My Man: MISA, MISA, MISA, the best bass player since Jaco Pastorius.
I think Kanami and the girls produce the most dense yet completely integrated music for any hard rock band in history. And if you isolate Saiki's singing, it's amazing how many runs and vocal techniques she uses, especially in songs like No God and Wonderland, etc.. But she can be overlooked because of the flurry of notes and sound flying around her. You gotta love these super polite, unassuming geniuses that become warriors on stage and in the studio! Thx Mike, for another great reaction to the greatest hard rock band on the planet!
What I love about this bass player is how she curls the pick into her index finger when she slaps and pops. The switching is so fast, like sleight of hand.

Quite simply: Misa, Misa, Misa! Bass Goddess!
hence the reason they are called Band-Maid.
Good ear! Yeah, she's thumping AND she's got a pick. She does both intermittently, constantly switching between thumping and picking. She hides that pick between her fingers when she thumps, and she disguises what her hand is actually doing. Just like a baseball pitcher disguises the pitch so the batter doesn't see the fingers. But, you called it. She doesn't thump hard, but she's definitely thumping. You gotta slow the replay down real slow to see her flip her pick back and forth. She may have reinvented bass playing.
Misa has mastered her pick/slap technique. Holding her pick in her index finger while slapping and freely switches between picking and slapping (er, thumping) in a millisecond. This has given her an ability so her sound is very unique and is hard to replicate. Peace.

My favorite thing about Band-Maid is that they really feature the bass in the mix and in the arrangements. So many western rock bands bury the bass in the mix and just use it for basic rhythm.

There are two things you need to know about MISA. 1: She's a awesome bassist. 2: Don't make her angry or one of them bass strings will find its way around your neck :)

Thumbs up if you think Tiny Hat-san should accompany them on-stage for every gig. I mean, Haruna of SCANDAL used to put her stuffed animal mascot on top of her Shinos amp at every gig. It should sit on top of Miku's EVH amp head. All Hail, Tiny Hat-san.

FYI -- In an interview earlier this year, Misa said that this is her favorite song in their new album. Question for you -- is it normal for bass players to switch from slapping to picking so quickly? Everyone always mentions how fast she switches from slapping to picking effortlessly -- but I would like to know if that is a common skill with bassists?
Yes, it is common, but MISA "hides the pick" better than anybody I have ever seen. It is a lot like Kanami hiding the pick and using her middle finger when she taps.
