Watching Yanwan leave Yunche for the second time is so frustrating. I understand why she would want to get out of her situation asap, anyone would. If the choice was between staying in her abusive environment or becoming a concubine, I’d understand her choice, but she’s literally been OFFERED a third choice - to marry Yunche. You’re absolutely right. The way she uses Yunche’s affection but discards him everyone time she has an opportunity sucks. Her entitlement over Yunche is a running theme throughout this entire show and this isn’t even the worst of it.

    • @Moonstonemoonlight

And the worst part is because of her low background and being Jia’s former servant she continues to be bullied senseless…. Homegirl made the wrong choice (but she clearly didn’t love Ling Yunche sincerely in the first place soo it’s better for him)

      @its99pm ปีที่แล้ว +15

The only good thing about Yanwan's treatment of Yunche is that she walks herself away from him and right down the flaming road to hell. She chooses her own doom, and ultimately leads an empty life that never brings her happiness or love.

Also this it were Jia starts to lose her touch a bit and it only gets worse from here which was disappointing because she really is the best antagonist of the show but as time when she lost her poker face and started to wear her emotions on her sleeve she became so cocky and thought no one could defeat her and it could’ve remained that if the power didn’t go to her head.

I mourn the original, clever Jia as well, and wish she'd stayed that way until finally getting caught in a big unveiling. But I guess then her end would have been too similar to Yanwan's.

Honestly, I never got the massive amount of hate Yanwan has gotten over the years compared to Jia or the Empress. Yanwan was nearly bullied to death for YEARS! It makes her very sympathetic and not a simple black and white character compared to others. It makes her feel more real. If anyone is to blame for Yanwan it is honestly Hailan for setting her up so badly against Chun. Homegirl was happy to be a maid to first prince and earn her way to the top. She learned playing by the rules gets you no where as so many women have to scheme and fight to survive in the harem.
Than the empress being so childish. Like if you’re going to be evil at least own it girl.

    • @its99pm
      @its99pm ปีที่แล้ว +15

I think I'd have more sympathy for Yanwan if she was more like book!Yanwan. If she herself made the decision to haul herself out of Jia's torture pit and SHE approached the eunuch, I'd respect that. But the show repeatedly has her make a choice and then whimper and cry over how it backfired on her. She just comes off as a whiny baby who never ever learns to take accountability for the messes she herself creates. If she had more backbone and less blabbering sobbing-fits, I'd like her a lot more. (I absolutely love both Mei and Hailan, and they both do a lot of bad things - it's the simpering nothing-is-ever-my-fault that I hate)
tl;dr I think a better way to say it is that show!Yanwan doesn't have satisfying character growth (like how Hailan goes from whimpering victim to absolute Boss Babe throughout the show). She's stuck in a pattern of denying accountability, and I hate that both in characters & real life people :P lol

I hated Yanwen from the moment I saw her. And her ending here is well deserved. However, in Story of Yangxi Palace or Legend of YingLuo, it's Consort Xian/Ruyi who becomes the villain.
That said, I get her choice. She was being tortured and abused for no reason. She needed a way out. However, her cold actions and careless way she leaves people who are of no use to her (FORSHADOWING) is what makes me wonder if she is truly a sociopath or a girl desprate for power.

YanWan is neither evil nor the antagonist of the series.
1 - The option of leaving the palace and marrying Ling Yunche is unfeasible and impossible.
From the beginning, when Ling Yunche gives the ring to YanWan she is happy, she is grateful, sincere and genuinely in love with him. But she reminds Ling Yunche that her mother will never accept her engagement.
Later, when she talks to Chunchan (her coworker), she tells him that every time she brings money home, her brother spends it right away.
YanWan's scenario is not so simple and easy to say: "Well, let her get married and end the problems."
She has a brother who spends the money she gets and a mother who doesn't care about her at all, who doesn't allow her to love freely under pain of being "disowned." A mother who cares about her son and not her daughter.
2 - Getting out of Jia's control was also impossible.
He waited three years, three years enduring abuse, not only from his mistress, he also endured abuse from the other servants.
Ruyi stopped caring about YanWan when he found out that she had tried to "seduce" the Emperor.
Ruyi never cared about YanWan's family background.
    YanWan's situation was desperate.
When she had stopped being useful she would surely have had the same end as many other characters.
The only viable option was to enter the harem.
She is sincere with Ling Yunche, their relationship both inside and outside the palace had no future or sense.
Ling Yunche had only Ruyi's support and patronage, thus, he was completely dependent on Ruyi's connections.
By himself, Ling Yunche is only a guard, he can ascend or descend in position, but he will always be a palace guard.
He doesn't have the power to protect YanWan.
Where has he been these three years?
When Ling Yunche sees the bruises, she shies away from him in fear.
YanWan is treated badly, physically and mentally abused, given the worst food, the worst clothes, the worst jobs, constantly humiliated, ridiculed and all this for years, without Ling Yunche doing anything.
(Simply why he can't protect her).
He can't confront the harem ladies, he can't confront his girlfriend's superiors.
In short: He can only wait, remain silent and depend on Ruyi to produce a miracle.
It seems that YanWan - Ling Yunche's relationship only concerns her decisions and not his.

I just had a skim through the video and I can’t find a single instance where I called her evil or the antagonist of the series? Only that I don’t like her.
Your points are perfectly valid. Especially the fact that she went through those years of literal torture. I feel like I understated just how horrible her life would have been those 3 long years. I think in the end I would make the same decision (marrying the emperor). I would want to rely on myself, whether that ends in glory or failure I would rather it be my own choices that get me there, not a guard who could not even get me out of that horrible situation.
I’m not criticizing her choice to marry the Emperor so much; I’m criticizing her treatment of YunChe.
1: I can totally understand what you’re saying about YanWan’s family, but if it was truly impossible between them then why was Yanwan even bothering to be with YunChe? As I mentioned in the video, she was *accepting his money* and was fully aware that YunChe was asking for favors so they could be granted a marriage. Why let that go on if she was determined not to marry him? Because it served her well at the time.
It is understandable to use people when you feel they can be of use to you, but it’s also a shitty thing to do.
2: Again, after the torture, I 100000% understand her choosing to enter the harem. You’re forgetting though that Yanwan was like this even before the torture.
Remember when she broke up with YunChe when she first wanted to get the Emperor’s attention (before she even met Jia)? She had these plans way before the torture started. When that failed (Because Chun kicked her out of her palace), she went crying back to YunChe saying it was a mistake to leave him.
Again, is it *understandable* for her to use him like that? Sure. Still shitty though.
If she knew that (like you said) she couldn’t rely on him, and she didn’t want to marry a guard, all she had to do was leave him alone. He wasn’t begging her to take him back, she was the one who asked him to take her back. And that was all before the torture. She didn’t need him to survive, she wanted him to make her life easier.
I get that it’s super easy to judge when you’re not living that life, but I mean she is objectively quite manipulative and using. But I never called (or thought of her as) evil, and she doesn’t become the antagonist of the story until later in the story when her actions become truly unconscionable .

@@dramarecaps4217 I don't mean that you called her "antagonist" or "evil." I mean the “fandom” in general tends to consider YanWan as “evil” or “heartless”.
What is not in doubt is that YanWan is in love with Ling Yunche at the beginning and throughout the rest of the series she also has an interest in Ling Yunche.
Even the first "private" conversation with the Emperor I don't see as something momentous. It's Hailan who gives it too much importance.
Hailan talks to Consort Chun and they both agree to expel YanWan from the palace, simply for interacting with the Emperor just once.
She didn't have A'Ruo's nastiness. He wasn't such a dangerous threat to deserve that punishment.
YanWan had intended to enter the harem ever since that conversation with the Emperor.
He certainly left Ling Yunch in the dark and stood him up.
Did he do it maliciously? I don't believe it. I just think that she didn't know how to handle the situation or her relationship with Ling Yunche.
YanWan at the beginning of the series is a clumsy, innocent, clueless and above all transparent character.
She accidentally breaks the Emperor's vase, she doesn't know how to cook simple dishes, she is very exaggerated, she doesn't know how to relate to the other members of the harem.
I think (it's a personal opinion) that there is a misunderstanding between YanWan and Ling Yunche the second time they come back together.
I think her apology for leaving him refers to "leaving him without any convincing explanation." And he interprets that apology as her wanting to return to her old relationship.
It's a little sad that YanWan is not understood, her background, her fears, her insecurities, her weaknesses. At first she did not seek to hurt anyone. But it was clear that someone was going to suffer.
Although I insist, anyway, Ling Yunche also misunderstood YanWan the second time they came back. She just wanted to have his friendship, not a "formal" relationship with him.
We see another example in the relationship between the eunuch Lin Yu and Suoxin. She is not sincere or clear with Lin Yu, she takes advantage of her good heart, accepts her gifts, even gives her some hope using her hair clip, she is much more ambiguous than YanWan.
But I don't think she (Suoxin) is a bad person, she's just too shy to confront Lin Yu. Although her actions seen from another perspective can be misinterpreted.
Thanks anyway for responding to my comment!! I am very grateful.
Please keep uploading videos!! It shows that you put all your heart and effort into them.

In This arc there scenes about ruyi I feel they should have kept
When she and emperor were sick and then she goes to check on the emperor and the empress brush her off souxin say they should do something but ruyi say they can't because it would upset empress dowager because she doesn't like it when someone take all the favor after hui death emperor barely visited anyone other than ruyi and the empress dowager now is ruyi biggest supporter you get the idea they should have kept even though it was short it show more of ruyi intelligence and personality
The other scene was fun to read 😁 while physically can't harm empress because it's risky ruyi and shu visit pregnant empress with emperor and kinda bullied her by bringing up how emperor romance with hui and empress got nervous and emperor noticed but didn't care 😂 should kept because the drama showed that ruyi can be cold hearted or petty so why delete this makes more human and she was completely OK with the pregnancy of her supposed enemy who didn't let her get pregnant and was horrible to her and hailan

0:46 She’s so proactive in this scene! What a great way to stand out, too! I always did admire Shu for how real she was and how she even had the courage to speak her mind to the emperor at times. Such a great character, it’s a shame she’s actually in love with him tho…
1:18 They do say the tears of a woman are powerful lol
2:04 Cool! Btw Do u have any J-Drama recommendations? I’ve been trying to get into them recently, but the ones I stumble upon are just so cringey to me lol
3:31 I always wondered why the creepy eunuch chose Yanwan specifically… also what exactly are the parameters of their “relationship”? At times, Yanwan allows him to get too close to her, and at other times she seems extremely uncomfortable whenever he’s nearby… kinda weird and I’m confused now
5:16 ERRRR (*buzzer sound*)!!! Wrong answer! But thx for playing… i guess
6:34 Poor baby!!! 😭😭 May I dare say that Ling Yunche’s pure love for Yanwan was comparable to that of Dr. Jiang’s love for Suoxin 🥺
6:57 I’m sorry, I’m sure this is absolute torture for him, but you gotta admit it’s kinda funny 😂 (man, I’m terrible)
As for Yanwan, I do understand her motivations and kinda why she dropped Yunche like a water-filled balloon on a hot summer day… I mean, people change. And perhaps all the abuse she was subjected to these past couple of years made her realize that power is EVERYTHING, and that she needs it to protect herself (and get revenge)… I dunno. Although, I do believe that she did indeed love or have feelings for Yunche. It’s weird how possessive, petty, and jealous she becomes towards him later on after she becomes one of the emperor’s women.

2:04 I gotta be real with you, that's just how they are 😂 It's funny, I started watching asian dramas at a very young age so they just seem normal to me, but when I try to introduce them to others I generally get told c-dramas are too dramatic, or too childish, and J-dramas are too awkward or cringey. K-dramas do well though! I guess it's just like I find the signing and dancing in Bollywood unbearable but some people grew up with it and/or like it.
Really though, for Japanese dramas, the humor can be weird if it's not your cup of tea, but I've also never seen any other country's shows get so real about serious topics like bullying, suicide, rape, etc. Just depends what you're into. If you have something specific you're looking for, lmk and I'll get back to you with a recommendation if I have one.
3:31 because she looks like the current favorite, RuYi. It's never gone into detail in the drama (that might have been too much for censors) but I think the idea is that as we see from eunuch Wang, not having certain parts means you have to find stimulation elsewhere. Yanwan is pretty, young, and forbidden fruit. Creepy eunuch is attracted to her/having fun with her. How far exactly he can go? Again, too much for the censors but I guess that's up to what Yanwan wants.
About Yanwan - TOTALLY! it's so easy to want someone to be a good person but at the end of the day, none of us have been in a position like that and again, 3 YEARS of torture. That's enough to drive anybody mental. What if one day YunChe grew tired of her? She would have no power or money of her own to fall back on. I get her decision, I do.

@@dramarecaps4217 thank you so much for that clarification on YanWan’s and that creepy eunuch’s relationship. It makes sense now.
And as for the J-dramas, nothing quite in particular! I don’t mind watching shows that bring light on those serious topics. I’m down for anything (so long as it isn’t cringe worthy and takes itself seriously lol)!

@@poppinmms8980 "takes itself seriously" yuppp there's the rub 😂 I totally get what you mean by that. Ok an old simple romance story that I liked is "buzzer beat". Sweet and keeps the silliness to a minimum. Though there is still some. There's another heart wrenching one called 1 litre of tears. No silliness, only tears. Alice in borderlands has been pretty popular worldwide, I liked the first season well enough. Doctor X is a good show if you like shows like "House MD". Solid story but there are a few ridiculous scenes. Idk if it's the influence of anime but sometimes I find myself so baffled by the comedic choices, especially in shows that are supposed to be serious. Personally I just learned to live with it 😁 Also, Japanese movies in general keep a level head and can get very deep, so movies might be more your speed over dramas. Good luck!

I have to say, I don’t blame YanWan at all for the choice she made here. I think it’s easy to forget because of he timeskip but she’s been stuck in Jia’s palace for THREE YEARS. Three years is a long time to be abused in such a vicious way. If that made her think the more powerful she is, the less likely she will be made to suffer then I don’t blame her for that choice at all.
The choices she made later are definitely monstrous but going hot and cold with LLC isn’t a huge crime imo. It’s easy for Ruyi to look down on her when she’s never had the same demands on her YanWan has (her mother for one!)

Yanwan is a strange character, without a doubt this first part of the drama seeks for us to generate empathy for her and explain her future decisions and although I think that it does achieves that (mostly) it is not an argument that it can be maintained throughout the entire drama, mainly because Yanwan is someone who is not willing to take responsibility for her actions, always looking for an argument to absolve herself of any guilt, a trait that she shares with the emperor, but there comes a time when you can't just try to justify your actions on others or in circumstances, especially when you did had other options (again, same as the emperor).

    • @dramarecaps4217
      @dramarecaps4217  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Well put! I do find it realistic though- you start by justifying the first few steps and then the next one is only a little bit worse, and then you have to do this next thing because xyz, and then... Well, you end up as Yanwan did

Yanwan, no matter what you see later in the series, never loved Ling Yunche like at all. Because ain't no way you love someone and then choose money and power over them.

I thought that as a second class female attendant she's only allowed to have one maid.
