on here with four Jays high in the top of a newly blooming tree - 3 of them patiently listening and watching. By the time I got my camera on a tripod and found the right blue jay to focus on it had been calling continuously for 5 minutes and continued calling for 5 more minutes. So 10 minutes of continuous squeaky gate call delivered with full body involvement - which looks kind of exhausting. You can also hear some blue jays in the distance also making the pump handle call. This particular call probably travels the greatest distance in the valley.

Absolutely beautiful ❤. Thank you so much for your wonderful birds presentation. Super well done 👏✔.. Mark Bensette Aux Bois 🇨🇦.
We have a forest full of noisy Jays. They make all kinds of sounds. They even imitate other sounds.
If you hear a strange new sound in the forest I always suspect a Jay or crow first. BB
Yes! they can sound just like a hawk
They fool me all the time by doing the hawk call!
In Omaha, the blue jays make a similar (yet distinctly different) "squeaky pump" call. Their little hops as throw their whole body into it are so funny! Not necessary though, since I saw one make it while flying. When I first heard this call shortly after moving to Omaha, I truly thought it was an old rusty bike horn. The jays in my yard seem to make this call when they're enthusiastic about something - I hear it a lot when they spot the feeder newly full of peanuts. They hop up and down on the pergola as they squeak. So cute 🥰
The Jay was excited and did this for 10 minutes which was great, he even made the call rapidly as he was flying away. The other Jays just watched "him" BB
This is awesome footage!! I didn't know that was a blue Jay... beautiful 🥰🙏🤗💚🥰
Beautiful Bird's 😊😊😊
Yes they are!
@@MyBackyardBirding 🙂
I love how its feet leave the branch when it makes the call🤣
Yeah, that's what I'm hearing! Like someone is swinging on a swingset next door, except there is no swingset next door.
Here in Eastern Ontario the Jays have a similar call except the tone is a bit different.
They do this on the balcony in SW Florida! Sometimes two at a time. It’s soo cute
sounds like hes both imitating AND saying "squeaky gate"!
Thank you! I have indeed called this "the old swing-set" and it was great to watch the full set of calls. Quite full of energy!
Thanks, heard it for years but finally got a good long video probably because the tree top had not leafed out yet! BB
I also have never heard this call before from tons of jays in Western PA, very cool sound.
It seems to be regional, I have never heard it from the Jay family in the Florida Backyard but is the most common call in NC! BB
Similarly, the Anna's Hummingbird calls remind me of a squeaky fanbelt on a car.
Incredible song
I've heard the cash before but never saw the dance ❤😊
Thank you.
The dance and the long duration is really fascinating - what could it be trying to communicate? BB
I've noticed that every "tribe" of blue jays have their own spin on this squeaky gate call. Like the blue jays in my neighborhood have their version of this call while another population down the street from me sounds different. I suppose the squeaky gate call would be the blue jay's song.
I have blue jays here in CO (first time I ever saw one was here) I have heard the rusty pump handle type sound many times but it sounds different than in this video, which is weird!
Haha this is awesome great footage!! I was really surprised the other day, I don’t usually see blue jays in my backyard too much, they’ll pass by and have food from my feeders sometimes but it’s mostly the cardinal pair and doves that eat in my backyard. Anyway I heard crazy sounds so I looked out the windows and 10 bluejays showed up the other day ! It was crazy. Thanks for sharing !
Yes, I finally got a clear long video of this call. Once the trees leaf out I hardly ever see them! BB
Love this! It's amusing how it bounces while making it. Also, IMO grackles can make squeaky wheel sounds. 🙂
Wow! It DOES sound like a squeaky gate or water pump handle.
I don't have blue jays here, but we do have stellar jays, same family but different birds. Their call is different than this, but I have heard something similar from a stellar jay that was on my deck railing one morning.
There are regional variations, but in Florida I have never heard it from my Jay family group. BB
@@MyBackyardBirding it's a really interesting noise.
When I was young, I called it the squeaky clothes line bird. There was a time when everybody had a clothesline.
I've heard it called that as well! BB
Sounds like we need some oil😅
I have heard this call in NC and AL.
Yes, this was western NC but I've never heard it in Florida. BB
Fascinating behavior! Very curious to know what's behind it. It's very energy-intensive, so it must be important. By the way, aren't the jays in Florida a different subspecies to the ones in North Carolina?
There is a Florida Scrub Jay endemic to Florida, but we have plenty of the traditional Blue Jays as well. BB
@@MyBackyardBirding I looked it up -- I was thinking of Cyanocitta cristata semplei, a subspecies that's a bit smaller than the others. Looks like it's just in south Florida.
Bachelor Jays that didn’t find a mate.
He's in an excited state about something! BB
