Even though the UNSC used more frigates and cruisers during the war there was probably hundreds of corvettes to either be scout ships or engage in fire support in massive naval engagements.
Would a corvette have any use outside of fighter defense? No way even 50 would be a signifigant threat to a covenant cruisers shields. Considering most UNSC cruisers MACs couldnt even take down their shields in a single hit.

personally i think that 343 needs to do a pre-Reach trilogy of games set in the nearly 20 years before the fall of Reach. one interesting thing to develop in the Human-Covenant War over the years. from reading about the history there was quite a lot of time when little or no fighting was taking place. I like the idea that the UNSC used small disposable ships like Frigates and Corvettes to both patrol out of the way systems- both the mislead the Covenant as well as lead them in the wrong direction away from Human worlds. I would include this concept into the over all Cole Protocall- sending small picket patrol ships into out of the way systems with the intent of making it seem like major UNSC assets were nearby
@@robertharris6092a missile is a missile regardless of whether a Corvette or a cruiser fires it. 50 corvettes are thousands of missiles. In hard sci fi it takes a lot to justify anything bigger than a Corvette exactly for this reason. You get the same firepower spread through multiple far cheaper and more maneuverable ships which means you get even more firepower and more ships with the excess funds, you can build them way faster, they're replaceable and expendable, they give you way more strategic flexibility because they're more ships that can be in more places and cover more ground, they're harder to deal with because the enemy has to target each Corvette rather than whittle down a larger flagship, if a Corvette goes down the fleet is barely scratched and the other corvettes are unscathed, if a battleship goes down that's 60 to 70% of your firepower gone, and any hit to a larger flagship will hinder it's capabilities overtime. Corvettes are also far better for stuff like the covenant war where UNSC ships get oneshotted regardless of mass and a battleship is just a bigger target. Corvettes not only make sense, They're the only ship that makes sense most of the time.
There was a Legends lore about a Corvette class, forgot the name, where ita MAC was overcharged so much it can shoot its 600 ton rounds at 37% the speed of light. It would produce eight times the damage output of the ODPs with their cannons shooting 3,000 ton slugs at 4% the speed of light. Okay, did some research. I may have misremembered some numbers. The round was only 300 tons while going 37% the speed of light. It was called the Mark 7/L in Halo Fandom. However the Mark 3/L shoots the 600 to slug past half the speed of light. They are in the page called the Heavy weaponry of the United Nations Space Command.
That sounds like absolute bs. To provide such a proformance requires an enormouse amount of barrel length, power generation, heat disposal ect, that it would never fit on a corvette sized ship. Even accounting for sci fi bs. And if such a ship existed, why would the unsc build anything but it ?
It's hard to visualize just how big even these small ships are. The American Zumwalt class destroyers come in at a length of 190m and displace 16,000 tons. That's bigger than many cruisers that fought in World War II. Despite being one of the largest destroyers built IRL, she's still smaller than a Gladius. Love your ship breakdowns friend. @@robertharris6092 Plus you have to consider the crew, Most sailors only really spend about half of their time at sea when on deployment with a warship, I could imagine if you were forward deployed on a UNSC corvette the entire time the ship is at space the crew is going to be aboard. hell even when the ship does have to dock to repair and rearm that's no grantee of any time planet side or even off the vessel as autonomous orbital docks are fairly commonplace in Halo. Combine that crew comfort requirement with both the space needed for life support systems, Gravity systems, the power systems for the coal and (if it has one) MAC guns as well as more extensive stores of just about everything as resupplying a warship on deployment is just that much harder in space its easy to see why UNSC vessels get so damn big
You may get somewhat of a post war Corvette atleast in SotP, one of my pet projects i hope makes it in is a post war missile corvette. The thing is basically a bed of missiles between two dual MAC/Coilgun batteries.

When the rest of the fleet is biased towards MACs, lasers and Electronic Warfare for countering covenant capitals, corvettes like this while being rarer can focus down smaller targets. Plus use certain tactics to bring down shields and UNSC missiles are very effective once it breaks.
I love the design of the missile corvette, it makes sense for it starting life as a frigate but later being downgraded to a corvette because it looks like a tiny frigate to me.
Yeah, if I could have a sci fi ship or make a story focusing on one, it would be something like these. I'd have to look up the Normandy again but my overall favorite would be the CBS-74 Ptolemaios 2 from Gundam 00. It's a transport carrier instead of a corvette but its size is similar, crew too just about. Its not as armed I think but it still does well with its GN drives and other abilities, not counting the Gundams inside it. That said I do really like the look of the Lancer class

I am always a fan of longer format videos. I put them on at work to listen to while I'm doing my job, and then I put them on at night to fall asleep to. Along with my air conditioner. Even in the middle of winter. Because I am weird.
Now this is pog We put a Seax-class (Our fanon take of a reach design) next to a thermopylae (our take on another UNSC supercarrier) and a punic, the corvettes are absolute shiplets next to them lol. Could probably hold them entirely in their hangars. They're just little guys
The Lancer, Scholte, and Gladius would be best to rebuild with late/post-war technology. The speed, range, and accuracy of the late war CODEN V or possibly newer CODEN VI slip space drives would allow for a better-coordinated task force. The new fusion reactors and titanium-A armor would make them more survivable and would allow for better energy levels for ship systems. Advanced sensors, tracking systems, and engine/maneuverability improvements. New MAC systems, Autocannons, and any advancements made to the Archer and Howler missiles would give a higher punch to be closer to frigate firepower. Even a weaker version of the shield paneling system like the one on the Autum class would make them tanky enough to be worth fielding in a fleet battle.

While not technically part of the Halo canon the mod has gotten attention from 343 in the past… so maybe it’s like semi-canon or something? It’s an interesting little shop that kind of looks like a shrunken Paris-frigate, lengthwise.

Nice video. Shows off some beautiful-looking ships in an energetic video laced with fun. Although you have detail in it too, some videos like this are full of so many geekishly meaningless numbers that it takes away from the utility and beauty. There are some great franchises out there that have their own design language. It's not just enough to have a nice ship design, you need to have something to compare it to within a certain context.

I would take a look at Halo: Starside intercept aswell, its a mod for homeworld 2 that unfortunately never got released but has great artwork with some really cool corvette/frigate designs.

I’m trying to write a halo fanfic that has a space battle, and I’m having trouble with it. Would you consider sins of the prophets a good source for some simulations? A little context: post halo 3, pre halo 4, small unsc expeditionary fleet; 1 carrier, 4 frigates. 2 swords of sangheilios ships, 4 covenant splinter ships.
SoTP has some oddities in regards to certain weapons, MACs do much less damage than they should and so is the case for plasma torpedoes. I think your best bet is to check out the spacebattles in The Fall of Reach and Ghosts of Onyx novels aswell as some of the new lore and try to reconcile the differences

I'd note that the Mako would be pronounced "May-ko" given that it uses the sharks name and, eh, the Gladius would be "Glay-dius". The Scholt just drives me mad. It's a soft sound "sholt" not "skolt", it's a more German name than the majority English names used for most UNSC classes.
Great video! Sins of the Prophets question: I'm a new player (downloaded 2 weeks ago) and Gladius class corvettes are only in-game as neutral pirates....you can't build them. Is there a version/way in which the player can build them?
It's been a while since I've taken a look at the last build but I'm pretty sure you can build them as long as you dont pick Hood as your leader. Next release that's still the plan but there are a bunch of corvettes now including most of the ones from this video.
