  • This is my Bubble review, critique or analysis. Or whatever you wanna call this video lol. It's pretty much just me rambling thoughts about Netflix's newest anime movie - Bubble. Wit studio and Tetsuro Araki brought us this new visually stunning anime film on April 28th. Some are saying they didn't really enjoy it, but do you think it lives up to the hype? Let me know in the comments down below!

I’m a bit late to the party since I only watched this anime recently, but I do have to say that I did almost love everything about it. The music was wonderful, the voice acting was decent, and the animations/visuals were stunning and smooth. One of the main reasons I kept watching personally.
But what upset me was the missed potential of writing a decent, coherent story.
Like you have mentioned in the video, it could’ve definitely benefited having more time to be developed story-wise. Because everything did feel rushed and felt like it was trying to balance many things at once while ultimately failing to get its footing.
I really liked the whole parkour competition thing it had going and would’ve been awesome to see more of that action. But that also happened to be mixed with trying to build its characters, the world, and the romance between Hibiki and Uta.
And throughout the movie, I was disappointed that I still had many questions that I wanted answered but you wouldn’t get that satisfaction by the end.
It couldn’t dedicate enough time to try and establish the whole lore behind the bubbles, where it comes from, what their purpose is, and so on.
We don’t really know why they’re there in the first place, but as soon as they happen to make it to Japan, one particular bubble and a boy grow some kind of connection to each other and then it just becomes some deviation of The Little Mermaid story while it’s also trying to establish the life inside the bubble and the characters within it.
Personally I just think it really failed to hit the mark in a lot of the areas story-wise and it probably could’ve been a lot more fleshed out as a series.
But other than that, I really enjoyed everything else about it.
TL;DR : Loved the animation, music, voice acting, but disappointed that the story is a mess from trying to establish many things at once while also rushing to fit it all within a 1 hour 40 minute time span.

Hibiki has high functioning autism. And bubble is a more modern take on the little mermaid. It also showcases the natural gifts and talents that those with autism tend to have, how they struggle to socialize and fit in, as well as the fact of the lives they live, the traumas they face, how they internalize it all, how they struggle to open up, etc. honestly I’m surprised no one recognizes this or even gives credit to this at all.

    • @DepressoExpresso-f7p

Respectfully, as a college kid in psychology, hibiki does not have autism. He has auditory hypersensitivity. It is similar in that they are both sensory issues. I will admit even my gut reaction on his headphones was "AUTISTIC" but after watching it, he does not display enough symptoms to be even high functioning autism. sorry for ranting lol.

The only issue I have with this is the certain screen blackouts during the movies that just feels like a waste of time and the plot was so very underdeveloped 💀. I feel they could’ve used those screen blackout moments to to add in more plot or sumn idk. The music was great as well but that’s abt it for me.

My take on bubble is that they made the plot very abstract to give viewers more interpretation.
Here is my explanation of the plot.
I think Uta is some sort of entity that wanted to bless the world with bubbles at a time in Tokyo. Like a hive mind, but a tiny part of that mind has taken interest in hibiki because he could hear her song and sort of broke that uniform purpose, thus creating the “first impact” and hibiki being saved by the bubbles.
And so on while Uta watched over hibiki, the bubble and state of Tokyo stayed the way it was. Which kind of puts a villain role to Uta, she was selfish because her interest in hibiki ultimately killed so many.
And when hibiki was in danger his last breaths combined with her created a human form of her. And if you watch back in the movie, Utas human form was created based off of an advertisement of a girl with the same outfit and hairstyle, thus theorizing she mimicked that human form from seeing it.
I think their romance was a little rushed but it was still wholesome and I think hibiki being a loner and with his auditory sensory issues, kind of latched on to Uta and “became his real self” I sort of see them more as friends then anything more though🥲❤️
    SPOILERS
And then at the end when hibiki is in the tower, it is revealed that his contact with the bubble/Uta created this new bittersweet bubble world. It wanted to create some emotional damage to hibiki. And I’m guessing the hive mind got too angry that Uta was forming a more personal connection with hibiki it created more chaos like it first started with.
Uta had to return to her “sister” which is connected with her, to come to a bittersweet ending of how then Tokyo became “normal” again and Uta blessed the world with a bubble phenomenon again like how it all started.
It’s a very deep film and can be interpreted from the little mermaid references, and living in a bubble metaphor. I absolutely loved it, I would love a series diving into eachother of the character before because there were so many interesting plot point for like shin, makoto, the undertaker and etc. And ultimately I would like to know what exactly Uta was.

My thoughts exactly. I wish they expounded more on the disagreeing sister part. So much mystery was built but the explanations weren't sufficient that all the build up didn't give a satisfying conclusion. I didn't even cry or felt sorry when Uta vanished. It was a bit rushed in the end. But considering the animation, character design, musical score man it was an audiovisual masterpiece.

  • @CyAA-ri2us
    @CyAA-ri2us 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I think it actually delivered. I watched the show without knowing it was tagged as romance and thought it was more of an artsy interpretation.
One of my favorite classics is the Metropolis animation which was so similar to this story and only had hints of romance. But what really pulled me to it is the subtexts.
Bubble was meta and weirdly semetic, in my MAL review I said there that the bubbles in the movie could be a representation of angels, and that the Uta's twin image / hivemind of sisters is it's representation of heaven's horde of angels and maybe even a god. Angels were never meant to fall in love with humans in a sense, and that this was just one of the many destructions that the Bubbles have created, but in this instance a Bubble fell for a person who was special enough to notice her.
I have so much more theories about this movie and I definitely think it's more than just a romance movie. Definitely a 10/10 to me and reminds me of Metropolis, my first tragic romance.

I'm currently in the middle of watching it, and I had to pause for some research if it's worth finishing, sadly. I haven't spoiled myself about anything yet but I feel like the end might be very foreseeable. Uta dying somehow.
Anyway, the reason why I stopped in the middle of watching was because I felt that this movie wasn't going anywhere. It has an interesting premise, outstanding visuals, and Uta is great, but the other characters and _especially the main character_ are really really lackluster and generic. Every character interaction is just one trope after the other. Sadly, everything revolves around the main character who fulfills all the anime main character clichés and thus gets utterly boring. And I can't help but feel like they yet again wanted a generic main character that the insecure young adult/teenage audience can identify with.
If we could get visuals like these, with soundtracks like that, and combine it with good writing that some more mature anime have shown to have, anime could become truly timeless.

I saw the movie and... it's ok! The music and animation are beautiful but the characters are not memorable at all! Except Hibiki, Uta, Shin and Makoto; the rest were... there. I couldn't remember their names. The action was fun, the parkour looks exciting. I saw it in japanese with english subs, had more fun trying to recognize the seiyuu's than following the romance between Hibiki and Uta. I cared more about Miyano mamoru aka Light Yagami's voice than everything else.
Bubble wasn't boring but not amazing either. Compare to Your Name or Patema and the inverted world it's ok 🙂

I really get what you mean. But I would add on top of that, that even Hibiki wasn't memorable at all :/
He was really generically put together, made out of a bunch of tropes. He did not really have any personality, but was the focus point of most of the movie, which further made the other characters besides Uta just being, well... there.

Mostly positive. Some points get subtracted for the frontloaded voiceover backstory, The clunky explanation of the competitive sport, etc. Also my language dub had me cringe at various points.
Overall good to exzellent, could be great.
Also also spoiler literature reference i suppose: the movie went to the little mermaid book for inspiration and that bugged me for an obscure reason: After Earth, yes the shitty movie with will Smith, failed horribly in using Moby Dick in a similar manner. Both as a prop, reference and plot blue print. Again: not a fault with Bubble. I blame Jaden and Will for running classic literature references forever.
Also also also: spoiler about metaphysics and the ending i suppose:
I thought the bubble around Tokyo (wich reminded me of The Shimmer from Annihilation) was the reason the water level was so high (the tiny bubbles are made of water and fill the city with water when they burst). But when the giant bubble was removed, the water levels remained and no flood wave. Though later the street level was being worked on with construction equipment, so im puzzle about that.

I feel like the actual point of the video starts at 5:14. It's a great video, but calling it "The Wasted Potential a Bubble" makes it seem like that's the point of the whole thing - when in reality it's only 25% of it. In reality it's mostly a "quick look" of the movie. I'd suggest titling it something like "Bubble: Attack on Titan, with sparkles" or something better you can come up with.

I think the reason why the plot was meh was because the staff was relying on people's knowledge of the "Little Mermaid." At least that's what I got with the references throughout the film.

I think the plot was really interesting but they left wayyyy to much unexplained and it was quite confusing in the end - literally the only reason it’s an 8/10 is because they easily could have made the movie like two minutes longer with a bit of exposition instead of “haha spiral bubble mean aliens! Have pretty animation”

@@liz7694 I think they could have explained more yes, but it really
Was not that hard to understand you just had to think a bit

Had to stop mid way in. Corny and boring, but the animation and visuals are nice.
    Basically a beautiful turd.

i absolutely loved this anime. i feel like it truly needed to be a mini series or a full blown out season where they could of taken their time to slowly build up the characters development and flesh out the world overall. this would have given them time to do more with the other teams and the drama of the game as well. if they had made this into a series they could of taken the ending and gave us more to understand and a deeper dive into who she was and where she came from. overall i loved this show and the animation is truly next level.

I personally loved the movie. I didn't fully understand the objective nature of everything, but that lets me fill up the blanks in my head. I feel that if they explained everything, part of the magic would be gone. Also absolute BANGERS cooked by Sawano

I love how you say it’s wasted potential but at the end of the day it was an amazing movie that had a lot of potential. There was no potential wasted. The movie was awesome and it made so much money the art, so I was amazing. The story was amazing it’s basically the real version of Ariel turning into seafoam was the real Ariel story although it had popcorn in the story was amazing, so how about you stop hating the same with everybody else if you didn’t like the movie, then shut up and keep on moving with your day because nobody asked.
