Both sides of my family have French Huguenot surnames. The family have Spanish, Portuguese and French/German genetics. We're from St Lucia. But, my great great grandfather was from Venezuela (Spanish Guyana) Maracaibo. Apparently he said he was Jewish. My grandfathers also spoke Ladino, like most people in the Caribbean of that generation.

Thanks. Columbus may have had more than two Jewish crew members. They manned the astrolabe, used charting skills to document land claims and safe sailing and person(s) for translating languages they expected to incur. The Sephardic Jews crew adopting Christianized names may be in the teens.
/// There is a relatively new book called “Caribbean Jewish Crossings” that is an essay collection that considers the Caribbean's relationship to Jewishness through a literary lens. The section on the early Portuguese settlements bears on your lecture.
// Our St. Thomas “Sandfloor” Synagogue, Beracha Veshalom Vegmiluth Hasadim (Blessing and Peace and Acts of Piety), does have deep roots in the Hebrew Diaspora from 1796. I give tours and we are very active. It was built on a hill literally built by Jews that is higher than existing churches. A big difference during the last 80 years of the Age of Sail. // Another book about this topic is new, as well. It covers in great photographic detail all of the Caribbean Synagogues. It is called “Jewish Treasures of The Caribbean.” Shalom

12:10 You accidentally misspoke. It was St. Thomas, St. Croix & St. John, not St. Thomas & St. Vincent. 26:23 The Touro Synagogue and Congregation Jeshuat Israel in Newport is really the oldest in the US but not with continuous services. St. Thomas synagogue makes that claim because Touro was occupied by British during the US Revolutionary War.
