A brief history lesson on Band-Maid? Well, with pleasure. :) Once upon a time there was a young lady who worked in a maid cafe who at some point had the dream of combining this image with hard/cool music. This young lady goes by the name of Miku Kobato and can be seen here with her red rose on her headband playing the rhythm guitar. But that's not quite how it started. When she dreamed about this band, she saw herself as the lead singer, having never played an instrument herself at the time.
On TH-cam she found a solo musician with her guitar called Kanami Tōno. She was the first to be recruited and happened to know a drummer who had already supported her a few times in her projects. Akane Hirose (who celebrates her 33rd birthday today on 14.12.). During her time at university, Akane played together with a bass player called MISA, who completed the band.... for now! However, the young Miku quickly realized that her voice alone was not quite strong enough for the kind of music she wanted to make with this band. Fortunately, there was a young lady with a strong voice in the agency she was under contract with who was just about to start her career. Saiki Atsumi.
With the new singer at the front, however, a problem arose for the young Miku. As the founder of this band, being the second voice alone was simply not enough for her. That was the reason why she decided to pick up a guitar for the first time and started to learn how to play it. Fortunately, she had already recruited Kanami, a brilliant guitarist, who agreed to teach her. :)
That's how this beautiful story began a little over 10 years ago. Believe me, the story of this band and the amazingly charismatic ladies you see here is at least as interesting as their music. And there's even a damn good fan-made documentary series here on TH-cam that I can only recommend for later if you really want to learn more about these ladies. :)

Back Then, the Tokyo Garden Theater was the largest venue they had ever played in. But they've just played the even larger Yokohama Arena recently and, believe it or not, the concert was EVEN BETTER than this one. 3,5 hours (and 33 songs) of pure, unbelievable wonder.
Their costumes have changed over time to match with each member’s preferences. The newest costumes are more in black now.
The bass guitar is made to look worn/used as preference of MISA.

This was their 25th song of their 2.5 hour, 26 song set - so much energy! THE best band in existence.

As others have mentioned, Ohrenje and a group of fans created some very well researched, professional level documentaries about each member of BAND-MAID. Kasper Michaels, a professional voice actor, even does the narration. They may be the best fan made documentaries I have seen on TH-cam. There are seven total (at about 30 minutes each), so it is a bit of a commitment, but they tell the story of each member and the band in great detail. If 3.5 hours is a bit overwhelming, the last three parts (Kobato Miku parts 1-3) tells the story of Miku, but gives an overview of all the members and covers the band’s creation and journey so far.
An absolute must for all Maidiacs to see man.
The documentaries that you mentioned are indeed very well done. I would recommend that every Band-Maid fan watch them at some point.
Shows that passion and respect for the subject matter goes a long ways. Caring about what you are doing always shines thru.

You should check out Puzzle from the same concert. The others will lead you thru the “pigeon” hole. They have some heavy instrumentals too like From now On. The ladies have a special relationship with their fans. I’m 54 and never experienced anything like being a “Madiac” 🤘❤️🔥 #bandmaid
Also, MISA and Saiki (bassist and lead singer) were the last 2 to join, and yes, they weren't really Thrilled originally with the full-on Maid Cafe authentic, so Miku (band founder and rhythm guitar, backing vocals, and 810 year old Pigeon) allows each member to design their own outfits.

What's cool with BAND-MAID (apart from them being excellent musicians) is that they mix hard rock, metal, punk, pop and even some jazz (and some more) in their music! And then there's BAND-MAIKO.... 😉
Tokyo Gardens hold just a hair under 9,000 and their last show of the 10th Anniversary show was in Yokohama Arena which is a tick under 18,000. Not sure if both those shows were sold out but they were packed. This show at The Gardens still had fans "muzzled" with masks from covid rules, Japan was one of the last countries to lift the ban and it happened just a few weeks after this show. They were not allowed to yell or scream, just allowed to clap. You can stop in the middle of a solo so long as you go back and start it over, so as not to violate the "Maidiacs" rules of solo interruptions, which is a grave sin. Check out "Puzzle" from the same show....it's wonderful. Bottom line is MISA and Saiki are just too cool to wear Maid outfits.

MISA (Mee-sah) - Bass Guitar, Nickname: "The Barefoot Assassin" MISA always performs barefoot as she states she likes to feel the music through her feet, and "kills" everything she plays.
Kanami Tono (Kah-nah-mee) - Lead Guitar/Genius Songwriter Nickname: "Mincho" “Kanamincho” ……Miku’s guitar Sensei.
Miku Kobato (Mee-koo) - Band-Maid Spokesperson/Rhythm Guitar/Lyricist/Founder/Backing Vocals/Lead Vocals…hardest working girl in music. Nickname: "Little Pigeon" (Miku’s surname means “Little Pigeon”) ....po! Getting caught up in Band-Maid means going down the “Pigeon Hole”…….. no rabbits here.
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-kee) -Lead Vocals Nickname: "The Princess" “Si-chan”. Saiki may be called The Princess but Miku is The Queen…..also Saiki is Kanami’s “crush”.

The crowd was subdued because this was in Tokyo just after they lifted COVID restrictions, so they weren't allowed to yell, only clap.

The outfits come from Miku's original band concept mixture of hard rock and the maid cafe image. Each Maid has now incorporated their own spin on their individual outfit. You need to see their latest outfits that they debuted during the 2023 Tour Final at Yokohama Arena.
By the way... Misa's bass is custom made by Black Smoker and it was "pre-relic'd" with the wear and chips and such. This technique is becoming quite common amongst guitar manufacturers.
MISA `s Bass is made by Black Cloud Customs / Misa has a model called the Black Smoker =its all Black .
@@dennisthemenace671 I think we are both partially correct. The company is named Black Cloud. They have several models of guitar and bass guitar all called Black Smoker with an added name designation at the end like Sigma, Delta, Beta, etc... and they are not all black even though they are called Black Smoker. If you look at the label of the bass that Misa is playing in this video (I think it is on the back of the headstock) it says Black Smoker on it. It is somewhat confusing.
True its confusing it could be a Black Smoker model , but in you original post you called the company ,Black Smoker , the company is Black Cloud Customs , that's what I was referring to , by putting out wrong info your confusing things more . Misa's bass was artificially "distressed" at the factory to give it that weathered look. It was actually pretty brand new during this show.
Yes- They all started with maid outfits in Black/white, Red/white even plaid, then over there years Saiki and Misa went more black goth-ish/maid. The outfits are change or updated about every year. Mike's red rose and Saiki's blue rose also reflect character traits. Red- more outgoing and blue more reserved. There's a bit to pick up, but you'll get there. A quick list of things they play/like. Miku (Red Rose Lyrics/ Backing Vocals/Guitar)- Pigeons/maid costumes. Saiki (Blue Rose/Lead Vocals)- Baseball/trains/fashion, Kanami (Flat bonnet/Music/Lead Guitar)- Coffee/Biscuits. Misa- (Bass) Drinking on stage and Akane- (Drums) Eating bananas on stage.
The ONLY bad thing i can say about Band-Maid is when they tour the US they don't typically have the light show/back screen but they are still incredible live saw them in Boston and waiting to see if they will be back in 2024
They normally don't in Japan either. They only have the screens/lasers etc for bigger venues that they are going to film, so it's actually quite rare. I saw them four times in Japan in October in some tiny venues (one held 350) and they just used the same backdrop they used in the US. I was very happy without all the gizmo's, just a tiny hall and the band! These small gigs got very personal between the band and the crowd.
Dude, my fingers can't keep up with my brain so I can't always get my thoughts lined up when I type much less remember all the stuff I wanted to say if I don't say it when I think it. lol I really like the Maids so I am happy to see you enjoy what they do. I live streamed the 10th anniversary concert at Yokohama arena. I had to be up at 2 a.m. to do it live but damn it was awesome. Felt like a very intimate show even on the stream. Great band, great music and awesome fan community.
This song makes me want to do the happy dance then go run a marathon. All fun and full of energy.
Band Maid.... Best served Live....the Maids have changed the "Battle Armor" several times over the years with the newest reveal at the Yokohama show Nov of 2023...Which by the way you can still buy an online ticket for and support the band with the bonus of 3.5 hours of awesomeness from the Ladies.... you really cant go wrong with any live performance...also both Misa and Akane are getting signature items released soon.. Misa has a Bass coming and Akane has signature drumsticks on the way... either would make a great Christmas Gift.. now Kanami needs her Signature PRS ...just saying....
Worth mentioning quite aside from their kick-ass performance skills, the members of Band-Maid are five of the nicest people on the planet. Genuine affection for one another and no ego. What is more, they have an equally kick-ass crew.
The newest incarnation of their Battle Armor (the name they reference their stageware by) just revealed earlier this month, shows the Maid's largest departure from the Maid aesthetic, with the exception of Miku, who remained loyal to her stylized French Maid look.
But previously it went something like this;
- Kanami (Lead Guitar) wore a stylized Classic English Maid outfit. Now her armor a dress stylized after their Iconic World Domination Bow Logo, with the retention of her headwear (most likely because she likes Saiki to tie it for her)
- Saiki (Lead Vocals) Armor was a stylized variation of a Spanish Maid's aesthetic. Whose new look is full on departure from the Maid look and has strayed into a more full on Goth look with the retention of her headware as well.
- Misa (Bassist) Has rocked a Stylized Chinese Maid aesthetic in the past, But also seems to have made a full break with the Maid aesthetic.
- Akane (Drums) has Stayed true to Classical Maid look for the most part up until her last iteration had more of a Butler's Motif (practicality for drumming being the motivation) Her new look also appears to be a full departure from the Maid aesthetic as well and is now more of a Goth leather haught couture Darling look.
Outfits are up to each member's preference. To this day, that outfit is a maid's outfit according to their definition.
I suggest a video of Choose Me at Yokohama Arena compiled by Ohrenje. And also the documentaries on the channel.
My friend, pause as much and react as often as you like. We’ve all seen and heard this song bunches of times, but we’ve never heard your feedback on it!
Personally, I need to know your opinions for future song recommendations. Band Maid’s 125+ song catalog is so deep and varied that there is something for everyone. And that also means there are likely songs that are outside your wheelhouse.
The energetic performance you see here is exactly what you get regardless of venue size. I was lucky enough to be near front row in a 700 capacity concert. They performed as if we were 70,000.
They each have a personal version of a Maid outfit. They also change them out about every year. They have done main outfits based on different countries too. Misa and Saiki are not into the traditional maid dresses. Last year Misa had more like a Chinese servant outfit. Now they look more out of a imaginary world. I'm loving the new ones. Hopefully we will have a video from their last concert at some point soon.

Just to clarify. Misa is also known as 'The Barefoot Assassin'. Two reasons. She always plays in bare feet. And her outfit is an 'Assassin Maid' tunic.
Saiki's outfit is based on sort of a Governess Maid outfit. European Goth style. But they have all changed slightly over the years.
To hear Misa own a couple of songs on the bass, react to the double video of 'Manners & Black Hole'.(live). Black hole will leave all your senses well out of alignment. Trust me.

There are 2 recent vids that high light their abilities as a LIVE band. Dice/HATE from the 2023 Lollapalooza gig. The clip is floating around on the net. Then Choose Me from their latest concert at Yokohama Arena. Look for the version put up by Orhenje. Don't use the versions on their official site. Those are earlier versions. This version from Yokohama is pure FUN. The Dice/HATE is pure rock and roll.
They have always wore maid outfits of one description or another and over the years each member has adopted a maid outfit (or battle dress) that represents their personality... Miku (rhythm guitar and vocals, red flower in hair) the founder of the band, is very outgoing, flamboyant, bouncy, confident, up front and tends to wear a uniform where the more frills the better, after all the maid image was her idea. Kanami the lead guitar has a maid outfit that represents her work ethic, a no nonsense approach. Akana (drummer) wears a maid uniform that is designed for drumming, functional, shorts, sleeves or short sleeves that allow lots of movement. Saiki (lead singer, blue flower in hair) was never keen on the original maid uniforms they performed in, when she auditioned they purposefully didnt mention the maid uniforms until she'd literally signed on the dotted line. Saiki soon ditched the apron and adopted a Maitre d style that shows off her natural aloofness and command on stage. Then there is MISA (Bass), again no a fan of the original maid uniforms and she too adopted a longer, black look. To maintain the maid image Miku refers to MISA as a Maid assassin (you dont argue with Miku), and as MISA likes to play barefoot she is known by the fans as the 'Barefoot Assassin.' The latest maid outfits , especially those worn by Kanami and Miku have taken a darker turn, some say more 'punk', even 'steampunk'.
I guess the outfits are a personal preference on the take of the maid theme. I think both Saiki (the singer) and Misa (bass) have pretty much always maintained a black look from about the second album time onwards.. Saiki has a bit if a sassy band character reputation and Misa travels under the moniker of the "assassin" for her bass slaying technique - anything beyond that is shrouded in mystery lol.
Misa the bassist wasn't thrilled with the Maid concept and slowly changed to just the black which Miku calls assassin maid and Misa was dubbed the barefoot assassin since she plays barefoot. Saiki the singer wore the maid outfit initially but then tossed out the apron and modified hers to what you see. Akane the drummer actually used to wear a little hat early on but had to pin it so tight it hurt her head so she got rid of the hat. If you see the 10th Anniversary gig Akane modeled a completely new outfit as did Kanami the lead guitar although both still slightly are maids
They all got new outfits, I love Kanami's more black one, it suits her!
The audience was a little subdued because it was still during the late period of COVID...So masks were mandatory...and so it was mainly clapping with muffled cheers....I was there....Long May They Reign! 👑

The way I look at is, Saiki and Misa are the cool chicks, always dressed in black.

Band-Maid's look has evolved, or devolved over the years (and most recently), away from the classic maid outfits. The outfits that Saiki and MISA are now wearing would be impractical for a working maid cleaning the cobwebs out of the cornices, but it would be a lot of fun to watch. 🥲
