Just got back from Florida yesterday, was on a shell tour with Alli on Wednesday on Kice island. Unbelievable shells were everywhere thanks to the tropical storm. Brought back a carry on suitcase full of shells

Oh my gosh, the minute I heard that wave and saw that water. I instantly felt better. More calm and peaceful. The beach really is therapy. It’s the one place in the world. I would always choose to go to.

I know what you mean about about not being interested in certain shells then it changes. I never used to pick up sea snails but now after watching you and another Aussie sheller I found myself picking up a few at my local beach the other day. Great scallop haul again. Just so pretty.

First of all, thanks so much for taking us with you each week. I am amazed at how many unbroken Florida cones today. I spent a couple of hours at Guana River Preserve looking for Shark's teeth this morning. My daughter's each got a handful, while I got about 8, I will blame it on age LOL Have a great week Sharmon, I hope Debby was not to bad for you, I found a couple of leaks in my house when wind drives rain in sideways. The joys of home ownership and hurricanes.
I was happy to see that other hurricane they've been talking about will likely not hit Florida - yay!!! I very much dislike hurricane season, but....the shells! I went to the 10K islands after Debby and it was pretty awesome. I like summer shelling but post-storm shelling is so much fun!

We were very soggy from the storm and I was bummed the beach flooded but...the shells were pretty awesome!!

We just got back from Sanibel and we found so many different shells I felt like I was in shell heaven 😊 my husband and kids had the most amazing time ever.
The little storm helped kick things up a bit!

Normally I complain about summer shelling but I've decided I really like it. Every shell ends up being a treasure and all the critters make the trip that much more fun! I hope you and the kitties have a wonderful week!
Really enjoyed your last video, reminded me of a trip I took to Keewaydin in June, soo fun😊,great shelling 🎉!
at 9:10 the true Ark shells have a byssal orifice at the ventral side, both valves have such an indentation, so it makes a wide, pointy oval, gap. The byssus, by which it attaches itself to the substrate, is quite big in Ark shells. If you search for e.g. Arca ventricosa you can see how big this gap can be in hinged pairs.
Google helped me with both Arca ventricosa and the byssus. I saw a neat project that someone had completed by taking the byssys of pen shells and was able to make a fabric from it. I didn't realize the arks don't all close like clams. I wish you had a TH-cam channel so I could learn more from you!

We love going to Keewaydin because shells are great, the island peaceful, and the shuttle is so reasonable. We have taken one trip out to the 10,000 islands.last year as the kids got me that for Christmas. This winter we are going out with SWF shell Guide that you recommended, I can’t wait to get back to the beach.
Ali is the best - she will get you to where those shells are! I hoe you have a great time planning for your trip!

Hi Sharmon, I was wondering if you ever get those nasty comments from conservationist regarding the collection of seashells and how we're harming the cycle of sea life by collecting all of these wonderful treasures. I've been reading about the poor little hermit crabs having to use plastic caps and other garbage due to the lack of shells. I personally think it's due to all the garbage left behind and not necessarily the lack of shells. What's your thoughts on the matter? Love your videos by the way 🥰 Never miss a Sunday.
I do get comments that I'm "taking homes of other creatures that need shells" but it's just people that don't know any better. Down here in Southwest Florida, we have PLENTY of shells for people, the critters and some. But other areas int he world, such as Japan, do not have the multitude of shells and the creatures do have to get creative with other things they find like plastic caps or tin cans. I don't mind people trying to be helpful, but people that don't know any better and tell me I'm taking critters homes crack me up 😂
If there is a beach in heaven, you will see me there, loaded down with sea shells❤❤❤❤

I have to wait until Mondays to watch your videos now...I just can't make it until 1:30 or so in the a.m. here in Paris, France, when you post. But I'm so glad I can still see them because there are some things that I can't get here, for some reason. You got a great bunch of shells, especially for summertime. Today is supposed to be 100* so I'm totally staying inside in the air conditioning and enjoying a "cool" beach walk...thank you.
I'm glad to hear you have access to AC - I know not all of Europe was built for AC. We're so spoiled!
@@SWFBeachLife Unfortunately, a/c is becoming a necessity where it didn't used to be, and so many people don't have it. It was only a fluke this place, where I chose to live when I came 11 years ago, had a/c. I try to stay in the same place each time I come.

Ok, there was one day this year where I went to the beach to film and had to leave with nothing. But....that has only happened once and it was in a different location so I'm not entirely surprised. Post-storm shelling this time was fantastic - I had myself a fabulous time! Can't wait to share!

Hello. LOL Yes I am that Greek word. I’m a former American expatriated in Vietnam. The shelling here is……different depending what part of the massive coast line one is in.
Locally…..the beaches outside of Hoi An where we are 10 minutes away, have some interesting shells and my wife and I enjoy looking very much.
In comparison (I love/loved Ft. Myers and Marco Island - area, etc) Florida has Vietnam beat by an insane margin. Not even a contest but we work with what we have.
We enjoy your channel and narration tremendously….
If I could shell internationally, I think I'd pick Australia as my first destination, followed by Japan and Hawaii. Thank you so very much for watching and confirming that SW Florida has absolutely amazing shells!

A suggestion, I really liked having the date of the actual shelling day on the video….maybe have it on them all so that we know when it actually happened. Just my opinion. I have! The acid will not remove the black color - it will only remove any whitish residue the shell might have
I cannot wait to book a trip to Keewaydin. Next month I have family visiting and we’re renting a boat to do our own shell tour in the 10k islands. We’re all really looking forward to it. I hope I get to finally find my Rose Murex.

What a wonderful tour! One question Sharon, how do you tell the difference between an Apple murex and a lace murex?
The apple murex shells are more squat and the opening is large in comparison to the shell. The lace is longer and its opening is smaller. They sure do look similar though!
I really love watching your videos every Sunday. We will be on Sanibel in early October. What would be your preference if you had to choose, Keewayden or Kice? We will only have time for one so we are trying to decide which one to try. Let me add that my hubby has knee issues so it is difficult for him to transfer to some boats. Thank you for always taking me to my happy place each Sunday. 😊
In your situation, I would choose Keewaydin. It's going to be MUCH easier on your husbands knee, you can spend as long as you want on the island and it can be just as fabulous as Kice. I don't think you'd be disappointed with Keewaydin.

Why is summer shelling not as good as winter shelling? Is it because there are more people, on the beach, competing for the shells? LOVE you videos ~ Thank you!!
The winds in the summer tend to push the shells out further from the beach, whereas the NW winds we get in winter help push the shells onto the beach. And a good storm no matter what season helps tremendously!

I love your videos! I wondered why you said "Look past all the conchs". Does that mean there are usually other shells? Thank you so much!
I personally have a weakness for the Florida fighting conchs. I say to myself, "Oh, I'm just going to look at it," and the next thing you know it's in my shell bag. If that happens enough times my bag gets too full so I tell myself to try to ignore the fighting conchs so I can maybe find something else 😂

I love your channel. I’m in Canada and going to visit friends next year who live near Winter Garden FL and wonder what beach would be the best to take a day trip to for the one chance of shelling I’ll probably have. Any recommendations?
That's quite a bit North from where I normally look for shells but if I were going there I would try Cocoa Beach (never been but want to) or Honeymoon Island (was great).

Sharmon, was in Sanibel just as Debby was knocking on the door so wasn’t able to really shell like I was hoping to😢. Wanted to ask you what do you use to carry the shells you find? I know you use your containers for the small delicates, but any other things you can recommend?
