    This just shows how ridiculously fit ex-pro athletes are. Dan has even admitted that he doesn't ride a bike much any more. His colleagues could probably smash him in a bike race now, and he's still crushing this half marathon goal! Respect.

    Why do I now feel spring-classics-level excitement for Dan's half marathon?! I want to see it LIVE on racepass/GCN+!!!!

    Now the 3.47 seed has been planted in Dan's mind, I think he will definitely go for the 1hr 20m target. I hope he does it.

      He's also been running a while now as well. This is just when he started taking it seriously. Got a good base to build on but wasn't the fittest member of GCN when he started so still great effort.

      Agreed! 4m/km is a good speed at any distance

      He may have the cardiovascular fitness, but running is a different game, much harder on the bones and muscles. He is doing great for someone who's longest run is only 18 km!

    I am following the training plan as well and looking forward to the final push. I feel that I have become very one paced now that I am completing the longer runs so I am not confident of hitting my target of 1hr 45 for the half marathon. I am hoping that the reduced mileage in the final two weeks will give me the extra oomph needed to hit the 1.45 mark. Good luck to Dan with his effort.

    • @graemesadd6971
      @graemesadd6971 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the effort sessions which give you an idea of your ability at pace. The 2 x 3km at hm was a good test. I'm sure you'll be fine if you've followed the plan.

    • @kierenkd
      @kierenkd 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Follow a plan - all of them will have you do some speed work to vary the paces and tune specific parts of your running game. Only going one pace will do a disservice to your current potential.

    Very good information. I really wish Dan the best of luck. I to never have drink or gels on long run. That could be my problem and I should correct. Just a thought, I'm a senior runner. I'm 4 weeks into a Garmin program. It's limited to 1h32 but I'm targeting 1h30 as a stepping stone towards a sub 3 FM, so if I can push to 1h25 that would be great. I'm itching for a 5k or 10k TT but there's no space in the training plan and I'm sticking to that for now.

    • @kierenkd
      @kierenkd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kierenkd thanks. My PBs are 19:35 (5k) and 40:12 (10k). Yes, getting improved 5k and 10k results will be good indicators when I'm heading towards my sub 3 goal.

    • @kierenkd
      @kierenkd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davesharratt917 It's annoying the garmin plans don't go faster. Your times are similar to me (19:07 5K). I'm not sure for my 1/2 marathon - I think I am in 1:28 shape based on training runs. I'm in week 16 of 18 of the Brooks Hanson marathon plan. That recommends not training marathon / HM back to back but to switch up with speed, so I plan to do Jack Daniels 5K training on about 50mpw for 12 weeks next, then back into Half Marathon training for a September race.
      I need 3:05 for a London marathon GFA chance but I expect a lot of people can hit that so probably need to be well under realistically if I decide to try.

  • @mikeshaw714

    Doesn't surprise me he's good. Most good cyclists I know as also really good runners, there is something in the muscle make up. I am pretty crap at Cycling, Running and Swimming and always have been, but... I was very good at (County Level) Football, Long Jump, 100m (anything shorter than 200m I was very good at), Rugby, etc. There is definitely something in your muscle make up that determines what sports you will be good at IMO. Unfortunately, I will always be crap at Tri events but I will always give it my best, I probably could of gone far in Football - but it's crap and I'd rather poop in my hands and clap than play Football !

    Why gels for half-marathon? Dan's leg muscles alone will store way more than enough glycogen for the duration. Apart from the caffeine, is taking gels like a placebo / confidence boost?

    • @oldleadfoot9026
      @oldleadfoot9026 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking the same. I've never even taken a drink of water with me for a half marathon, let alone gels, and I've always been fine. It's likely the pace he's planning on running at, which may deplete his glycogen fairly quickly, as opposed to my sluggish 5min/km pace🤔
