  • After a few epic trips on the Kangaroo River last year, I was itching to get down again. With not a lot of spare time as we head towards Christmas, I decided to quickly pack some gear and head down to Tallowa Dam for a Solo camp Kayak camp and fish adventure.
Tallowa Dam is approximately a two hour drive from Sydney and I arrived at the launch area at around 3pm. I set up my Hobie Lynx and travelled upstream along the Kangaroo River to find a place to set up camp for the night. About 3km upstream you hit the junction of the Kangaroo River and Bundanoon Creek. On the point is a camping area called " Sawyers", which was the perfect area for camp with great access to the edge of the water. I was surprised to find nobody at the sight and had the pace to myself. In fact I did not see another human the whole weekend until I returned to the launch area.
So i set up my trusty Durston 2p tent, Alton blow up bed and pillow plus sleeping bag. I was only staying overnight and so had a very simple set up. I also had a small folding table and chair in a tub that sat on the back of my kayak.
I have an Engel soft cooler loaded with cool drinks, milk, and food for dinner and breakfast. I also had my Jetboil so I could heat up water for coffee etc.
After a quick set up I went straight back out on the Hobie Lynx for an afternoon/dusk/night fish.
Its a special place down there and I am in my happy space whether Im catching fish or not.
I cast and trolled a variety of lures around. Jackal Chubby deep,, Cicada imitations on the surface and had a cracking time.
The weather was perfect except for a bit of a breeze but the night and morning was very mild and I noted probably the warmest I have experienced down there.
I caught some nice Bass the biggest going 41cm and also landed 3 Carp as bycatch.
I lost a few fish and lures but had some great hook ups and really enjoyed myself.
At night back at camp I crashed out but there was lots of wildlife crawling around, digging, jumping and making grunts and groans, so I did not have the best sleep, but I kind of expect that when camping.
The next morning i got up at 4am, had some breaky and was on the water well before first light. The fish were not really on the bite but i managed a few nice fish. I als ducked into Bundanoon Creek but it was really quiet and after packing up my gear mid morning I headed back to Tallowa dam by about 2pm. I packed my kayak and gear in the car and headed home.
Solo camping may not be for everyone, but I really enjoy the peace and quiet and as no power boats are allowed on this system you can enjoy the serenity without the worry of dodging jet ski's and boats. True bliss down there.
If you have not done this then put it on the list.
You can book a campsite online for $6 per night. You can decide where to camp on any of the designated areas. Sawyers also had a drop toilet which is good.

See you all on the next adventure.

Thanks very much. Such an awesome place to visit and spend time. Catching a Bass is just a bonus on that system as you just soak up all the surroundings and enjoy the peace and quiet 👍🏼

Yes how good is it when you can just relax and fish on not have to look over your shoulder. Personal gripe is when you paddle 5km to your spot and are about to cast and 3 jetski’s come past doing tricks and zooming around on your spot. 😂😂👎🏻
