I've been to a small fish store once while visiting family. They had large vases with plants that grew out the tops and small sponge filters for their bettas. ALL their bettas had these large vases and are sold with the entire vase setup. To put this into perspective, the vases were larger than most fish bowls, the water was super clean, and the bettas were absolutely gorgeous. I still prefer at least a 10g for a single betta, but this was 1mil times better than those dinky freaking cups bettas are usually sold in...

Hi. My betta fish bengi hasn’t been swimming around for a couple days, but he is still breathing. I know that his last breath is near. I really am having a hard time with this death. I have cried even more for him than when my dog died. He really was an amazing and beautiful fish yesterday was my 5 anniversary of getting him and I just felt like commenting this cause he was the reason I came to your channel and my gateway into getting my 50 gallon tank and studying much more about fish and other aquatic organisms anyways rest well bengi.

Great to hear you are on the right track! I adopted a Betta from a girl which out of the blue got a Betta as a gift by a friend - "just put it into a bowl with tap water and feed it with tiny pieces of cucumber" he said. Fortunatly even this girl without any experience or interest in aquaristics realized that something wasn't right here and searched for somebody who actually could take care of the fish.
For some reason people are confusing these animals with a piece of decoration - as if a fish would be nothing more than a flower in a vase which you already got knowing that it would look nice for a few days before you have to throw it out to make place for the next one, a concept which I also can't wrap my head around to be honest..

@@kai_plays_khomus If I wanted fish themed decorations I would probably get floating glass fish
They also look a lot better in vases than real fish
Real fish, from what I've seen on the internet, just look stressed in a vase and I don't want my pet to be stressed, I want it to thrive

I absolutly agree! And glass fishes are safe from suddenly swimming upside down - not exactly decorative.
I wonder how big the overall percentage of Bettas which lived a way too short life and died a way too early death really is..
I'm already thankful that over here where I and I assume you are living pet stores don't even offer bowls to begin with and the overwhelming majority of their staff would heavily discourage keeping a fish without a filter in insufficient conditions. A few weeks ago I also realized that the way too small bird cages which were widely offered 20 years ago also largely vanished from the shops - of course the layman will think it's ok to keep animals this way when a store offers this stuff.
I personally witnessed a dealer telling a guy he wouldn't ever get a fish at this place again after he replied "when they die quick we can simply get new ones" when his approach of care got questioned. I was positivly surprised when I found that a well known chain store doesn't sell social animals like budgies, guinea pigsand such into single care any longer. Based on what I've seen on this channel I assume that the standards are much more lenient in US.

@@kai_plays_khomus yes, Okay, we had the tank all set up the filter .. so the filters stupid company diddnt include one part of it by “ accident “ the instructions diddnt mention it anywhere. We got a fish and the filter sucked him up.. I constantly feel so guilty because yknow we killed him.. he deserved so much better. We recycled the tank and bought a sponge filter..at school I told my friends and a guy heard me say it and he said “ it’s just a fish just get a new one it’s not that hard” If he said this about a dog it would be way different .. according to some people fish are toys.

I live in Canada too and everything is so expensive! Book prices are higher too. I was looking for some fish magazines or books or something, and the ones I found were all 20 dollars! They were paperback hreiwpghrew. Anyways, I got a haircut yesterday, and the hairdresser was talking about how she just couldn't keep her fish alive. I asked her what she was keeping the fish in and she said, "Oh, just kept the beta fish in a bowl." That explains why her fish kept dying. And yes, I know to spell Betta like Betta, but I spelled it with one T to be pronounced like "bayda".

I just had my first shift at an aquarium and my whole 8 hours was the handle and maintain all the bettas (we got a bunch of shipment in that day). Very little of them are actually kept in those smaller betta tanks, most of them actually get spread around our giant planted tanks or community tanks (obviously one per tank). It keeps them very healthy and there is rarely a sad looking one (although it's my first shift, I have actually been going there for a while as a customer and never saw an ill betta).

I live in Texas and to beat the heat, I shower in cold water, put shorts and a light shirt or tank on, light shoes or just walk in flip flops all day around the house. Always have water or a cool drink in the fridge and a few ice packs in the freezer, nothing like a cold ice pack on your face to cool off. You could also do the cold bandana around your neck when going outside. If your glasses or sunglasses are to hot, put them near a fan, you could put them in the freezer but DO NOT forget about them.
Ice tea is also your friend, I like unsweetened tea.
Popsicles also help with the heat.
And always have a hat on and use sunscreen, sunburn is not fun!

Growing up in south Florida, in the summer I would go to day camps and be outside all day. Frozen water bottles over night to drink, and FREEZING MY HAT. Soaking the hat the night before and freezing it overnight, I would keep it in my lunchbox to use when the temps were the highest and the sun's UV was the most intense. Also, light colored, loose fitting clothing, flip flops with perpetually wet feet, sitting in the shade with a breeze. Fruit, lots of fruit, it keeps you hydrated and the sugars keep you from craving heavier stuff. And the best part: swamp slogging. Being in the water is the best part, with or without the alligators.

I'm going out of town for a week and I'm seriously afraid of trying to teach my mom how to feed my fish. Three years ago, she didn't feed them at all, 6 months ago she overfed them and left all the lights on (algae killed half of my plants) lmao
I'm headed to Alaska to escape the Texas heat. My car has no AC and it's been in the 100's for like three weeks now. Tips for the heat? I'd suggest leaving like I am lmfao

Saw someone put ice in bag or you probably also could use anything frozen except meats and duct tape it to the fan. But personally I get 5 of my fans and my portable air conditioner along with another one in window in different room…( I live in a apartment complex) I love the cold. 🥶

The big Drag/Rave/Tai Chi hand fans are excellent for moving a lot of air at you (but not the little paper ones). Although I wish there was advice on helping to keep the temp down in my fish tank. Or at least info on whats too hot (for a betta).

As someone who travels too much, I can’t have fishes so I cannot get “my hands wet ” so for this summer, everyday I’m getting my shirt wet 😼 but for real, T-shirt soaked in cold water and I’m good to go.
Ps. After watching your videos, whenever I see a fish tank im analysing and judging it like some kind of specialist hahahah

One day, TH-cam recommended me a video named “You Suck At Fish Tank”. Now I always doing research before keeping any fish and plants. You turn me from a bastard into a good fish owner. Love you Chirs!

Chris I have a 21 liter fish tank and it currently holds a betta fish, It has a big piece of driftwood that has a branch creeping out and I have tied some plants on that I was wondering what would be good plants for inside the water and some floating plants and if I could any other fishes in there like a few Chili Rasboras.

Oh wait, I’m just a betta in a bowl at the doctors office watching TH-cam over a patient’s shoulder.
