I introduced my dad to this game when I was a teen and visiting him for the weekend. It was late, so we were just going to play for a little while, but next thing we knew it was 1am, hours later. The UI may be clunky, but it had a grand openness of choices yet brutal consequences for both taking unnecessary risks and for playing too defensively. Hidden movement... watching that still makes me shiver. I've played the newer ones, and they are good, but they seem too streamlined and balanced. In the original you would take extra weapons in the craft with you, or pick up a loaded weapon mid-scenario dropped by an alien. Curse at certain soldiers that always seem to panic and reluctantly retiring them. Those effing sectoids popping up out of the field and shooting your soldiers with an alien accuracy before calmly walking back into the smoke.
Back in my Amiga days, UFO was one of my biggest time sinks. You start off with a bunch of rookies that get domed walking through a corn field, to heavy armoured warriors that can clear a landed mothership in three or four turns. Prime tactic was to crack the roof with a guided fusion launcher, peek inside, then use psychics to mind control enemy psychics to then mind control enemies to kill each other.
dudes like you will one day save Gaming. GG man. You should do a video about HOMM III, Master of Magic and perhaps BG2 or something. I think game development is at risk of losing the plot and games like the new dragon age are big wake up call and we must 'return to the roots" to find a way forward and progress rather then this year by year net loss.
@@bobsteave1236 Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 for sure. Those are some of my favorite games. I never got into HOMM III myself but I could see myself giving it a real college try and succeeding. Looking forward to XCOM 3 video personally. Thing is, we've had enough wake up calls. I agree with what you're saying but there comes a time and point where the alarm clock has gone off enough to where gamers need to act using their constant information they've already been drilled on. One such thing is supporting indies, and not just games that are the flagship titles everyone thinks of. I'm more than happy to give that push of course. Thanks so much, man! You rock. If you remember by the way, could you tell me where you found my videos from? Just taking inventory on how this all works.
I remember playing this game as a kid. It's pretty nerve wracking until you crack it. Basically, it's all about the stats. Aim over 60,+ Strength 60+, reaction 50+, bravery 45+. Anyone without those stats or better? Sack em. Later, when you get Psi training, remove anyone with less than 70. This means you'll probably be sacking 90% of your recruits- but trust me, it's worth it. Protect your investment by rushing power armor tech. Experienced troops are vastly more capable than inexperienced ones, so move cautiously and don't take stupid risks. Xcom personell lives actually count for more than civilian lives, so prioritize keeping your boys alive over saving civvies- even on terror missions, you'll get a passing grade as long as you lose no troops and deal with every alien- even if every civvie is also unalived (just avoid harming civvies yourself.). Mass manufacture laser weapons for extra funds. In fact, use ALL of your spare manufacturing cycles to make laser weapons to sell on the black market. Selling laser weapons always results in a net profit, although the best are the laser cannons. Never use doors. If you can, make your own entryway- aliens litterally camp doorways and the ships are designed in such a way as to give them an advantage while doing so. Space your troops apart so they can't all get insta-gibbed by a blaster- but not so far apart where they cannot support eachother. Ideally, if someone spots an alien, there should be 3-4 other guys who can also take shots on him, should it be necassary. Sweep the map thoroughly- check everything before moving on. there is nothing worse than taking a shot in the back- because your armor is thinest there. Only move half your force at a time- let the other half cover them with overwatch/reaction. You should always try to end your turn Kneeling- this greatly increases the chances of taking a chest shot if you get shot- this is the highest armored section of any armor.

You brought back memories of me doing the roof thing. Remember to like and subscribe, thanks for watching!
I have rage quit several XCOM games. I had PTSD just clicking on the video link.
Dude I’m digging your attitude and personality. Good luck with your channel.
Never been shown a sub 100 view video that I both watched and enjoyed. Great work.

I wish you went more in depth with the games' systems, I think it helps a lot with new people checking out these older gems when they get reviewed.
That's a good point. I had this thought a few times during production. Thanks for the criticism.
