Wow, as someone who has had severe KP for my entire life, I didn’t know it would mean so much to me to have someone explain KP so positively. Thank you for your important message that what we look like is the least important thing about us. I’m trying out a salicylic acid moisturizer (Cerave SA Cream) right now that is doing moderately well, but not much better than my regular moisturizer so I’m thankful for the tips!
Anyone else who has KP out there, don’t let it stop you from wearing what you want to wear and feeling that delicious sun on your (sun screened) skin. Having severe KP was a really good way to find out which of my friends and boyfriends were actually deeply mature people. One of my “best friends” in 6th grade told me the only thing she didn’t like about me was my skin. Why would anyone stay friends with someone like that? Now I’m married to the most golden hearted and outrageously attractive man who has the velvety-soft skin I always wanted. I’ll just enjoy his ;). Awww, this is beautiful, I love the positive message! I'm 57 and have battled KP my whole life. I've hated wearing short sleeves and shorts around people because it's always made me feel self-conscious and embarrassed, but I'm working on getting more comfortable in my own KP skin! I think people with beautiful, soft skin perhaps don't appreciate what they have?
I've been dry brushing and also using First Aid Beauty KP Bump Eraser since March and they have helped me so, so much! My arms and butt are nearly perfectly smooth most days and my legs are way better too. The dots still show but these two things have improved my skin texture immensely!
And also like you, I now have someone in my life that doesn't care I don't have perfect skin. ☺️

I have KP and OCD so that leads to me picking up my KP all the time when I’m in private. It’s kind of like people that pull out their own hair. So yeah not only do I have bumpy skin I also have wounds everywhere and people look at me and asked me like “what happened” and it’s really embarrassing. I even had somebody come up to me once and grab my arm in like the grocery store and was like “oh my god what happened to you?!” I remember thinking aren’t you scared you’re going to catch something for me like why are you touching me. I always have to tell people don’t worry it’s not catchy it’s not a rash.

I've had KP my whole life. Luckily, it's never really bothered me in how it looks despite the fact that it covers my arms and is even on my legs a bit.
Fortunately, my mom explained it to me this way when I was little: "It's normal. Some people's skin is like that. It might get better with age and sun, but there's no way to make it go away." And with that, I never thought twice about it or even wished that it would go away. It wasn't until about 2 years ago that I even knew people were trying to get rid of it on themselves or felt bad about it.
If you have KP, you're beautiful! Your skin is beautiful. Use moisturizer and sunscreen just because you should. Try other things if you want to; but know that it is okay, and it doesn't mean your skin is unhealthy if that treatment doesn't work. :)

I've had pretty severe KP on the back of my arms for as long as I can remember until just recently when I discovered skin care, I can tell how much of a difference my arms feels now (not as rough or as many bumps). I'm not a Dermatologist, Esthetician, or specialist of any kind, BUT I just wanted to list some of the products I've been using (that are cheap and easily accessible) that has literally changed my life.
    1. First Aid Beauty - KP Bump Eraser w/ 10% AHA (usually do this in the shower)
    2. Cerave - SA Cream (Moisturizer)
    3. The Ordinary - AHA 30% + BHA 2% peeling solution (I know people normally use this for their face, but it's honestly helped me with the KP on my arms drastically. Only leave on for 10 mins as per the instructions).

@@ela7282 " its just that people with keratosis pilaris produce such abundant amounts" But for a reason that can be changed. If it's not congenital initially, and it turned up during your life, it is because our bodies can overproduce keratin as a protective reaction to various influences. It is an over-reaction to something that can be changed, be it diet, not leaning on your elbows hehe, pressures on skin, or stress. Even if it is congenital it can be dealt with and looked at from the various angles I mentioned.

I first noticed and was so embarrassed by this condition when I was in my teens. These bumps on my thighs and the back of my arms looked like goose bumps but wasn't. Fast forward several decades later I'm in my 60s and I see it disappears if I stop eating dairy, (especially cheese) for a good period of time. When I go back to eating cheese it comes back..

When I was younger I went to the dermatologist for the very first time for an exam and my mom asked the man what he thought my KP could be, i vividly remember this dermatologist stating he had no idea what it was, but still prescribed me an anti acne medication? I left feeling so discouraged and disappointed that not even a doctor knew what was wrong with my skin. I thought something was wrong with me. 😔 I still have it to this day all over my chest and may contribute to me dressing more “modestly” as everyone around me likes to put it..

My mom is a food specialist (somewhat like a dietitian) and she told me multiple times that KP is also influenced by sensitivities. Most commonly it is a sign of gluten sensitivity (which is not the same as celiac disease and cannot be tested the same way!). I can just confirm it as I also have KP and since I haven't been eating gluten I see a huge change even though I use the same products. It takes a long time to disappear by I definitely feel that I am on the right path with diet and products. So it might worth considering to test for such things as well.
