I'm guessing the proportions of Grimlock's chest were changed to make it fit better with different arms in Multiplayer, and that's probably the case for a lot of other characters as well. A small price to pay for better customization.
This. You gotta not just think about it from visuals, but also functionally too. For Slug, the back is likely changed to make it more visibly pronounced because the player is going to spend most of the game looking at the back of their character. For Snarl, it's probably a similar reason, but also for visibility in gameplay. It would be putting the player at a disadvantage if their fov was being blocked by their own character, so the tail parts would logically be altered to fix that

The SP proportions look better than most MP proportions, however, considering that the MP versions have to share a skeleton with every other character of their respective class, I can understand why they had to be slightly altered, I mean look at Bumblebee and DeadEnd, in WFC, their proportions looked great but in FOC, they ended up looking fatter to fit with the skeleton
It's a shame sludge never got the love he deserved and was left as a lifeless husk in the "cut and run" chapter

I don't think these changes would really affect the game much. Odd they even bothered to do this
because all characters in each class needed to be the same size for balancing
