A shame we never got Xtreme but Sonic Adventure was a really good 1st attempt at a 3d Sonic.

I would love to just get a glimpse at the world where Sonic screams onto the Saturn with a great game.
    This is a great topic!

Awesome edits and interesting insights - great job on the video man. Wild story. The fact Sega didn’t have a flagship sonic game for Saturn is baffling to this day.

That Sonix Xtreme is pretty crazy. I wish we would have got a side scrolling Sonic game with polygons... but yeah.

You let SEGA off too easy with the development of Xtreme. From the very beginning, SEGA had no faith in Xtreme, and Yuji Naka told the Xtreme devs "Good luck" and walked out after seeing their Saturn prototype, which was running at 10fps at that point.
Later, Bernie Stolar (the one who'd infamously say at E3 '97 "The Saturn is Not Our Future!") asked the team what they'd need to complete Xtreme, and he got them the NiGHTS engine. Apparently Sega never told Yuji Naka this, and when he found out he threatened Sega HQ that he would quit if they didn't take back the NiGHTS engine from the Xtreme dev team, so the Xtreme team were back at square one.
The Xtreme team almost suffered 2 deaths due to constantly trying to make it work on Saturn at an acceptable framerate while also trying to complete other parts of the game. The lead designer got extremely sick and had to quit the project altogether.
Sonic Xtreme was doomed from the start. It never really had Sega's backing and the team were constantly hitting obstacles and walls.

I like Naka but that was such a dick move it makes me no so sad to see his recent trouble. I can get him being kinda mad about it initially, but you'd think he would've came around eventually.

The 3 sonic games on the Saturn were/are actually quite good and Yuji Naka spent most of his time with the console experimenting in the form of Nights and Burning Rangers which was a great move honestly.
Firstly 3D Blast is very underrated. Its the true version (IMO the Genesis version doesn't count) with one of the greatest music soundtracks ever. Once you get used to the iso view its a fun little romp. Lack of save feature is the only downside.
Sonic R has always been a trendy game to hate. Its so dumb. Along with 3D Blast its also a game I played back closer to when it was released. Its one of the best graphical achievements on the system and it plays well. But most of all it can truely be played as a collect/adventure game with all the little side quests and things to collect. Its probably my favorite thing about the game
Lastly Sonic Jam is perfectly fine. Has the awesome little museum and 3D world to mess around in plus the OG titles. There are some performance issues that should have otherwise made these definitive versions to play back then but nothing that ruined them.
Yes the truth is us Saturn owners back in the day were stunned by the lack of a true Mario 64 style entry but Ive looked at it in a different light. The 3 Sonic games on the system while awkward to some, are great IMO and Yuji Naka did his best work with experimental games in the incredible Nights and the vastly underrated and unfortunately rushed Burning Rangers

I still have my Sega Saturn and games. I actually enjoyed Sonic R. Wouldn’t say it’s my favorite, but I liked it.

One thing I feel like you should’ve added is that when the team asked to use Yuji naka’s boss engine for xtreme, Yuji Naka threatened them saying that he would leave the company if they did. Yikes

It's amazing that with how much turmoil sega was in around this time they managed to even release the dreamcast!
