- Ray Hildebrand ("Paul") and jill Jackson Landon ("Paula") were college friends. They sang together occasionally. Jill had her own 15 minute radio program on KEAN radio in Brownwood, Texas, where they both attended Howard Payne University. As a favor to a friend, Ray wrote a song that his friend Russell could give to Russell's girlfriend Paula. Ray told Jill about the song and she invited Ray to sing the song with her on Jill's radio program. They sang the song and it was tape recorded by disc jockey Riney Jordan, who replayed it the following day. The listeners called the station, requesting more air play. Jill's parents took them to a radio station in Ft. Worth on October 6, 1962. As Jill and Ray tell Tom, it became a no. 1 hit for most of February, 1963 and their path through rock 'n' roll history became paved in vinyl.
