    With "Three Houses" nearly upon us, I wanted to tackle one of its early released tracks that seems to have flown under the radar - "Fodlan Winds" or "Dawning Wind" - which has certainly been the most difficult track to transcribe and recreate thus far!
    --------------------
    ➤ Analysis:
    Known in Japanese as "Fodlan no Gyoufuu" (of which the official English translation is not yet 100% decided), this track was composed by Takeru Kanazaki, rather than the past composers Hiroki Moshita and Rei Kondoh. As such, the change in style is quite evident.
    While generally, the aesthetic of orchestral samples has remained the same, there are new elements of electronic dance music (EDM) scattered within, including many synthesized and filtered instruments, risers and drops. The most obvious of these can be heard at 0:42.
    As to whether this new EDM aesthetic is suitable for Fire Emblem, well, that is soon to be decided (I am sitting on the fence for now!)
    To dig deeper into the track itself, there is a fascinating rhythmic syncopation going on which decimates the time signature. Although we are in 4/4, Kanazaki creates a strong metric grouping of 3 semiquavers (0:02), making the track appear to be in compound time rather than common. This disjunct meter persists nearly throughout the entire track, until the shift to the subdominant key (F minor) at 0:35.
    This syncopated meter helps to add interest to an otherwise very typical harmonic structure: I - VI - VII - I (C minor - Ab major - Bb major - C minor), which is a very common progression to the Fire Emblem series, and music in general.
    Just before the drop (0:43), Kanazaki jumps a tritone (augmented 4th) into Db major (from G), with crunchy added notes of the 7th and 11th (C and G), which are then resolved to Ab major/F minor, with the appearance of the main "Three Houses" theme in the violins (0:48).
    This "Three Houses" theme contains a surprising major-minor clash, with both a B-natural and a B-flat at the same time, in the key of G major (0:56). This dissonance is resolved downward (B-flat - A-flat - G), as it similarly does so in various other musics (see J.S.Bach "Contrapunctus 9").
    Note: I have no experience in making EDM, so forgive the very shoddy recreation here (all those FX, filters and synthesized stuff is new to me!)

    The score was created in Sibelius 7.5, and the audio was created in Cubase using libraries from EastWest, Vienna Symphonic, and 8Dio.

    And then they release an extended version of the track ... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
    EDIT (October 2020): I originally transcribed this using an incomplete OST preview before the game released (which is why it is only half of the track). I have now re-transcribed the entire 2.5 minute track (RIP me). The score link in the description uses this updated version should anyone need it.

      TandA The link is down, but hey, what are you going to do? Can you explain to me how this track is in 4/4? Because it’s very difficult to hear, at least for me. Could you also do a video on music theory and all its trappings? Because although I am a music student (I play trumpet) and adore music as a whole, I find it quite confusing.

    • @TandA-Music
      @TandA-Music  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If it's difficult to hear, don't worry - it is extremely difficult to hear in this track!
      Until 0:35, the 4/4 is obscured by very odd rhythmic stressing. Where 4/4 would normally emphasize 4 beats (e.g. 4 semiquavers, 4 quavers, 4 crotchets, etc.), here he emphasizes 3 beats (seen in the violins 0:03), which basically destroys any semblance of 4/4.
      But the reason I have written it in 4/4 is because, outside of this unusual beating, the bars do add up to 4 (if you strictly and steadily beat in 4 from the beginning, everything lines up perfectly). That, and the rest of the track from 0:35 onward is in 4/4 (much more obviously!).
      This opening section could have been written in different time signatures, but then it would be a lot more confusing to performers, and more difficult to read at first glance (imo!)

    Really nice work! Also liked the analysis portion of the description a lot. I'm really not a music theory buff (although I'm trying to get into more concepts currently) but is there something like polyrhythm going on here between the strings and the brass? I know you mention compound time, but is that all there is to it, or are these concepts related or even the same thing? To me it feels like the strings always need 2 bars to "match" up with the brass again.

    • @TandA-Music
      @TandA-Music  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are correct - there are polyrhythms going on here!
      Mainly 3 against 4, or compound time (e.g. 12/16) against common time (e.g. 4/4), or rhythmic syncopation. All 3 of those can mean the same thing, though some more specific than others.
      You'll notice I've grouped the strings into groups of 3 notes to try to bring that across visually and emphasize that syncopation, though they could also have been written in groups of 4 notes - it depends on who is performing it and what they prefer!

    • @TandA-Music
      @TandA-Music  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Heh, the sound used for the "Scratching SFX" was a combination of my mouth and harshly scraping a violin G-string with the bow. It's very VERY unlikely that's how the original composers created the sound, but it sort of worked here.
      The other synthesized sounds were created with synthesizers and heavily filtered samples. For example, the "White Noise SFX" at 0:35 was created using a few milliseconds of white noise chopped up into a sampler with a high pass filter.
      At the same place, the "Sweep Up SFX" was a long white noise sample with a thin bandpass filter that slowly ascended, creating that rising sound.
      Good fun to try and figure out how to create those sounds, and I am certain there are numerous methods to achieve the same end result!

    I don't mean to be nit-picky or rude, but you missed a big chunk of the song. There's a subtle change where the brass' initial melody gets handed to the strings, and the string's section gets handed to brass in exchange, and then it finishes on strings so that it can perfectly loop around to the beginning again. Again, not trying to be rude, in fact, this is amazing! Just something I noticed. Thank you for transcribing this!

    • @TandA-Music

      Not rude at all! - I actually created this transcription before the game was released, using the audio preview they shared beforehand (now only found here: th-cam.com/video/1gzWCVcY0rA/w-d-xo.html ). This audio preview was the incomplete track (which I did not know at the time). They released a full, longer version when the game released.
      So unfortunately there is a big chunk of the track missing, but I could only transcribe what had been released at the time! :)

    • @TandA-Music
      @TandA-Music  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ninjadude36 Yeah, no worries - with this track, they intentionally (and brutally) destroyed any steady sense of pulse / meter / time signature.
      I firmly believe it is in 4/4 (namely as, if you steadily count the beats - 1, 2, 3, 4 - it does all line up neatly into 4). But to confuse things, there are other rhythms going on ("polyrhythms") that are not common to 4/4 and blur the meter significantly.
      Here, this is mainly having 3 beats against 4 beats, or compound time (e.g. 12/16) against common time (e.g. 4/4), also known as rhythmic "syncopation" or "metric dissonance" (e.g. a disruption to the steady meter) . All of those can technically mean the same thing though (which doesn't help understanding the jargon!)
      You'll notice I've grouped the strings into groups of 3 notes to try to bring that 3 vs. 4 across visually and emphasize that syncopation, though they could also have been written in groups of 4 notes - it depends on who is performing it and what they prefer.
