It was a privilege to be a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony 42 years ago, and they are sounding marvelous.

You played under Steinberg? I think he’s
      unjustly forgotten.

Thanks for posting this! Such a monumental almost emotionally dangerous work. Performed with conviction here.

In the 2022 Gramophone Magazine Top 10 Orchestras ranking, Pittsburgh is the only American orchestra on the list.

Under Honeck, this orchestra sound Vienna tones mixed up with American tones, it is very fantastic indeed.

The musicians themselves would sound no different than under any other conductor. It's all in the interpretation.

Great musicians! The recording was unfortunately all over the place spot-lighting instruments and choppy levels throughout. There was a big shift in levels about 1/3 through the playback. Maybe the Conductor didn't review this recording with the sound engineer before posting on TH-cam?

    Try starting here:
    th-cam.com/video/74849cA1VmE/w-d-xo.html
The last two movements are magnificent. There were audio problems earlier, so don't judge the performance or conducting on the start.
This is a very strange recording because the beginning is faulty, but the end is not. There was some kind of problem, and it some how got ironed out by the 3rd movement, which I started with. So I had no idea there was a problem until I restarted at mvt 1. That seems to be the reason for a total disagreement about the sound. How or why things seem to be straightened out by mvt 2 I have no idea, but the last two movements are incredible, and I would by him doing a recording of this in a heartbeat.

Lucerne hall can not embrace metal instruments of this orchestra (it is magnificent in fact). Maybe the echo effect is a bit too much in the hall.

The miking is so off. I am not sure why this sounds so strange. The performance is fabulous. This is a superb hall. But whoever recorded this performance forgot some button.

Yeah, I don’t get it either. This is a TH-cam video. If they want the best possible sound they should listen to Honeck’s recording of this work on the Reference Recordings label. And the sound in this video is fine. I was never distracted by it. Maybe they have lousy speakers or headphones.

Вот что бывает, когда задумка дирижера непосильна для оркестра такого уровня. Это фестивальный оркестр, им бы «шарманкой» играть.
